Book excerpt: From memes to resumes, fairy tales to researched arguments, in a striking full-color visual design, The Bedford Book of Genres invites students to unpack how genres work in order to experiment with their own compositions. After capturing the imagination of instructors and students in its successful first edition, the second edition incorporates extensive reviewer feedback to better teach students the rhetorical analysis skills they need to read and compose in any situation. To start the text, the Guide now includes a new Part One that lays out the book’s key concepts--rhetorical situation, the elements of a genre, and multimodal composing--and a substantially revised Part Two with examples arranged by academic, workplace, and public contexts. Throughout the text, Guided Readings provide opportunities to analyze the rhetorical situations and conventions of common public and academic genres, while Guided Process sections follow the decisions that five real students made as they worked in multiple genres and media. With a range of readings from short visual arguments to longer, more complex pieces, the Reader gives students a wealth of sources, models, and inspiration for their own compositions. Now available with Launchpad for The Bedford Book of Genres, the second edition offers a compelling digital option with a complete, interactive, assignable e-book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This anthology provides an overview of the history and theory of Chicano/a art from the 1960s to the present, emphasizing the debates and vocabularies that have played key roles in its conceptualization. In Chicano and Chicana Art—which includes many of Chicano/a art's landmark and foundational texts and manifestos—artists, curators, and cultural critics trace the development of Chicano/a art from its early role in the Chicano civil rights movement to its mainstream acceptance in American art institutions. Throughout this teaching-oriented volume they address a number of themes, including the politics of border life, public art practices such as posters and murals, and feminist and queer artists' figurations of Chicano/a bodies. They also chart the multiple cultural and artistic influences—from American graffiti and Mexican pre-Columbian spirituality to pop art and modernism—that have informed Chicano/a art's practice. Book excerpt: This is a detailed portrait of how an aboriginal tribe of the remote Amazonian region understands the cosmic dimensions of their partnership with the rainforest. Anthropologist Gerardo Reichel-Dolmatoff, who spent most of his life working in Colombia among the Indian tribes of the North-West Amazon, explores the world-view of the Tukano Indians: their view of the forest as a model of the cosmos; the master of the animals; their complex and multi-dimensional bond with their environment; and their social and sexual restrictions in order to harmonise with the rainforest.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The King of Mazy May is a short story by Jack London. John Griffith "Jack" London (born John Griffith Chaney, January 12, 1876 - November 22, 1916) was an American author, journalist, and social activist. He was a pioneer in the then-burgeoning world of commercial magazine fiction and was one of the first fiction writers to obtain worldwide celebrity and a large fortune from his fiction alone. He is best remembered as the author of The Call of the Wild and White Fang, both set in the Klondike Gold Rush, as well as the short stories "To Build a Fire", "An Odyssey of the North", and "Love of Life". He also wrote of the South Pacific in such stories as "The Pearls of Parlay" and "The Heathen", and of the San Francisco Bay area in The Sea Wolf. London was a passionate advocate of unionization, socialism, and the rights of workers and wrote several powerful works dealing with these topics such as his dystopian novel The Iron Heel, his non-fiction expos The People of the Abyss, and The War of the Classes. On July 12, 1897, London (age 21) and his sister's husband Captain Shepard sailed to join the Klondike Gold Rush. This was the setting for some of his first successful stories. London's time in the Klondike, however, was detrimental to his health.

The year Paul Zindel, his sister, Betty, and their mother lived in the town of Travis, Staten Island, New York, was the most important time of his teenage life. It was the year he and Jennifer Wolupopski were best friends. It was the year of the apple tree, the water-head baby, and Cemetery Hill. And it was the year he met Nonno Frankie Vivona, who became his Pigman. Every word of his story is true. And The Pigman & Me has an added bonus--one crucial piece of information: the secret of life, according to the Pigman.
