Book excerpt: A prototype USAF engine health management (EHM) system was developed and ground tested during this Phase II SBIR program. The EHM system is capable of real-time mechanical monitoring and diagnostics, aero-thermal performance monitoring and diagnostics, and "engine signature" based life accumulation. For the first time, state-of-the-art anomaly detection, monitoring, diagnosis and advanced life prediction analysis were integrated together in a single real-time engine health monitoring system. Additionally, the EHM system was developed to assist the 2-level maintenance concept and IHPTET initiatives.

Book excerpt: Widely used for power generation, gas turbine engines are susceptible to faults due to the harsh working environment. Most engine problems are preceded by a sharp change in measurement deviations compared to a baseline engine, but the trend data of these deviations over time are contaminated with noise and non-Gaussian outliers. Gas Turbine Diagnostics: Signal Processing and Fault Isolation presents signal processing algorithms to improve fault diagnosis in gas turbine engines, particularly jet engines. The algorithms focus on removing noise and outliers while keeping the key signal features that may indicate a fault. The book brings together recent methods in data filtering, trend shift detection, and fault isolation, including several novel approaches proposed by the author. Each method is demonstrated through numerical simulations that can be easily performed by the reader. Coverage includes: Filters for gas turbines with slow data availability Hybrid filters for engines equipped with faster data monitoring systems Nonlinear myriad filters for cases where monitoring of transient data can lead to better fault detection Innovative nonlinear filters for data cleaning developed using optimization methods An edge detector based on gradient and Laplacian calculations A process of automating fault isolation using a bank of Kalman filters, fuzzy logic systems, neural networks, and genetic fuzzy systems when an engine model is available An example of vibration-based diagnostics for turbine blades to complement the performance-based methods Using simple examples, the book describes new research tools to more effectively isolate faults in gas turbine engines. These algorithms may also be useful for condition and health monitoring in other systems where sharp changes in measurement data indicate the onset of a fault.

Book excerpt: Procedures for real time evaluation of the inflight health and performance of gas turbine engines and related systems were developed to enhance flight test safety and productivity. These techniques include the monitoring of the engine, the engine control system, thrust vectoring control system health, and the detection of engine stalls. Real time performance techniques were developed for the determination and display of inflight thrust and for aeroperformance drag polars. These new methods were successfully shown on various research aircraft at NASA-Dryden. The capability of NASA's Western Aeronautical Test Range and the advanced data acquisition systems were key factors for implementation and real time display of these methods. Book excerpt: A study was conducted to determine if the 'health' of an operating jet engine could be determined during the transient operating mode. This study was conducted as part of the preliminary work necessary for the design and development of an on-board NAVY fighter jet engine monitoring system. The ultimate objective of the on-board system will be to analyze the health of the engine in real-time and inform the pilot of the condition of the engine(s). This study concentrated on evaluating the gas path parameters since these parameters are responsive indicators of the majority of the causes of NAVY engine removals. The transient analysis investigated in this study indicated that parameter repeatability during the engine transient is adequate to verify specification performance. Also, gas path related anomalies can be detected through transient analysis; and corrected high pressure rotor speed used as the independent variable provides the accuracy and sensitivity necessary for baseline establishment and performance comparison. The inclusion of transient analysis with steady state analysis in a real-time on-board monitoring and analysis system will expand the mission coverage and provide an immediate performance check prior to takeoff as a result of a snap acceleration to takeoff power. Book excerpt: Aircraft engine performance trend monitoring and gas path fault diagnostics are closely related technologies that assist operators in managing the health of their gas turbine engine assets. Trend monitoring is the process of monitoring the gradual performance change that an aircraft engine will naturally incur over time due to turbomachinery deterioration, while gas path diagnostics is the process of detecting and isolating the occurrence of any faults impacting engine flow-path performance. Today, performance trend monitoring and gas path fault diagnostic functions are performed by a combination of on-board and off-board strategies. On-board engine control computers contain logic that monitors for anomalous engine operation in real-time. Off-board ground stations are used to conduct fleet-wide engine trend monitoring and fault diagnostics based on data collected from each engine each flight. Continuing advances in avionics are enabling the migration of portions of the ground-based functionality on-board, giving rise to more sophisticated on-board engine health management capabilities. This paper reviews the conventional engine performance trend monitoring and gas path fault diagnostic architecture commonly applied today, and presents a proposed enhanced on-board architecture for future applications. The enhanced architecture gains real-time access to an expanded quantity of engine parameters, and provides advanced on-board model-based estimation capabilities. The benefits of the enhanced architecture include the real-time continuous monitoring of engine health, the early diagnosis of fault conditions, and the estimation of unmeasured engine performance parameters. A future vision to advance the enhanced architecture is also presented and discussed.

Book excerpt: A key technological concept for producing reliable engine diagnostics and prognostics exploits the benefits of fusing sensor data, information, and/or processing algorithms. This report describes the development of a hybrid engine model for a propulsion gas turbine engine, which is the result of fusing two diverse modeling methodologies: a physics-based model approach and an empirical model approach. The report describes the process and methods involved in deriving and implementing a hybrid model configuration for a commercial turbofan engine. Among the intended uses for such a model is to enable real-time, on-board tracking of engine module performance changes and engine parameter synthesis for fault detection and accommodation. Book excerpt: To assess the technical state of GTE, various tools and methods of diagnostics including instrumental and analytical ones are applied in operation. The analytical approach towards the assessment of technical state of engine is based on diagnostic models and methods. This work suggests some ways of improvement of GTE diagnostic models and methods to be applied in operation. Special attention has been paid to diagnostic matrices (DM) usage in GTE diagnostics, with the matrices being meant for the detection and isolation of faults in gas path of engine. The diagnostic matrices application experience has shown that their application in GTE diagnostics is limited for a number of reasons. Those reasons have been revealed in the paper, and some ways have been suggested allowing one to use diagnostic matrices in GTE diagnostics without restriction. A dedicated software package for automated construction and analysis of the matrices has been developed.

Book excerpt: This book presents new studies in the area of turbomachine mathematical modeling with a focus on models applied to developing engine control and diagnostic systems. The book contains one introductory and four main chapters. The introductory chapter describes the area of modeling of gas and wind turbines and shows the demand for further improvement of the models. The first three main chapters offer particular improvements in gas turbine modeling. First, a novel methodology for the modeling of engine starting is presented. Second, a thorough theoretical comparative analysis is performed for the models of engine internal gas capacities, and practical recommendations are given on model applications, in particular for engine control purposes. Third, multiple algorithms for calculating important unmeasured parameters for engine diagnostics are proposed and compared. It is proven that the best algorithms allow accurate prognosis of engine remaining lifetime. The field of wind turbine modeling is presented in the last main chapter. It introduces a general-purpose model that describes both aerodynamic and electric parts of a wind power plant. Such a detailed physics-based model will help with the development of more accurate control and diagnostic systems. In this way, this book includes four new studies in the area of gas and wind turbine modeling. These studies will be interesting and useful for specialists in turbine engine control and diagnostics.
