Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reading and Language Lessons for Evening Schools All the lessons are based upon class-room experience in teaching the foreign-born. The subject-matter is familiar to students of evening schools. In all of the lessons talking the language precedes writing it. This textbook is designed for use in classes composed of students of several nationalities as well as in classes of but one nationality. It may also be used in classes of native-born adults who do not read and write English. Evening-school students wish to know the vernacular, both spoken and written, and are not concerned with language as a means of understanding literature. They study English for the sake of communicating with others, and need an accurate and fairly large vocabulary of words relating to common matters. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Standard Short Course for Evening Schools: Reading for Adult Beginners The purpose of this book is to present a systematic course of practical elementary lessons in English, including reading, language, and spelling, in arithmetic, in civil government, and in physiology for students in evening schools, especially the foreign-born and the adult beginners. In the past ten years, we have received over seven million new citizens from the countries overseas. A surprisingly large number of them de sire instruction in evening schools; but the ordinary primary textbooks are entirely unsuited to their needs, powers, and interests. For the convenience of towns and cities with evening schools desiring a one-book course, this complete text has been pre pared largely from my series of four books issued by the same publishers some years ago and now in use in many schools. The more important additions are in phonics and in spelling, which should be emphasized in the instruction of classes composed of the foreign-born of several nationalities, since sight and sound are the two available means of intercommunication. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Lessons in English: For Foreigners in Evening Schools The following suggestions based upon experience may be of use to teachers: New Words. It is intended that the meanings of many of the words used in the text be developed, if nouns, by having before the class the objects named, or if verbs or prepositions, by action or gesture. For instance, the meaning of basin, quart, hat, map, and similar words should be developed by reference to these objects before the class; and in reading lessons when a pupil asks, What is this? He should hold or touch the object asked about. Such adjectives as full, empty, wide, and long can best be explained in connection with the measures. The teacher can most readily explain such verbs as walk, carry, measure, wash, etc., by performing before the class the actions indicated. The relations in, on, under, near, by, etc., can readily be taught by gesture. At the end of the text will be found a list of words, not readily explained otherwise, translated into German, Polish, Italian, and Yiddish. After the meanings of all new words in a lesson have been explained, the pupil should write the words, and their meanings, in his own language, in a book kept especially for that purpose. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Normal Course in Reading: First Reader, Word Pictures and Language Lessons Probably no books in our schools represent, on the whole, more effort and enterprise on the part of publisher and author alike, than the school reading books. They have constantly received contributions from our ablest and most thoughtful educators, and to their publication have been given the best endeavors of our most successful schoolbook makers facts which abundantly attest the importance of the subject and the interest taken in it by the educational public. That there have yet remained possibilities for improvement in this department of school work cannot be doubted by any who have followed the discussions of the subject among educators and in the press. Our best teachers have not been satisfied with the readers of stereotyped pattern, and have over and again ex pressed a desire for something different and better. All this has revealed and emphasized the necessity for improvement, not alone in the manner of. Presentation, but also in the subject-matter presented. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Classics Old and New: A Series of School Readers; A Third Reader At frequent intervals through the volume, language lessons are given which furnish a systematic language drill, without any attempt whatever to teach technical grammar. The suggestions of each language lesson should not be limited in application to the story under which it is found, but should be judiciously used by teachers as an exercise with other reading lessons. Each colored illustration teaches its own lesson and has an educational value. These illustrations give pictures of the people, costumes, and homes of other lands, and are of geographic or historic interest. Among these, special attention may be called to the following, viz.: the suggestions for language work, which ingenious teachers will extend and apply in connection with very many lessons; the letter writing; the numerous lessons in nature study; the many instructive stories that will appeal to the child's better nature and strengthen his love of right doing; lessons relating to the history of our country or to the lives of great men; short pieces to be memorized, occurring here and there throughout the volume. Many of these features, while of great importance in themselves, will appeal especially to teachers who desire to use the reading lesson as a center of correlation with other studies. Every lesson has been developed in actual teaching both by the author and by teachers under his supervision. The lessons come as the result of experiment under conditions varying from the un graded rural school to the most advanced graded schools. To provide for these varying conditions with a language series that is rich in content, well-organized, definite, yet flexible, and at the same time practical and teachable, has been the great problem. The books are to some extent a composite of the best thought of teachers in many states. To all who have inspired, encouraged, and assisted him, the author desires to express his gratitude. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Third Book of Reading Lessons Among the moral and religlous p1eces ln prose and - poe try, the pupils of the Christian Schools will recognise the effusions of One whose voice once supplied the lessons now furnished by h1s writings, and whose living example im pressed the moral which h1s memory must illustrate for the future. The look of attention and the tone Of benevolence, in which these lessons were conveyed, will indeed be missed, but 'his spirit will still speak to the hearts of those over Whom be bent with more than parental solicitude.' In re calling the memory'of one who, for their sakes, forsook not only the first circle Of literary distinction, but the, more en dearing one Of kindred and of home, it will not fail also to convey the salutary truth, that the highest attainments Of the scholar may be still further exalted and ennobled by re ligion; that the lustre of genius never appears to such ad vantage as through the veil Of humility; and that the moral beauty of virtue itself acquires an additional charm, when exercised in. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Second Book of Reading Lessons: For the Use of Schools in the British-American Provinces In the First Book of this series, the pupil has been carried through the range of the various words of one syllable. In this, the Second Book, the pupil is carried on from words of one syllable to those of two and three syllables; and the same principle has been adopted, namely, the combination of interest and improvement. The lessons have been carefully graduated, commencing at first with Nursery Tales and Rhymes such as will be most acceptable to the young mind, and advancing to Fables and Anecdotes, and Stories illustrating some great moral truth. The words at first are as simple and easy as it is possible to make them, and they gradually become longer and more difficult, while the interest is maintained by the lessons never being wearisome, but in all cases light and cheerful.
