Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Under the Cover follows the life trajectory of a single work of fiction from its initial inspiration to its reception by reviewers and readers. The subject is Jarrettsville, a historical novel by Cornelia Nixon, which was published in 2009 and based on an actual murder committed by an ancestor of Nixon's in the postbellum South. Clayton Childress takes you behind the scenes to examine how Jarrettsville was shepherded across three interdependent fields—authoring, publishing, and reading—and how it was transformed by its journey. Along the way, he covers all aspects of the life of a book, including the author's creative process, the role of the literary agent, how editors decide which books to acquire, how publishers build lists and distinguish themselves from other publishers, how they sell a book to stores and publicize it, and how authors choose their next projects. Childress looks at how books get selected for the front tables in bookstores, why reviewers and readers can draw such different meanings from the same novel, and how book groups across the country make sense of a novel and what it means to them. Drawing on original survey data, in-depth interviews, and groundbreaking ethnographic fieldwork, Under the Cover reveals how decisions are made, inequalities are reproduced, and novels are built to travel in the creation, production, and consumption of culture.

Book excerpt: I spent the first half of my life searching although, had you asked, I couldn't have told you for what I was searching. Perhaps it was for love, for an end to loneliness, for someone to listen, perhaps for answers to my questions about the meaning of it all. Sometimes that search seemed futile but I was always aware of an elusive something, just out of my grasp, something that every once in a while revealed itself momentarily and kept me searching. Author Elizabeth Russell's dramatic story speaks of the isolation and longing deep within us that is tempered by an appreciation of the awe-inspiring world in which we live. If being human means being fully engaged in knowing oneself, then Reading Under the Covers may inspire others who have abandoned the search for self or have never engaged in it. Reading Under the Covers is intended to generate a conversation that is missing in society today-a conversation about aging that views life as an opportunity not to be squandered, but to be cherished until the end.

Book excerpt: Lauren Willig's Pink Carnation novels have been called "fun [and] fresh" (Kirkus Reviews) and "clever and playful " (Detroit Free Press). Now she introduces readers to a mismatched pair who find passion in the most astonishing of places... Secret agent Augustus Whittlesby has spent a decade undercover in France, posing as an insufferably bad poet. The French surveillance officers can’t bear to read his work closely enough to recognize the information drowned in a sea of verbiage. New York-born Emma Morris Delagardie is a thorn in Augustus’s side. An old school friend of Napoleon’s stepdaughter, she came to France with her uncle, eloped with a Frenchman, and has been rattling around the salons of Paris ever since. Now widowed, she entertains herself by holding a weekly salon, and loudly critiquing Augustus’s poetry. As Napoleon pursues his plans for the invasion of England, Whittlesby hears of a top-secret device to be demonstrated at a house party. The catch? The only way in is with Emma, who has been asked to write a masque for the weekend’s entertainment. In this complicated masque within a masque, nothing goes quite as scripted—especially Augustus’s unexpected feelings for Emma.

Book excerpt: Halfway through her first year on the job, Melissa Montclair decides the best part of teaching is winter break. And the best part of break is the Perfect Ten she meets in a bar on New Year's Eve. Posing as an exchange student at Hamilton High is finally the assignment Officer Spence Vega has been hoping for. Now he has a shot at getting to the bottom of the town's recent molly epidemic. There's only a couple of problems: first, history is taught by the curvy bombshell he banged on New Year's. Second, his growing suspicion is that she's the dealer he's looking for. The job was supposed to be an easy in-and-out, not the teacher. If only they could stop getting under the covers, staying undercover would be so much easier.

Book excerpt: "Wendy Lesser's extraordinary alertness, intelligence, and curiosity have made her one of America's most significant cultural critics," writes Stephen Greenblatt. In Why I Read, Lesser draws on a lifetime of pleasure reading and decades of editing one of the most distinguished literary magazines in the country, The Threepenny Review, to describe her love of literature. As Lesser writes in her prologue, "Reading can result in boredom or transcendence, rage or enthusiasm, depression or hilarity, empathy or contempt, depending on who you are and what the book is and how your life is shaping up at the moment you encounter it." Here the reader will discover a definition of literature that is as broad as it is broad-minded. In addition to novels and stories, Lesser explores plays, poems, and essays along with mysteries, science fiction, and memoirs. As she examines these works from such perspectives as "Character and Plot," "Novelty," "Grandeur and Intimacy," and "Authority," Why I Read sparks an overwhelming desire to put aside quotidian tasks in favor of reading. Lesser's passion for this pursuit resonates on every page, whether she is discussing the book as a physical object or a particular work's influence. "Reading literature is a way of reaching back to something bigger and older and different," she writes. "It can give you the feeling that you belong to the past as well as the present, and it can help you realize that your present will someday be someone else's past. This may be disheartening, but it can also be strangely consoling at times." A book in the spirit of E. M. Forster's Aspects of the Novel and Elizabeth Hardwick's A View of My Own, Why I Read is iconoclastic, conversational, and full of insight. It will delight those who are already avid readers as well as neophytes in search of sheer literary fun.

Book excerpt: Dara Ruminor is a serious young duelist in the mountaintop kingdom of Vertigon, a land of dramatic cliffs and misty peaks where mysterious Fire magic runs through the stones like blood. The secluded kingdom has been peaceful for a hundred years. Swords are used for sport, and successful athletes live like kings as long as the crowds love them. Eighteen-year-old Dara needs to find a wealthy patron in order to duel professionally and avoid a lifetime working in her parents' Fire Lantern shop. Her efforts are disrupted when her coach asks her to train with Prince Siv, an infuriating-if handsome-young man who refuses to take the sport as seriously as she does. But the prince's life may be in danger, and soon Dara will discover that Vertigon isn't as peaceful as she thought. As threats emerge from the shadows, Dara will have to raise her sword to protect Siv-if he doesn't irritate her so much that she decides to run him through herself. From the author of the Seabound Chronicles comes a new fantasy series about sword fighting, cur-dragons, molten Fire magic, and one young woman's effort to prove herself.

Book excerpt: They lie underfoot, embellished and gleaming. They seal off and provide entry to an underground world of conduits, water mains, power lines, and sewers. They appear by the thousands in our cities, but very few people ever look at them or think about them as art. At once completely ordinary and totally unexpected, manhole covers present an infinite variety of design in the commonplace as well as a record of defunct utility companies, forgotten business firms, and obsolete foundries. Manhole Covers documents this singular form of urban industrial art and its place in American culture. Mimi and Robert Melnick first revealed their obsession with street hardware twenty years ago in a remarkable little book called Manhole Covers of Los Angeles (1974). Printed in a small format and a limited edition, it quickly went out of print and is now a scarce collector's item. But that was just an introduction to their larger project, which has come to fruition in this book of 200 photographs and an extended narrative documenting manhole covers throughout the United States and discussing the history of their use, manufacture, and function. A subject that at first seems straightforward and commonplace becomes redolent and poetic in the Melnicks' hands, for their hieroglyphic reading of manhole covers reveals a chapter of urban history that can only be recovered from the logos and markings of these early disks. There are square lids, convex lids, perforated lids. And the older ones wear an astonishingly diverse range of anything-but-blank faces expressed in raised crosses, waffle grids, cut-out diamonds, radial stars, floral patterns, and honeycomb treads. The diversity of design corresponds to an equally diverse typology of form and function, as indicated by their evocative labels: handholes, vents, coalholes, grates, lampholes, storm drains, steam covers, meter lids, traffic buttons.

Book excerpt: Resonance. It's a given on the ice planet, forced upon you by the parasitic symbiont called the 'khui'. With resonance, a guy and a girl are paired up because they'll make great babies. It's a survival mechanism necessary for this sparsely-populated world we're stranded on...and romantic, in a weird, alien way. Everyone expects resonance to happen when twenty newcomers are dropped onto the frosty world. I doubt anyone expects the gorgeous, golden god named Ashtar to resonate to someone like me, though. He's fierce. Flirty. Powerful. Disgustingly handsome.I'm...not any of those things. I'm bland. Boring. Clumsy. But resonance seems to think we'd be great together. And Ashtar does, too...___The Icehome series features all of the adventure, humor and community you've come to expect in the Ice Planet Barbarians series, but it stands on its own. You do not need to read the other series (or be caught up) in order to read VERONICA'S DRAGON. I do recommend reading LAUREN'S BARBARIAN to get the full experience. Enjoy!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This extraordinary new book by the British author, John Joss, will amaze, entertain and educate readers of all ages. Its 300 pages contain fifty remarkable 'incidents, ' each a riveting story in itself. INCIDENTS is a sweeping biographical chronicle of a venturesome, joyful and successful life. It moves, with never a dull page, from amusing and poignant childhood anecdotes to risking his life- flying military aircraft and gliders, racing on two and four wheels, and sailing the oceans. The breadth and depth of experience and the sheer audacity of this multi-faceted and enterprising man would be hard to equal by many men, combined. John Joss entered the Royal Navy in England at 16, took initial pilot training, but was near-fatally injured in a motorcycle accident while returning to his ship. Invalided from the Service, he went to work, writing initially for a motorcycle magazine, then for industry. He emigrated to America, working first for corporations, then freelance, writing about business, technology and military aviation and participating in the world technology business center, Silicon Valley. He has raced cars, motorcycles, dinghies and yachts, trodden London's West End stages, explored Mexico, worked in the Gulf of Mexico oil patch, flown the Space Shuttle Simulator, evaded a Soviet military spy in Washington, helped find the sunken nuclear submarine Thresher, flown with the Blue Angels, the Marine Corps and U.S. Air Force and written business plans for Silicon Valley startups. He became the first journalist-pilot to fly and write about the U-2 spy plane, dodged a minefield at Fort Irwin, California, wrote for major media, did radio commercials and documentary voice-overs, soared gliders in the Sierra Nevada, created a high-tech series for network radio, commentated at car and motorcycle racetracks, sailed around the world, penned twenty novels, nonfiction books, screenplays and plays, and fathered three daughters. Not boring. Just as he wished.
