Vehicle crash reconstruction simulations establish new scientific basis for the judiciary system. Computer models are used to reconstruct the vehicle performance, since the dynamic performance of a vehicle collision cannot be repeated in real time. Vehicle dynamics is the engineering study of a vehicle based on mechanics and physics. This thesis uses modern techniques in combination with the information of Event Data Recorders (EDR) to help the judiciary system identify the safety parameters and condition of vehicles. The research analysis mainly focuses on the performance of police vehicles. The EDR is a device installed in the vehicle to record how the driver responds to a crash event. Since 2004 the event data recorders are mandatory in every vehicle. Also, the EDR is able to analyze the change in velocity of the vehicle at the time of the impact. The analysis of the change in velocity allows a base structure for computer simulation. A 3-D computer solid model of a 2004 Ford Crown Victoria is developed using Solidwoks. Also, dynamic computer simulations are developed using Adams View. The solid models consist of a tire assembly, a suspension assembly and a vehicle structure. These are assembled to form a complete model of the vehicle. The main objective is to analyze the vehicle's performance during tactile driving maneuverers. The second objective is to provide new alternative methods to demonstrate a crash reconstruction to the judicial system. This method will provide a simpler, faster, and more accurate analysis of a vehicle dynamics. Additionally, the outcome of these simulations will provide a theoretical basis for future vehicle design.

Book excerpt: Enhancing road safety by developing active safety system is the general purpose of this thesis. A challenging task in the development of active safety system is to get accurate information about immeasurable vehicle dynamics states. More specifically, we need to estimate the vertical load, the lateral frictional force and longitudinal frictional force at each wheel, and also the sideslip angle at center of gravity. These states are the key parameters that could optimize the control of vehicle's stability. The estimation of vertical load at each tire enables the evaluation of the risk of rollover. Estimation of tire lateral forces could help the control system reduce the lateral slip and prevent the situation like spinning and drift out. Tire longitudinal forces can also greatly influence the performance of vehicle. The sideslip angle is one of the most important parameter to control the lateral dynamics of vehicle. However, in the current market, very few safety systems are based on tire forces, due to the lack of cost-effective method to get these information. For all the above reasons, we would like to develop a perception system to monitor these vehicle dynamics states by using only low-cost sensor. In order to achieve this objective, we propose to develop novel observers to estimate unmeasured states. However, construction of an observer which could provide satisfactory performance at all condition is never simple. It requires : 1, accurate and efficient models; 2, a robust estimation algorithm; 3, considering the parameter variation and sensor errors. As motivated by these requirements, this dissertation is organized to present our contribution in three aspects : vehicle dynamics modelization, observer design and adaptive estimation. In the aspect of modeling, we propose several new models to describe vehicle dynamics. The existent models are obtained by simplifying the vehicle motion as a planar motion. In the proposed models, we described the vehicle motion as a 3D motion and considered the effects of road inclination. Then for the vertical dynamics, we propose to incorporate the suspension deflection to calculate the transfer of vertical load. For the lateral dynamics, we propose the model of transfer of lateral forces to describe the interaction between left wheel and right wheel. With this new model, the lateral force at each tire can be calculated without sideslip angle. Similarly, for longitudinal dynamics, we also propose the model of transfer of longitudinal forces to calculate the longitudinal force at each tire. In the aspect of observer design, we propose a novel observation system, which is consisted of four individual observers connected in a cascaded way. The four observers are developed for the estimation of vertical tire force, lateral tire force and longitudinal tire force and sideslip angle respectively. For the linear system, the Kalman filter is employed. While for the nonlinear system, the EKF, UKF and PF are applied to minimize the estimation errors. In the aspect of adaptive estimation, we propose the algorithms to improve sensor measurement and estimate vehicle parameters in order to stay robust in presence of parameter variation and sensor errors. Furthermore, we also propose to incorporate the digital map to enhance the estimation accuracy. The utilization of digital map could also enable the prediction of vehicle dynamics states and prevent the road accidents. Finally, we implement our algorithm in the experimental vehicle to realize real-time estimation. Experimental data has validated the proposed algorithm.

Accident statistics show that deaths have been increasing year after year for this category of ATV accidents. This is due to several factors including, unsupervised and careless driving habits of the human beings and tendency of these vehicles to undergo unsafe dynamics. Rollover and Frontal flips are two of the table toppers in this category of injuries. The aim of this thesis is to reconstruct the dynamic response of an all-terrain vehicle and its driver in typical crashes. First the dynamics of the vehicle on an uneven road is examined. Next, among all the crash causes, two types of crash simulations; i.e., side rollover and frontal flip are considered. These simulations are carried out using the multibody dynamics simulation tool MSC-ADAMS and the occupant safety design analyzing tool MADYMO. The primary tasks of this thesis are (i) creating an ATV computer model, (ii) creating three different tracks for uneven road performance, roll over and frontal flip simulations (iii) including a hybrid III 50th percentile dummy to analyze the potential injuries and fatalities in these events. The results are analyzed and compared with the awareness of various specifications. Overall the study indicates that the ATV accidents could pose significant potential for injury and fatality to the driver.

This does not leave enough time to carry out the complex calculations required for detailed collision calculations in real time. This thesis presents a method that strikes a compromise, which, although not carrying all the detail necessary for very accurate collision calculations, allows useful simulations to proceed in real time. The method has three parts: collision detection, estimation of the momentum transfer expected to result from the collision, and application of forces in real time to provide the desired momentum transfer. The method uses a common scene graph for collision detection, which allows the system to work with most of the common scene database formats without the need of specialized preprocessing. All of the collision detection and response calculations employ open-source code and are designed to work well at speeds required by real-time vehicle simulation. Examples based on VDANL vehicle dynamics simulation illustrate the utility of the methodology.

Although rollovers are a small percentage of all traffic accidents, they do account for a large proportion of severe and fatal injuries. Specifically, some large passenger vehicles, such as large vans, pickup trucks, and sport utility vehicles, are more prone to rollover accidents with a high center of gravity (CG) and narrow track width. Vehicle rollover accidents may be grouped into two categories: tripped and untripped rollovers. A tripped rollover commonly occurs when a vehicle skids and digs its tires into soft soil or hits a tripping mechanism such as a curb with a sufficiently large lateral velocity. On the other hand, the untripped rollover is induced by extreme maneuvers during critical driving situations, such as excessive speed during cornering, obstacle avoidance, and severe lane change maneuver. In these situations, the forces at the tire-road contact point are large enough to cause the vehicle to roll over. Furthermore, vehicle rollover may occur due to external disturbances such as side-wind and steering excitation. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the dynamic stability and control of tripped and untripped vehicle rollover so as to avoid vehicle rollover accidents. In this book, different dynamic models are used to describe the vehicle rollover under both untripped and special tripped situations. From the vehicle dynamics theory, rollover indices are deduced, and the dynamic stabilities of vehicle rollover are analyzed. In addition, some active control strategies are discussed to improve the anti-rollover performance of the vehicle.
