This book was released on 1991 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This anthology is the second volume of selected articles from the periodical Childhood Education. It includes 82 articles from 1964 to 1985 that represent many aspects of the child and the child's developmental environment. Articles by leaders in the field of childhood education, spokespersons in related fields, and teachers and parents are included. The first of the five major sections concerns the child. The articles in this section reflect the concerns and positions of the society in general: not a standardized, limited view of American culture, but a variety of subcultures and global points of view. The second section deals with the environments of the child's initial and fundamental learning experiences: the family, home, community, and world. The third section includes articles relating to the learning environment of the school. In the fourth section, the status of the profession and the directions in which it is moving are reviewed. The articles in the final section deal with issues concerning the future of childhood education. (GLR)

This book was released on 2012-06-16 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developmental Education is an approach to education in school that aims at promoting children’s cultural development and their abilities to participate autonomously and well-informed in the cultural practices of their community. From the point of view of Cultural-historical Activity theory (CHAT), a play-based curriculum has been developed over the past decades for primary school, which presents activity contexts for pupils in the classroom that create learning and teaching opportunities for helping pupils with appropriating cultural knowledge, skills, and moral understandings in meaningful ways. The approach is implemented in numerous Dutch primary schools classrooms with the explicit intention to support the learning of both pupils and teachers. The book focuses especially on education of young children (4 – 8 years old) in primary school and presents the underpinning concepts of this approach, and chapters on examples of good practices in a variety of subject matter areas, such as literacy (vocabulary acquisition, reading, writing), mathematics, and arts. Successful implementation of Developmental Education in the classroom strongly depends on dynamic assessment and continuous observations of young pupils’ development. Strategies for implementation of both the teaching practices and assessment strategies are discussed in detail in the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The foundation for success in learning to read and write begins in infancy. As early childhood professionals, we have both the opportunity and the privilege to shape the progress young children make in acquiring the literacy skills, oral language skills, and background knowledge vital to their later success in learning to read and write. By engaging infants, toddlers, and preschoolers in experiences that foster oral language and content knowledge, literacy skills, and cognitive ability, we build a foundation for children's later academic success. Promoting children's desire to read and write is as important as helping children develop the necessary understandings and skills essential for learning how to read and write. Without motivation, children will read and write relatively little and only what and when they must. This book addresses four main points: What children need to learn in these early years The strategies that teachers can use to help children acquire these foundations The features of emergent literacy and language understandings and skills How to design the physical environment in early childhood classrooms to support language and literacy learning This revision updates information, cites new research, and includes new figures. The newest edition of this bestselling book will help early childhood professionals and families support young children in acquiring the understandings, knowledge, and skills needed for later success in learning to read and write.

Book Synopsis Developing Early Literacy by : Christopher J. Lonigan
Download or read book Developing Early Literacy written by Christopher J. Lonigan and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Assessment of Educational Progress reveals that 37 percent of U.S. fourth graders fail to achieve basic levels of reading achievement. In 1997, the U.S. Congress asked that a review of research be conducted to determine what could be done to improve reading and writing achievement. The resulting "Report of the National Reading Panel: Teaching Children to Read" (NICHD, 2000) has been influential in helping to guide reading-education policy and practice in the United States. However, that report did not examine the implications of instructional practices used with children from birth through age 5. To address this gap in the knowledge base, the National Early Literacy Panel (NELP) was convened. The panel was asked to apply a similar methodological review process to that used by the National Reading Panel (NRP) to issues of instructional practices for young children so that parents and teachers could better support their emerging literacy skills. The NELP report represents a systematic and extensive synthesis of the published research literature concerning children's early literacy skills. It provides educators and policymakers with important information about the early skills that are implicated in later literacy learning, as well as information about the type of instruction that can enhance these skills. The results also identify areas in which additional research is needed. The meta-analyses conducted by the panel showed that a wide range of interventions had a positive impact on children's early literacy learning.
