Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Driver drowsiness has become a significant threat resulting in traffic accidents and causing severe injuries or death. Therefore, monitoring this condition is paramount to alert drivers, and to avoid fatal accidents. A hardware design to detect the drowsiness is proposed in this thesis and the outputs to justify the thesis is simulated in LT Spice. The drowsiness of the driver is associated with an immediate change in their heart rate. Electrocardiogram (ECG) is used to detect accurate heart rate and hence, used as a parameter in the proposed design. The proposed design consists of a non-contact ECG sensor as an input source and a circuit with a two-stage amplifier to improve the strength of the ECG signal and filters to minimize the noise. A maximum peak ECG output voltage of about 2.8V is obtained in LT Spice. The resulting ECG output is sufficient to detect the drowsiness of a driver and prevents major accidents.

Book excerpt: This SpringerBrief presents the fundamentals of driver drowsiness detection systems, provides examples of existing products, and offers guides for practitioners interested in developing their own solutions to the problem. Driver drowsiness causes approximately 7% of all road accidents and up to 18% of fatal collisions. Proactive systems that are capable of preventing the loss of lives combine techniques, methods, and algorithms from many fields of engineering and computer science such as sensor design, image processing, computer vision, mobile application development, and machine learning which is covered in this brief. The major concepts addressed in this brief are: the need for such systems, the different methods by which drowsiness can be detected (and the associated terminology), existing commercial solutions, selected algorithms and research directions, and a collection of examples and case studies. These topics equip the reader to understand this critical field and its applications. Detection Systems and Solutions: Driver Drowsiness is an invaluable resource for researchers and professionals working in intelligent vehicle systems and technologies. Advanced-level students studying computer science and electrical engineering will also find the content helpful.

This book was released on 2016-09-12 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are approximately 4,000 fatalities in crashes involving trucks and buses in the United States each year. Though estimates are wide-ranging, possibly 10 to 20 percent of these crashes might have involved fatigued drivers. The stresses associated with their particular jobs (irregular schedules, etc.) and the lifestyle that many truck and bus drivers lead, puts them at substantial risk for insufficient sleep and for developing short- and long-term health problems. Commercial Motor Vehicle Driver Fatigue, Long-Term Health and Highway Safety assesses the state of knowledge about the relationship of such factors as hours of driving, hours on duty, and periods of rest to the fatigue experienced by truck and bus drivers while driving and the implications for the safe operation of their vehicles. This report evaluates the relationship of these factors to drivers' health over the longer term, and identifies improvements in data and research methods that can lead to better understanding in both areas.

Book excerpt: This project is the extension of Northland Advanced Transportation System Research Laboratory (NATSRL) FY 2008 and FY2009 projects titled, "Real-time Nonintrusive Detection of Driver Drowsiness," which aims to develop a real-time, nonintrusive driver drowsiness detection system to reduce drowsiness-cause accidents. In our previous research, nonintrusive sensors for drivers' heart beat measurement were developed and implemented on the vehicle steering wheel. Heart rate variability (HRV) was analyzed from the heart beat pulse signals for the detection of driver drowsiness. Promising results were obtained. However, one of the major issues with the previous system is using only one parameter, Low-Frequency (LF)/High-frequency (HF) ratio of HRV, to access the driver's status, which has relative high variability and has different changing patterns for different drivers. In this project, we used multiple parameters for the drowsiness detection, including the LF/HF ratio, steering wheel motion variability and Electroencephalography (EEG) parameters. Correlations between these parameters are analyzed.
