Book excerpt: Disasters by Design provides an alternative and sustainable way to view, study, and manage hazards in the United States that would result in disaster-resilient communities, higher environmental quality, inter- and intragenerational equity, economic sustainability, and improved quality of life. This volume provides an overview of what is known about natural hazards, disasters, recovery, and mitigation, how research findings have been translated into policies and programs; and a sustainable hazard mitigation research agenda. Also provided is an examination of past disaster losses and hazards management over the past 20 years, including factorsâ€"demographic, climate, socialâ€"that influence loss. This volume summarizes and sets the stage for the more detailed books in the series.

Book excerpt: Lynn argues that the condemnation of eugenics in the second half of the 20th century went too far and offers a reassessment. The eugenic objectives of eliminating genetic diseases, increasing intelligence, and reducing personality disorders he argues, remain desirable and are achievable by human biotechnology. In this four-part analysis, Lynn begins with an account of the foundation of eugenics by Francis Galton and the rise and fall of eugenics in the twentieth century. He then sets out historical formulations on this issue and discusses in detail desirability of the new eugenics of human biotechnology. After examining the classic approach of attempting to implement eugenics by altering reproduction, Lynn concludes that the policies of classical eugenics are not politically feasible in democratic societies. The new eugenics of human biotechnology--prenatal diagnosis of embryos with genetic diseases, embryo selection, and cloning--may be more likely than classic eugenics to evolve spontaneously in western democracies. Lynn looks at the ethical issues of human biotechnologies and how they may be used by authoritarian states to promote state power. He predicts how eugenic policies and dysgenic processes are likely to affect geopolitics and the balance of power in the 21st century. Lynn offers a provocative analysis that will be of particular interest to psychologists, sociologists, demographers, and biologists concerned with issues of population change and intelligence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As clinicians begin to realize the important role of dose-finding in the drug development process, there is an increasing openness to "novel" methods proposed in the past two decades. In particular, the Continual Reassessment Method (CRM) and its variations have drawn much attention in the medical community, though it has yet to become a commonplace tool. To overcome the status quo in phase I clinical trials, statisticians must be able to design trials using the CRM in a timely and reproducible manner. A self-contained theoretical framework of the CRM for researchers and graduate students who set out to learn and do research in the CRM and dose-finding methods in general, Dose Finding by the Continual Reassessment Method features: Real clinical trial examples that illustrate the methods and techniques throughout the book Detailed calibration techniques that enable biostatisticians to design a CRM in timely manner Limitations of the CRM are outlined to aid in correct use of method This book supplies practical, efficient dose-finding methods based on cutting edge statistical research. More than just a cookbook, it provides full, unified coverage of the CRM in addition to step-by-step guidelines to automation and parameterization of the methods used on a regular basis. A detailed exposition of the calibration of the CRM for applied statisticians working with dose-finding in phase I trials, the book focuses on the R package ‘dfcrm’ for the CRM and its major variants. The author recognizes clinicians’ skepticism of model-based designs, and addresses their concerns that the time, professional, and computational resources necessary for accurate model-based designs can be major bottlenecks to the widespread use of appropriate dose-finding methods in phase I practice. The theoretically- and empirically-based methods in Dose Finding by the Continual Reassessment Method will lessen the statistician’s burden and encourage the continuing development and implementation of model-based dose-finding methods.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Reassessment' is an inspiring, spiritual novel full of courage, hope, freedom, forgiveness, and love. Imagine if you were suddenly trapped inside a cave by yourself. Then, imagine how shocked and surprised you'd feel coming face to face with one of your spirit guides who is going to help you to not only be set free from your rocky confines, but free from the things in your life that have traumatised you and others for years too. Kate Roberts was a disliked woman by many who crossed her path. She was riddled with all sorts of phobias, hang-ups and was an emotional wreck most days, but in her mind, from her viewpoint, she was fine. Just fine. Deeply in denial and always distracting herself in life to avoid confronting her problems was something that she was so accustomed to, she had absolutely no idea just how damaged she really was. Always keeping strangers at arms’ length, it was virtually impossible for her to ever allow anyone to get past her brick wall and close to her. It was a wonder that she had any friends at all but she did; three to be precise. They were her closer than close friends, more like family. Her three friends loved her unconditionally. They all had a bond so close and tight that nothing in life, and nobody either, could ever come between their lifelong friendship. But things were about to drastically change for Kate. If she wouldn’t listen to them and alter her negative thinking about some past situations in her life in order for her to finally move on, there was someone else who she was about to meet who she’d have to listen to for she was about to be confronted not just by all of her problems, but by herself too, at last. What she never expected was to also be faced with a very special person who had been watching her all of her life since childhood, someone who had a love for her so deep, that not even time, space or even death could ever erase. This the heart-breaking but also very positive, very moving, powerful and inspirational story of a woman who learns the hard way that in order to change her life for the better, she first had to experience many things in her forty-two years of life in order to understand who she is and what her purpose here on Earth is. What she never expected was to come face to face with someone who knows her better than herself and who loves her unconditionally despite her faults and imperfections. How does Kate react to this wonderful encounter? And how does she view the person who has been trying to help her to transform her life into a much more caring and selfless one? We each have free will and can do whatever we choose to in life, but what does Kate decide to do with hers? When suddenly confronted with the biggest event that not will not only make her face up to herself and how badly she’d been treating herself and others, it would also make her realise that ultimately, people have two choices in life: to choose to be happy and to love not only themselves but others too, or, to choose to go the other way; wallowing in pessimism, negativity and mistreatment of others - to their own detriment. This is the deeply moving and inspirational story of how one woman could transform her entire life in the blink of an eye if she wanted to: just by seeing that the most important thing in life is love. Giving love and living a life bound by a loving heart. Here is Kate’s story.

Book excerpt: Arthur Dove: A Reassessment offers a fresh look at the art, life and literature of seminal American modernist painter Arthur Dove (1880-1946). It also introduces Dove's long-forgotten biographer Suzanne Mullett Smith, who worked with Alfred Stieglitz and the artist from 1943 to 1944 assembling a chronicle of Dove's art and life as well as a catalogue raisonné. By examining previously unpublished material, this volume explores the differences between Dove's public and private personas, especially the development of his art while living in Westport, Connecticut, from 1910 to 1920; his successful career as a chicken farmer; his complex relationship with his family; and the impact of his Christian background on some of his best-known works. This lavishly designed volume offers a fresh reexamination of Dove that is sure to become essential reading for scholars and fans alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using the framework of genocide, this volume analyzes the patterns of persecution of the Roma in Nazi-dominated Europe. Detailed case studies of France, Austria, Romania, Croatia, Ukraine, and Russia generate a critical mass of evidence that indicates criminal intent on the part of the Nazi regime to destroy the Roma as a distinct group. Other chapters examine the failure of the West German State to deliver justice, the Romani collective memory of the genocide, and the current political and historical debates. As this revealing volume shows, however inconsistent or geographically limited, over time, the mass murder acquired a systematic character and came to include ever larger segments of the Romani population regardless of the social status of individual members of the community.

This book was released on 2011-07-26 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Work and Pensions Committee supports the Government's objectives for the incapacity benefit (IB) reassessment, which are to help people with disabilities and long-term health conditions to move back into employment, while continuing to provide adequate support for people who have limited capability for work or are unable to work. However, the report finds that the Government's positive messages about the IB reassessment are not getting through to the public. The report argues that that the Government should be more proactive in explaining its aims for the process and in emphasising the range of support which will be available. Current incapacity benefit claimants are being reassessed to decide whether they are able to work. The inquiry looked in detail at the Work Capability Assessment (WCA), the test which is used to assess whether an incapacity benefit claimant is capable of work, or work-related activity. WCAs are carried out by Atos Healthcare as part of a contract with the Department for Work and Pensions. It is widely accepted that the WCA was flawed, in the form in which it was introduced in 2008 for new ESA claimants, leading to a high proportion of inaccurate assessments and poor decisions by Jobcentre Plus. Many of these decisions were overturned at appeal. The report acknowledges that many welcome improvements have been made to the reassessment process as a result of the review by Professor Malcolm Harrington and the trial of the process carried out in Aberdeen and Burnley, before it was introduced nationally.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Principle of Sufficient Reason (PSR) says that all contingent facts must have explanation. In this 2006 volume, which was the first on the topic in the English language in nearly half a century, Alexander Pruss examines the substantive philosophical issues raised by the Principle Reason. Discussing various forms of the PSR and selected historical episodes, from Parmenides, Leibnez, and Hume, Pruss defends the claim that every true contingent proposition must have an explanation against major objections, including Hume's imaginability argument and Peter van Inwagen's argument that the PSR entails modal fatalism. Pruss also provides a number of positive arguments for the PSR, based on considerations as different as the metaphysics of existence, counterfactuals and modality, negative explanations, and the everyday applicability of the PSR. Moreover, Pruss shows how the PSR would advance the discussion in a number of disparate fields, including meta-ethics and the philosophy of mathematics.
