From being the possession of the few, regarded by the people as a form of black art, read ing has come to be the heritage of the many. The man who can not read to some extent is now as rare as five hundred years ago he that could. By reading we satisfy our instant craving for current news, we read for the pleasure that literature affords, and we stand on the shoulders of our ancestors in all realms of knowledge. A librarian has said, Take away our reading, and the observation possible to one man, with the thought it will awaken, may result in shrewdness, even profundity, but they can never give him breadth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Teach Reading the Public Schools This book is intended primarily as a manual for teachers of reading in the public schools. In the preparation of the work the author has borne in mind the chief needs of the teacher: First, that he should thoroughly understand how thought and feeling are expressed; and, second, that he should have a definite graded method of instruction, in which the simple precedes the complex, and in which one element, and one only, is presented at a time. The reader or hearer must not be tasked to understand what is read. He must be so familiar with all words and phrases in ordinary use, that he can call them properly, and attach the proper meaning to them without an effort. And every public school should furnish at least this measure of knowledge to every pupil that attends a sufficient length of time. To read the printed page, is first and most important but the pupil should also be. Taught to read writing readily - ran acquisition of no little value in the daily transactions of life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Public-School System of the United States The material contained in this volume will consist of the most important of the data that I collected during a journey extending over a period of more than five months, made under the auspices of "The Forum," for the purpose of studying the public-school system of the United States. The facts presented in the first part of the present work do not vary materially from those presented in a series of articles recently published in that magazine. The matter contained in the second part, however, - the part devoted exclusively to the compositions written by the children and the drawings made by them, - appears here for the first time. In undertaking this journey it was my aim not only to learn what methods of instruction were commonly followed in our country, and the general condition of our schools, but also to investigate the manner in which the schools of different cities were managed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Classified Reading: Books for the School, the Library, and the Home, With a Full Bibliography of Education Much contemporary work is of this vital character, but the greater num ber of valuable books for the teacher are not among recent publications. The School Classic derives its life from the immortality of the literature it presents. The value of the school edition is in inverse proportion to the number of notes, the extent of adaptation and abridgment, and, for the old masters must be handled with due reverence, the childishness of the binding. Every hour of the day in every grade of the public schools, may be made fuller and richer in its results, by the use of the right books by teach ers and pupils. This addition to the teacher's power has become so widely recognized that nothing is more common than demands like the following. It Opens to them a world of vast and varied literature. There are good books, good magazines and good papers, and there are bad books, bad maga zines and bad papers. While the printing press is thus a great engine of civilization, it is at the same time a great instrumentality for evil. As there is no better way to protect a child from evil than to make him a lover of good literature, so there is no surer way to corrupt him than by bringing him in contact with bad literature. The public school teaches the child to read, but it does not teach him what to read or how to read. It gives him the ability to interpret the printed page, but it fails in a great measure to cultivate in him a taste for that which is pure, elevating and instructive. It must not be forgotten that by giving the child the ability to read, we put it in his power to read the worst kind of books, and that, if left to himself, he will be quite as likely to take poisonous mental food as to take wholesome mental food. Indeed I think that, in view of the attractive garb in which vicious literature is clothed, he will be more likely to read to his injury than to his profit. The person, then, who teaches children to read and fails to cultivate in them a taste for good literature, puts an instrument into their hands which may possibly be used by them to their own destruction. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Summer Work in Public Schools Former lengths of school years. During the earlier part of the nineteenth century, and even later, it was not unusual for rural and small - town children, especially girls and small boys, to attend school during a considerable part of the summer rather than during the severe winter weather. Probably the chief cause was that because of the lack of good roads and the distances that must be travelled to reach the schools, it was difficult to attend school during the winter. However, as roads were improved and as cities and towns became more numerous, the practice Of having summer terms became less common until it has become the almost universal practice for the longest vacation period of the year to come during the summer months, or perhaps to include all of them. In the larger cities Of the country conditions were different. Many, probably most, of them formerly had school years much longer than is the custom now, with Short vacations including only a small part of the summer. For example, the Commissioner of Education1 has re ported data on lengths of school years about 1841-42. Some of the lengths are reported in days, some in weeks, and some in months. Boston is stated to have had a session of 224 days, Washington of 238, Philadelphia Of and Detroit of 253. That of Cleveland was forty - three weeks in length, that of Chicago forty-eight, and that of. New York forty-nine. Brooklyn, Baltimore, and Cincinnati had eleven-month sessions, whereas Buffalo had one of twelve months. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Public Schools in the United States of America In modern times the ideas of popular Education have Sprung up as necessities. But these ideas, to a great ex tent, have been transplanted from the countries of Europe to the United States of America, hardly differently from the manner in which the Secondary School was introdu ced, the history of which extends back to the beginning of civilization in Europe. Yet the schools of Europe have gradually assumed a character, so peculiar to the different nations, that it is easy to know the German from the French or English institution. And still, though it is true that the nature of educational institutions is certainly determined to a great extent by nationality, social and political interests and the standard of civilization which has been reached by each particular nation, nevertheless the achievements of one nation in the department of education like the re searches of science, cannot long remain unknown to others. And for that reason, despite their national peculiarities, we find that the schools of all European countries have much in common, and that the fundamental ideas pervading those of England, France, Germany and Switzerland are at the present day much the same. That the results' which are achieved in the different countries are so dissimilar is ow ing to two things: Knowledge or ignorance of the best methods and the skill or deficiency of the instructors. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History for Graded and District Schools "Truth is one! And in all lands beneath the sun, Whoso has eyes to see may see The tokens of its unity." The purpose of this book is to present a framework of history for the graded and district schools; that is, for children from six to about fifteen years of age. The effort has been made to present the material in such connection throughout the grades that it would gradually develop in pupils' minds the idea of the unity of history, and thus finally lead them to feel that history is an unbroken stream of life, of which the present in general, and their lives in particular, constitute an important part. It is not thought that the material presented here for each grade will be entirely sufficient for teachers who have exceptional advantages for carrying on primary history work. It is intended as a general framework, furnishing, perhaps, the greater part of the material which the teacher having all the grades will be able to teach, but which the teacher having but one or two grades and good library advantages should use to build and to enlarge upon, according to particular circumstances. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Private Reading of Public-School Teachers, And, General Suggestions Concerning the Teaching of Music in the Grades A study of literature by types is perhaps the best method of mak ing a first-hand survey of the general field of good writing. Within each of the two general divisions, prose and poetry, there are several definite forms, including the prose types known as history, oratory, biography, the letter, the essay, the novel, and the short story; and the poetic forms called the epic, the lyric, the drama, and the ballad.* The benefits to be derived from reading and reflecting upon some of the best examples of these eleven literary types are in most cases too obvious to need elaboration here; but there are certain large effects that the careful reading of literature of the right kind pro duces, and concerning these a few suggestions may well be made. Some literature is read primarily for entertainment, with the avowed purpose of driving dull care away. One reader may be entertained best by the short story, another by the novel, another by the letter, While still another may find that poetry of a certain type Will lead to the sessions of sweet, silent thought that will rest the mind and relieve it of the cares of the day. A word of caution may be inserted at this point. Let it be remembered that in choos ing material that will entertain there is no need to go outside the bounds of real literature. Many great works have a strong narra tive element, but to appreciate their greatness we must look beyond the story and find qualities that are products less of the imagination than of the intellect. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Graded and Annotated Catalog of Books in the Public Library of the District of Columbia, for Use in the Schools of the City The Public Library of the District of Columbia furnishes to the Public Schools of the city, through the school stations and through the cooperation of the grade teachers, 'many thousands of books during the school year. It is more and more forced on the attention of the library that numerically only a small portion of the children of Washington are being satisfactorily reached by the main library and its one branch. It is to the schools, reaching every locality, to which the library looks for help in solving the problem. A book in the hands of a teacher and recommended by her carries great weight. There fore by sending small libraries to all of the schools, more par ticularly the distant ones, we hope to reach the right child with the right book at the right time. Any teacher may select or request the library to select one book for each child in her class or any number of books up to fifty, which will be sent to her by the library and called for at the end of two months, after notification, unless she desires to retain them for a longer period. For the convenience of the teachers and to advise them of the material to be had for supplementary work and for pleasurable reading this graded and annotated catalog of books has been prepared. It has been arranged by subject that the material on the work being studied may be readily found. There is also an author index. Many of the books listed in a certain grade will be found useful in a lower or higher grade, the grading being only suggestive. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Teaching Reading in Ten Cities Perhaps no plan for helping teachers through an educational journal has ever been a greater success than the series of "Teaching Reading in Ten Cities," which appeared last year in Primary Education. Everybody who is responsible for the teaching of little children is keenly interested in the problem of teaching them to read. The ways are numerous. The results record every shade of satisfaction and dissatisfaction known to teachers. Rumors of what was being done in this branch of instruction in other schools reached the teachers; but they could not go and see for themselves. For this reason the work of the primary schools in ten leading cities of the Union was brought to them by means of this valuable series, prepared either by the primary supervisor or a leading teacher in each locality. The scheme became popular at once. Here was a chance to visit other schools and compare notes without leaving their own work. Many school principals used each instalment as it appeared as the text for a teachers' meeting for the study of teaching youngest children to read. The ten articles cover every prominent method or system for teaching reading to beginners now in use in our public schools, and primary teachers have found in them the help, the breadth, and the inspiration that the series was designed to give. It is a happy thought of the publishers of Primary Education to arrange these articles in book form for more convenient use and quick reference by teachers. May the new readers appreciate them as much as did the first, and may the first enjoy them all over again.
