Download or read book Au Naturel written by Lara Anderson and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2010-03-08 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Literary naturalism, within the Hispanic context, has traditionally been read as a graphic realist school or movement linked predominantly to late nineteenth century literary production. The essays in Au Naturel: (Re)Reading Hispanic Naturalism—written by scholars from different generations, nationalities and ideological backgrounds—propose a major revisionist contribution to the study of Hispanic naturalism. Based on a theoretical proposal that re-semanticizes naturalismo as a diachronic counter-metanarrative phenomenon that transcends the chronological and geographic limitations imposed by traditional criticism on naturalism, the collection provides new readings of traditional naturalist fare as well as re-readings of works that have not been read, within the bounds of conventional criticism, as naturalist. Re-read within the proposed theoretical framework, its essays demonstrate the countless ways in which Hispanic naturalist texts–literary and more recently, filmic—continue to frankly engage the societal problematics that has impeded true social, political, economic and cultural progress from taking place in the Hispanic world from the turbulent fin-de-siècle period of the nineteenth century through the present day, globalized context. Au Naturel: (Re)Reading Hispanic Naturalism is thus also an open invitation to the scholarly community to re-consider other socio-critical works within the Hispanic naturalist context that observe and reflection upon social issues that continue to plague Hispanic society today.

Book excerpt: A study of literary Naturalism in Spain (1860-1890). This book explores the polemic surrounding the introduction of literary Naturalism in Spain (1860-1890), during which traditional Spanish institutions and traditional forms of authority were displaced by a variety of forces that competed for authoritative status. Of the philosophical, theological, aesthetic, political and social factors which thus came together in a unique confluence of discourses and voices, the author stresses particularly the politicalfactors and the intrusion of the female speaker in late nineteenth-century society. MARY LEE BRETZ is a Professor of Spanish at Rutgers State University, New Jersey.

In this context, authors studied in this book include Juan Valera, Leopoldo Alas Clarín, Emilia Pardo Bazán, Caterina Albert, Benito Pérez Galdós, Miguel de Unamuno, and Juan Goytisolo, among others.

Book Synopsis Realism as Resistance by : Denise DuPont
Download or read book Realism as Resistance written by Denise DuPont and published by Bucknell University Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the fluid boundaries between realism and romanticism, while considering this oscillation between discourses as the legacy of the Quijote to the nineteenth-century Spanish novel. Furthermore, there are studies of characters who act as authors in Benito Perez Galdos's first series of Episodios Nacionales, Pio Baroja's La lucha por la vida, and Leopoldo Alas (Clarin)'s La Regenta. For many realists, romanticism has negative associations: quixotism, exaggeration, impracticality, and femininity or effeminacy.
Book Synopsis The Spanish Element in Our Nationality” by : M. Elizabeth Boone
Download or read book The Spanish Element in Our Nationality” written by M. Elizabeth Boone and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2020-01-10 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The Spanish Element in Our Nationality” delves beneath the traditional “English-only” narrative of U.S. history, using Spain’s participation in a series of international exhibitions to illuminate more fully the close and contested relationship between these two countries. Written histories invariably record the Spanish financing of Columbus’s historic voyage of 1492, but few consider Spain’s continuing influence on the development of U.S. national identity. In this book, M. Elizabeth Boone investigates the reasons for this problematic memory gap by chronicling a series of Spanish displays at international fairs. Studying the exhibition of paintings, the construction of ephemeral architectural space, and other manifestations of visual culture, Boone examines how Spain sought to position itself as a contributor to U.S. national identity, and how the United States—in comparison to other nations in North and South America—subverted and ignored Spain’s messages, making it possible to marginalize and ultimately obscure Spain’s relevance to the history of the United States. Bringing attention to the rich and understudied history of Spanish artistic production in the United States, “The Spanish Element in Our Nationality” recovers the “Spanishness” of U.S. national identity and explores the means by which Americans from Santiago to San Diego used exhibitions of Spanish art and history to mold their own modern self-image.
Book Synopsis Subversive Seduction by : Travis Landry
Download or read book Subversive Seduction written by Travis Landry and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2013-01-10 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Male-male rivalry and female passive choice, the two principal tenets of Darwinian sexual selection, raise important ethical questions in The Descent of Man--and in the decades since--about the subjugation of women. If female choice is a key component of evolutionary success, what impact does the constraint of women's choices have on society? The elaborate courtship plots of 19th century Spanish novels, with their fixation on suitors and selectors, rivalry, and seduction, were attempts to grapple with the question of female agency in a patriarchal society. By reading Darwin through the lens of the Spanish realist novel and vice versa, Travis Landry brings new insights to our understanding of both: while Darwin's theories have often been seen as biologically deterministic, Landry asserts that Darwin's theory of sexual selection was characterized by an open ended dynamic whose oxymoronic emphasis on "passive" female choice carries the potential for revolutionary change in the status of women.

Book Synopsis Genealogical Fictions by : Jobst Welge
Download or read book Genealogical Fictions written by Jobst Welge and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2015 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Moving through time, he uncovers often-unsuspected novelistic continuities and international transformations and echoes, from Maria Edgeworth's Castle Rackrent, published in 1800, to G. Tomasi di Lampedusa's 1958 book Il Gattopardo.By revealing the "family resemblance" of novels from Great Britain, Italy, Spain, Portugal, and Brazil, this volume shows how genealogical narratives take on special significance in contexts of cultural periphery. Welge links private and public histories, while simultaneously integrating detailed accounts of various literary fields across the globe. In combining theories of the novel, recent discussions of cultural geography, and new approaches to genealogical narratives, Genealogical Fictions addresses a significant part of European and Latin American literary history in which texts from different national cultures illuminate each other in unsuspected ways and reveal the repetition, as well as the variation, among them.

Book excerpt: Novelist-critic Leopoldo Alas's reputation suffered neglect and silent reproval during much of the twentieth century, especially under the Franco regime, but his reputation has now achieved classic status in Spain. Clearly related to this is the great increase in the number of translations - Julian Barnes called La Regenta 'the foreign classic tardily discovered'. This bibliography picks up where the first one left off in 1984. It is divided into primary material and secondary material. Primary material includes: Anthologies and Selections; Criticism; Novels; Short Story Collections; Plays; Correspondence; Prologues; Reprints; Translations; and Miscellaneous, with two new categories: autograph manuscripts and iconography.
