Book Synopsis Handbook of Dutch Church History by : Herman J. Selderhuis
Download or read book Handbook of Dutch Church History written by Herman J. Selderhuis and published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht. This book was released on 2014-12-10 with total page 680 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Herman Selderhuis as editor of this volume has brought together a team of experts, resulting in a unique approach since each chapter is co-written by a catholic and a protestant author, who have all integrated the latest research results. Each section begins with a brief historiographical overview. The same time, ecclesiastical events are always set within a greater framework of political, social, and cultural developments for which reason each author has taken the liberty to describe its own method. The user will find in this book tables, diagrams, and illustrations. Also many source texts are integrated in the narration. Theses texts are intended to bring the described events and people closer to the reader and, as it were, to let them speak the words. The name of the book as "Handbook of the church history of the Netherlands" immediately brings to mind three problematic complexes which are relevant to its user. First, there is the nature of a handbook, that is intended to be a good tool but also has its limitations: it stimulates and necessitates the use of further books. Second, the area. The Netherlands is a plurality and that is also noticeable in its church history, for each region, town, and village has its own church history. Third, the history of the church for sure is the most important aspect, but this history can only be understood if it is described in the context of political and social developments.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Historical Literature in the Fifteenth Century: With an Appendix of Chronicles and Historical Pieces Hitherto for the Most Part Unprinted The purpose and scope of this volume (which is founded on a course of lectures delivered at Oxford in 1910) are explained sufficiently in the introductory chapter. I have added an appendix of short chronicles and historical pieces, which, with some partial exceptions, have not hitherto been printed. Their primary object is to illustrate the text; thus the interest of some of them is mainly textual or literary; but others, as notably the Northern Chronicle and the Sherborne Annals, have an intrinsic value of their own. They are all too short to have obtained independent publication their usefulness will, I hope, be increased by their collection in the same place. Book Synopsis Humanism, Reading, & English Literature 1430-1530 by : Daniel Wakelin
Download or read book Humanism, Reading, & English Literature 1430-1530 written by Daniel Wakelin and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2007-06-28 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humanism is usually thought to come to England in the early sixteenth century. In this book, however, Daniel Wakelin uncovers the almost unknown influences of humanism on English literature in the preceding hundred years. He considers the humanist influences on the reception of some of Chaucer's work and on the work of important authors such as Lydgate, Bokenham, Caxton, and Medwall, and in many anonymous or forgotten translations, political treatises, and documents from the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. At the heart of his study is a consideration of William Worcester, the fifteenth-century scholar. Wakelin can trace the influence of humanism much earlier than was thought, because he examines evidence in manuscripts and early printed books of the English study and imitation of antiquity, in polemical marginalia on classical works, and in the ways in which people copied and shared classical works and translations. He also examines how various English works were shaped by such reading habits and, in turn, how those English works reshaped the reading habits of the wider community. Humanism thus, contrary to recent strictures against it, appears not as 'top-down' dissemination, but as a practical process of give-and-take between writers and readers. Humanism thus also prompts writers to imagine their potential readerships in ways which challenge them to re-imagine the political community and the intellectual freedom of the reader. Our views both of the fifteenth century and of humanist literature in English are transformed.
