Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo, who ruled the Dominican Republic from 1930 until his assassination in 1961, was one of the longest and bloodiest in Latin American history. The Dictator’s Seduction is a cultural history of the Trujillo regime as it was experienced in the capital city of Santo Domingo. Focusing on everyday forms of state domination, Lauren Derby describes how the regime infiltrated civil society by fashioning a “vernacular politics” based on popular idioms of masculinity and fantasies of race and class mobility. Derby argues that the most pernicious aspect of the dictatorship was how it appropriated quotidian practices such as gossip and gift exchange, leaving almost no place for Dominicans to hide or resist. Drawing on previously untapped documents in the Trujillo National Archives and interviews with Dominicans who recall life under the dictator, Derby emphasizes the role that public ritual played in Trujillo’s exercise of power. His regime included the people in affairs of state on a massive scale as never before. Derby pays particular attention to how events and projects were received by the public as she analyzes parades and rallies, the rebuilding of Santo Domingo following a major hurricane, and the staging of a year-long celebration marking the twenty-fifth year of Trujillo’s regime. She looks at representations of Trujillo, exploring how claims that he embodied the popular barrio antihero the tíguere (tiger) stoked a fantasy of upward mobility and how a rumor that he had a personal guardian angel suggested he was uniquely protected from his enemies. The Dictator’s Seduction sheds new light on the cultural contrivances of autocratic power.

Book excerpt: For the first time ever, a book unravels the complex process of the tremendous delegitimization efforts directed toward Israel. "The War of a Million Cuts" explains how these attempts at the delegitimization of Israel, as well as anti-Semitism can be fought. The book describes the hateful messages of those who defame Israel and the Jews, details why anti-Semitism and anti-Israelism have the same core motifs, and discusses the main groups of inciters, including Muslim states, Muslims in the Western world, politicians, media, NGOs, church leaders, those on the extreme left and the extreme right, Jewish self-haters, academics, social democrats and many others. It explains how the hate messages are effectively transmitted to the public at large, and discusses what impact the delegitimization has already made on Israel and the Jews.

Book excerpt: John Ross has been living in the old colonial quarter of Mexico City for the last three decades, a rebel journalist covering Mexico and the region from the bottom up. He is filled with a gnawing sense that his beloved Mexico City's days as the most gargantuan, chaotic, crime-ridden, toxically contaminated urban stain in the western world are doomed, and the monster he has grown to know and love through a quarter century of reporting on its foibles and tragedies and blight will be globalized into one more McCity. El Monstruo is a defense of place and the history of that place. No one has told the gritty, vibrant histories of this city of 23 million faceless souls from the ground up, listened to the stories of those who have not been crushed, deconstructed the Monstruo's very monstrousness, and lived to tell its secrets. In El Monstruo, Ross now does.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Don’t bother looking in the history books for what has killed the most Americans. Look instead at your dinner table. We eat too much of the wrong foods and not enough of the right foods. Scientific research continually indicates nationwide vitamin and mineral deficiencies in our country, and we spend over a trillion dollars each year on disease care. Is it any surprise that doctors consistently place among the very highest incomes?Andrew Saul has seen enough of this situation, and in Doctor Yourself, he gives you the power you need to change it. Citing numerous scientific evidence, as well as case studies from his decades of practice, Dr. Saul explodes the myth that an army of medical specialists and pharmaceutical drugs are necessary to maintain our health. The human body evolved to live well and fight off disease on a supply of only a dozen or so essential nutrients. Unfortunately, modern meat-laden, high-sugar diets provide catastrophically inadequate levels of those nutrients. Using the guidelines and protocols for diet and vitamin megadosing laid out in Doctor Yourself, you can not only prevent disease from getting a foothold in the first place, but also literally cure yourself of illnesses already in progress without resorting to drugs or surgery. One of the most comprehensive guides to nutritional therapy ever published, Doctor Yourself provides proven methods for combating almost every possible health condition-from asthma and Alzheimer’s disease to cancer, depression, heart disease, and more-all presented in Dr. Saul’s unforgettable style. Whether he’s delivering commonsense tips on subjects such as weight loss and longevity or praising the healthy glow of a carotene tan, Dr. Saul takes the starch out of healthcare and makes taking charge of your family’s health an experience both valuable and fun.

Book excerpt: This is the first collection of critical essays that explores Oscar Wilde’s interest in children’s culture, whether in relation to his famous fairy stories, his life as a caring father to two small boys, his place as a defender of children’s rights within the prison system, his fascination with youthful beauty, and his theological contemplation of what it means to be a child in the eyes of God. The collection also examines the ways in which Wilde’s works—not just his fairy stories—have been adapted for young audiences.

Book excerpt: 'Barcelona is colour, noise, heat, dust, violent traffic and quick-moving people. Many of the men carry rifles slung on their backs...' Tom Wintringham (1898-1949) was a pioneer of the International Brigades in the Spanish Civil War, and commander of the British Battalion in the bloody Battle of Jarama in February 1937, at which he was wounded. English Captain is Wintringham's own startling account of his service to the cause of the Spanish republic. '[Wintringham] was a remarkable man of ideas; the foremost Marxist expert on warfare, a published poet, a brilliant propagandist... He was also a man of action who believed that few things in life could be achieved unless you were prepared to fight for them.' Hugh Purcell, History Today
