Book excerpt: A Short History of Papua New Guinea is a concise book describing the quick and steady growth of the many small, isolated and self-sufficient societies that made up the fledging British Papua and German New Guinea colonies towards the end of the nineteenth century. In less than one hundred years the people in both colonies were united as one nation, achieving independence in 1975. This book traces how the British and German colonies grew and the effects that each colonial authority had on health, religion, education, and trade up to a decade after independence

Book excerpt: New Guinea, the world's largest tropical island, is a land of great contrasts, ranging from small glaciers on its highest peaks to broad mangrove swamps in its lowlands and hundreds of smaller islands and coral atolls along its coasts. Divided between two nations, the island and its neighboring archipelagos form Indonesia’s Papua Province (or Irian Jaya) and the independent nation of Papua New Guinea, both former European colonies. Most books on New Guinea have been guided by these and other divisions, separating east from west, prehistoric from historic, precontact from postcontact, colonial from postcolonial. This is the first work to consider New Guinea and its 40,000-year history in its entirety. The volume opens with a look at the Melanesian region and argues that interlocking exchange systems and associated human interchanges are the "invisible government" through which New Guinea societies operate. Succeeding chapters review the history of encounters between outsiders and New Guinea's populations. They consider the history of Malay involvement with New Guinea over the past two thousand years, demonstrating the extent to which west New Guinea in particular was incorporated into Malay trading and raiding networks prior to Western contact. The impact of colonial rule, economic and social change, World War II, decolonization, and independence are discussed in the final chapter.

Book excerpt: Much has been written about Papua New Guinea over the last century and too often in ways that legitimated or served colonial interests through highly pejorative and racist descriptions of Papua New Guineans. Paying special attention to early travel literature, works of fiction, and colonial reports, laws, and legislation, Regis Tove Stella reveals the complex and persistent network of discursive strategies deployed to subjugate the land and its people.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1976, Papua New Guinea was the first book to interpret the key events that led to the nation’s independence in 1975. In the book, journalist Don Woolford, a correspondent for the Australian Associated Press in Papua New Guinea, describes the ferment and excitement of the 1960s and 1970s, chronicling the former Australian territory’s political development from the first general election for a representative House of Assembly in 1964 through independence. Key figures in the transition, including Michael Somare, John Guise, Albert Maori Kiki, and Josephine Abaijah, make an appearance and their contributions are analyzed adroitly. Woolford’s access to these and other important individuals, as well as to literature produced for the moment that is no longer available, make this an inimitable and invaluable record of the remarkable years that led to the creation of the nation of Papua New Guinea.

Book excerpt: Because Papua and New Guinea were administered by Germany, Britain, and Australia at different points in their history, the experiences of the islands' indigenous inhabitants were diverse and sometimes contradictory. In Colonial New Guinea provides an anthropological view of colonialism and its culture in Papua New Guinea. The rich and nuanced set of testimonies and reflections upon which the contributors draw enable a broad range of historical personae to comment on the reality of colonial life. What emerges is a detailed ethnography that offers new perspectives not only on the history of Papua New Guinea but also on colonialism in general. Book jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Papua or British New Guinea There have been many books published of late years about Papua, and my only excuse for adding to the number is that none of the authors deal with the subject from the same point of view as I have done, nor do any of them cover exactly the same ground. Miss Grimshaw's fascinating work, "The New New Guinea," treats, as its name implies, only of the recent development of the territory; Dr. Seligmann's learned "Melanesians of New Guinea" is occupied with the ethnology of a few tribes; and the Rev. Mr. Chignell's admirable "Outpost in Papua" is almost entirely confined to a description of life in a single village; and in the same way the older books, valuable and interesting as they are, generally deal with some particular aspect of Papuan life rather than with Papua as a whole. It seemed to me, therefore, that there might be room for my book in spite of the number that had already been written. I am fully conscious of my numerous disqualifications for the work that I have undertaken. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
