Book excerpt: This monograph is an attempt to compile the present state of knowledge on ocean wave analysis and prediction. The emphasis of the monograph is on the development of ocean wave analysis and predic tion procedures and their utility for real-time operations and appli cations. Most of the material in the monograph is derived from journal articles, research reports and recent conference proceedings; some of the basic material is extracted from standard text books on physical oceanography and wind waves. Ocean wave analysis and prediction is becoming an important activity in the meteorological and oceanographic services of many countries. The present status of ocean wave prediction may be compar able to the status of numerical weather prediction of the mid-sixties and early seventies when a number of weather prediction models were developed for research purposes, many of which were later put into operational use by meteorological services of several countries. The increased emphasis on sea-state analysis and prediction has created a need for a ready reference material on various ocean wave analysis and modelling techniques and their utility. The present monograph is aimed at fulfilling this need. The monograph should prove useful to the ocean wave modelling community as well as to marine forecasters, coastal engineers and offshore technologists. The monograph could also be used for a senior undergraduate (or a first year graduate) level course in ocean wave modelling and marine meteorology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Information Engineering for Port and Marine Environments provides the technology of tidal level prediction, the technology of oil spill early-warning, and the research for the theory of storm sedimentation, the construction for monitor ability, the early-warning service for numerical simulation and operational, which involves many aspects such as theoretical research, system establishment, and application of information technology, et al. Because of the certain prospective and advancement of multiple work, it will play a positive role in promoting the related technology of the field. There are several of important offshore ports in China, such as Tianjin port, Yangshan Port, Ningbo-Zhoushan port, Huanghua port et al., most of them are located in the coast of muddy and muddy silty, and the depth of water is shallow, the sediment deposition is serious, the large ship is operated by tide. In order to sufficiently keep the rapid and stable economic growth in bay, estuary and delta, guarantee the security of port, channel, maritime, oceanic engineering and resource development of oil and gas, and better escort for the social economy activities, it is essential to provide the information service of sediment and ocean hydrometeorology with width coverage, and forecasting and warning information. It is all the latest research results in the book, which involves many fields such as physical oceanography, meteorology, biology, chemistry, geology, environment, transportation and law and so on. The development of information assurance and prediction system for port shipping and ocean environment is a huge and arduous project. It is too hasty to finish the book, due to the limited knowledge of the author, the careless is unavoidable, cordially invites the readers to point out. Features: An entire system to forecast the port shipping and ocean environment information is proposed, including what is the port shipping and ocean environment information. The concept of port shipping and ocean environment data integration is presented, and the essential modules are built for the ocean dynamics model. The high performance port shipping and ocean environment data processing system is constructed, and the model dataset and geographic information is obtained to build the basic database. The application of information assurance technology for port shipping and ocean environment is conducted at Tianjin port and Yangshan Port. This book is meant for senior undergraduates and postgraduate students in the fields of geoinformatics, Port engineering and Marine engineering. Engineers and technicians in the related fields can also use it for reference.

Book excerpt: This book commemorates the 70th birthday of Eugene Morozov, the noted Russian observational oceanographer. It contains many contributions reflecting his fields of interest, including but not limited to tidal internal waves, ocean circulation, deep ocean currents, and Arctic oceanography. Special attention is paid to studies on internal waves and especially those on tidal internal waves in the Global Ocean. These papers describe the most important open problems concerning experimental studies of internal waves and their theoretical, numerical, and laboratory modeling. Further contributions investigate the physics of surface waves and their interaction with internal waves. Here, the focus is on describing interaction processes between internal waves and deep currents in the ocean, especially currents of Antarctic Bottom Water in abyssal fractures. They also touch on the problem of oceanic circulation and related processes in fjords, including those occurring under sea ice. Given its breadth of coverage, the book will appeal to anyone interested in a survey of ocean dynamics, ranging from historic perspectives to modern research topics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents selected papers from the 2nd Workshop on “Durability of Composites in a Marine Environment”, which was held in Brest, France in August 2016. Providing an overview of the state of the art in predicting the long-term durability of composite marine structures, it addresses modelling water diffusion; damage induced by water accelerated testing, including durability in design; in-service experiences; ocean energy; and offshore applications. Ensuring long-term durability is not only necessary for safety reasons, but also determines the economic viability of future marine structures, and as such, the book is essential reading for all those involved with composites in the marine industry, from initial design and calculation through to manufacture and service exploitation. It also provides information unavailable elsewhere on the mechanisms involved in degradation and how to take account of them.
