Download or read book Rebel of the Asylum written by N O Slak and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2007-10 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I started working at the age of fourteen. It's not that I planned it that way, because working was the furthest thing from my mind. Like any child, I simply wanted to play with my friends and watch TV. However, my father insisted that I get a job so I would not become a family embarrassment. I delivered newspapers, delivered hay to the rich and snobbish and even worked at a gas station. I had approximately eight different jobs by the time I was twenty. However, I was always determined. I always worked extremely hard, because I knew no other way. I persevered while living in my car with my favorite dog while working at a hardware store for a year after I quit college. At the age of twenty, I finally found my passion while working for Disney, yet this is the first company where I learned the definition of work ethics and in some cases, the lack thereof by other employees. My career blossomed at Disney through the help of mentors, who were also great leaders. I learned to separate myself from the pack in every endeavor I chose. Work finds exemplary employees. Mediocre employees find work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clarence Jordan seemed to be born with an ability to see things just a little bit differently than other people did--and sometimes that got him into trouble. Like his views on racial equality: they just weren't popular with many other White people in the Deep South of his day. Like his views on war and how to deal with violence and hatred. For Clarence, the Gospel was very clear about these issues. Moreover, he believed that Jesus's teachings were not just abstract principles but were meant to be applied directly to everyday life. That got him into trouble too, especially among certain church-going people. Along the way, Clarence became a progressive farmer, a sought-after preacher, a Greek scholar, an author, a precursor of the Civil Rights movement, and a family man. An irrepressible sense of humor enlivened all these aspects of his life. Today, Clarence Jordan is best known as the author of the Cotton Patch Gospels and as the inspiration for Habitat for Humanity. The story of the making of this extraordinary man is not so widely known. Cotton Patch Rebel tells that story.

Book Synopsis The Cultural Politics of Chick Lit by : Heike Missler
Download or read book The Cultural Politics of Chick Lit written by Heike Missler and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-11-03 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chick lit is the marketing label attributed to a surge of books published in the wake of Helen Fielding's Bridget Jones's Diary (1996) and Candace Bushnell's Sex and the City (1997). Branded by their pink or pastel-coloured book covers, chick-lit novels have been a highly successful and ubiquitous product of women's popular culture since the late 1990s. This study traces the evolution of chick lit not only as a genre of popular fiction, but as a cultural phenomenon. It complicates the genealogy of the texts by situating them firmly in the context of age-old debates about female literary creation, and by highlighting the dynamics of the popular-fiction market. Offering a convincing dissection of the formula which lies at the heart of chick lit, as well as in-depth analyses of a number of chick-lit titles ranging from classic to more recent and edgier texts, this book yields new insights into a relatively young field of academic study. Its close readings provide astute assessments of chick lit's notoriously skewed representational politics, especially with regard to sexuality and ethnicity, which feed into current discussions about postfeminism. Moreover, the study makes a unique contribution to the scholarly debate of chick lit by including an analysis of the (online) fan communities the genre has fostered. The Cultural Politics of Chick Lit weaves a sound methodological network, drawing on reader-response criticism; feminist, gender, and queer theory; affect studies; and whiteness studies. This book is an accessible and engaging study for anyone interested in postfeminism and popular culture.
