Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reason, Faith and Authority in Christianity: Being the Paddock Lectures for 1901 02 These lectures on the relations between Reason, Faith, and Authority, were delivered before the students and professors in the chapel of the General Theological Seminary in New York in December, 1901, and February, 1902. They are published under the conditions prescribed in the Paddock Foundation. Portions omitted for want of time when they were delivered, appear in the printed Lectures. A few notes are appended developing some important principles compressed into sentences in the text. I have also introduced in the Lectures, and especially in the notes, extracts from masters of style and luminous thinking, to call the attention of the younger generation of the clergy to books which may be helpful, educative and inspiring. The constant pressure of the pulpit for literary production may lead to the formation of the habit of slipshod methods of expression as well as crudities of thought. For intelligent laymen, as well as for the clergy, time is too short for communion through books with any but the best minds. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Freedom and Authority in Religion The argument which we ofier in these pages recognizes fully the value of the distinctive scientific criterion of explanation as employed hitherto, but it denies with emphasis its adequacy for the re ligious life. Nor does the argument depend for its cogency upon the outcome of pending discussions as to the existence in the biological world of a prin ciple of creative evolution as urged by Professor Bergson, or upon something else over and above mechanism and chemical agencies which may lead to the discovery of a second criterion of scientific explanation. The bases of religious knowledge lie in personality and personal relationships. This we undertake to show. Along with this we have sought to indicate incidentally to what extent the current effort to make religion and theology scientific has been misleading. Until the conception of science obtains a wider meaning such an effort either leads too far or it does not lead far enough; too far in that, if the scientific criterion of physical continuity is consistently and thoroughly applied everywhere, God and religion vanish; or not far enough, in that, if deductions from the plane of nature to a sphere above nature be the sum total of the outcome. They represent the results Of investigations undertaken to satisfy my own mind on the many questions raised at the present day as to the truth and the form of the Christian Religion. They are fragments of larger works which I had projected and had hoped to carry out, if the continuous strain Of the practical occupations in which I have been involved had permitted. They have all been useful to myself, and I hope may be of some use to others. For this reason I have thought it better not to allow the developement Of the argument or investigation to be obscured through fear of an occasional overlapping Of one essay with another. Such writers appear to the true student of history, science, truth, and morals entirely indifferent to the consequences resulting therefrom to faith and morals. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The great Buddhist scholars Santaraksita (725 - 88 CE.) and his disciple Kamalasila were among the most influential thinkers in classical India. They debated ideas not only within the Buddhist tradition but also with exegetes of other Indian religions, and they both traveled to Tibet during Buddhism's infancy there. Their views, however, have been notoriously hard to classify. The present volume examines Santaraksita's Tattvasamgraha and Kamalasila's extensive commentary on it, works that cover all conceivable problems in Buddhist thought and portray Buddhism as a supremely rational faith. One hotly debated topic of their time was omniscience - whether it is possible and whether a rational person may justifiably claim it as a quality of the Buddha. Santaraksita and Kamalasila affirm both claims, but in their argumentation they employ divergent rhetorical strategies in different passages, advancing what appear to be contradictory positions. McClintock's investigation of the complex strategies these authors use in defense of omniscience sheds light on the rhetorical nature of their enterprise, one that shadows their own personal views as they advance the arguments they deem most effective to convince the audiences at hand.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Future Life: According to the Authority of Divine Revelation the Dictates of Sound Reason the General Consent of Mankind Our only merit, if this much may be allowed, is that of hav ing gleaned from the vast fields of Catholic philosophy and theology, and from the pages of history what seemed to us the best arguments, and the most convincing testimonies available for our purpose. In other words, our effort has been to place within the reach of our readers the hidden treasures of the past with a view to strengthen their faith, and equip them with such weapons of defense as will render them victorious against the sophisms and deceits of the unbelievers of our times. To all hu man aberrations on future life we Oppose the knowledge given us by our holy religion. Here everything concurs to assure us of the truth: the Teacher, who is Divine, the Son of the living God: the doctrine, a heavenly one, His Gospel, the wisest and purest that shall ever be preached; the school, the most perfect that is possible for men to frequent, Christianity, which He founded to transform the inhabitants of earth into citizens of heaven. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Authority or a Plain Reason for Joining the Church of Rome In view of these serious accusations (to which, indeed, we are accustomed, for it is a note of the Church thus to be abused, but which we none the less deplore, as a grievous thing on the part of those who make them) I prepose to point out that Canon Carter has committed himself to statements which are altogether without found ation. He imagines that he stands on the sure foundation of Catholic consent 5 but, in the exercise of his own judg ment as to what comes under that head, he has fallen into most serious nus-statements. In endeavouring to account for the separation between East and West, he relies on two Canons which were not received in the West, and considers them, nevertheless, to have the value of an Ecumenical decision. They are to him the voice of the Church. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Destiny of Man Proved From Reason: And the Infallibility of the Catholic Church Proved From Reason and History Give a br1ef refutation of such before I could enter on the subject. The immortality of the soul, the free-will of man and the eternally happy end for which God created him form the basis on which I had to build my arguments. After re futing the above mentioned errors, I showed that the means for arriving at the truths of supernatural revelation can neither be the Bible nor human reason. This naturally leads us to inquire whether God established a supreme and visible authority to govern and teach His church, and whether that supreme authority, ln 1ts official capacity, or ex cathedra, is infallible in teaching faith and morals. But before We come to consider this, it must be shown that Christ was on earth and founded a church, and that He is God as well as man; then we must have a clear conception of the essential ele ments of society in general. It is impossible to have a distinct idea of the church founded by Christ unless we under stand of what elements it is composed. We must, then. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the availability and use of media platforms continue to expand, the cultural visibility of religion is on the rise, leading to questions about religious authority: Where does it come from? How is it established? What might be changing it? The contributors to The Media and Religious Authority examine the ways in which new centers of power and influence are emerging as religions seek to “brand” themselves in the media age. Putting their in-depth, incisive studies of particular instances of media production and reception in Asia, Africa, Latin America, and North America into conversation with one another, the volume explores how evolving mediations of religion in various places affect the prospects, aspirations, and durability of religious authority across the globe. An insightful combination of theoretical groundwork and individual case studies, The Media and Religious Authority invites us to rethink the relationships among the media, religion, and culture. The contributors are Karina Kosicki Bellotti, Alexandra Boutros, Pauline Hope Cheong, Peter Horsfield, Christine Hoff Kraemer, Joonseong Lee, Alf Linderman, Bahíyyah Maroon, Montré Aza Missouri, and Emily Zeamer, with an afterword by Lynn Schofield Clark.
