Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Economic History of the United States The purpose of this book is not to rehearse the events common to political and constitutional histories of the United States, but rather to emphasize the points neglected by them. The keynote of all American history, from whatever standpoint it may be written, is found in the efforts of a virile and ener getic people to appropriate and develop the wonderful natural resources of a new continent and there to realize their ideals of liberty and government. The economic history of the United States is largely the story of the achievements of a people working under free competition, untrammeled by custom, tradition, or political limitations, and whose changing conditions of environment constantly compelled new adapta tions and promoted ingenuity and energy of character. The history of this economic struggle is not one whit less interesting or dramatic than the political history of the same period, while it is absolutely essential to a thorough understanding of the latter. In 1912 the Bureau of the Census of the United States estimated the total wealth of the nation, in terms of money, to be This wealth consisted of land and buildings, live stock, farm implements, manufacturing plants and their equipment, railways, street car lines, light and power stations and other public utilities such as telegraph and telephone systems, all kinds of agricultural and manufactured products, min ing products, personal property of various kinds, and gold and silver. We like to think of the United States as the richest and most prosperous nation in the world; we have pride in the fact that with its huge production of cereals, meats, and cotton, this country performs a greater part in feeding and clothing the world than any other single coun try; with its output of coal, iron and copper, it has a fore most position among modern industrial nations. A study of economic development may serve as the starting point for the reader who wishes an initial survey of the whole field of industry, and as an outline of the field for the student who is pursuing specialized studies. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Economic Tendencies: An Economic History of America IN a work portraying economic evolution from a time genera tions in the past down to the latest practicable moment, in order to form a basis as accurate as possible for predicting the future, it is important to know the date of actual writing. The procession of events during the last six years has altered so drastically, and has transformed so many times, the complexion of public opinion, that words must be interpreted in the light of the date of their utterance. This book was begun in the winter of 1912-13, as soon as the data from the census of 1910 had become available, and some portions remain unchanged since then. On the other hand, some statistical features have been brought down to the fall of 1917, with views in the text to correspond. During 1918 and 1919 the diction of the entire book was revised, and in the latter year the order of chapters was shifted. Occasional foot-notes or paragraphs were added which carry with them evidence of their later date. But, since it was manifestly impossible to bring the entire book into consistency with the viewpoint of these later years, unless it were to be entirely rewritten, care was taken to preserve all of the sentiments of the book in substance as they had been written in 1917 or before. The subdivision of the book into four Parts, namely, Back ground, Economic Principles, Data and Social Reactions, was an afterthought. Each of these four parts comprise references to all four of these topics. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Economic Growth of the United States, 1790-1860 Richard Beyer, John Bowman, Donald Farness, and Keith Phillips have all provided valuable research assistance in organiz ing the statistics for this study. The development of the export and import price indices was a particularly laborious task, and I am very much in their debt for the painstaking care with which the data were gathered and organized. Finally, Mrs. Ralph B. Ander son and Mrs. Robert O. Beale have toiled over this manuscript to a degree that puts me very much in their debt. Book excerpt: This pioneering textbook takes a thematic approach to the subject, resulting in a comprehensive understanding of historic economic issues in the United States. Siegler takes a thematic approach, and provides both the theoretical foundations and historical background needed to gain an in-depth understanding of the subject. Every chapter examines a specific topic, and the chapters are linked to each other to provide an overall view. The chronological approach is represented with a useful timeline as an appendix to show where the specific topics fit in the chronology. Chapter topics include: long-run causes of economic growth; economic history of income and wealth inequality; slavery, segregation, and discrimination; immigration and immigration policies; and an economic history of recessions and depressions. This book is ideally suited as a primary text for undergraduate courses in US economic history, as well as suitable courses on history degree programmes.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from From Gild to Factory: A First Short Course of Economic History The following pages attempt to drive such a shaft - a very slender one - through the mass of our economic history. By its purpose such work must be judged. Far from being intended as in any way a substitute for the study of such works as those enumerated in the List of Authors, these pages will have failed of their purpose if they do not incite a few more students to the study of those very works. Therefore it becomes needless to say how the author is indebted to each and all of them. This little book is founded on those works, and contains little or nothing that cannot be read in further detail in some one or more of them, and nothing at all save what the author earnestly hopes may be so studied. In preparing the Second Edition the opportunity has been taken to comply with the suggestions of experience in using the book for teaching pur poses, and certain omissions have been supplied and some corrections made; whilst in one important respect - Trade Union Law-the narrative has been continued to include more recent legislation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial History of the United States Closely connected with the expansion of the people was the promise of the natural resources. Perhaps no greater influence has been brought to bear upon American life than the fact that for so long a time the people had the comfortable feeling that they had something to fall back upon. What need had they of thrift, endowed as they were with inexhaustible stores of natural wealth? If the young man was not satisfied, he could go West and appropriate his share of the national heritage. How much effect this royal road to wealth had upon such mat ters, for example, as the labor market and the American stand ard of living, one cannot say; but its influence must have been very great.
