Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are three important problems facing the world: deple tion of fossil fUels, demand for more energy, and the pollution of our environment. The world contains limited amounts of fossil fuels. They are being depleted, at an ever-growing rate. Peoples of the world are demanding more and more energy. This is due to the desires of peoples to improve their standard of living--and the standard of living is directly proportional to the energy con sumed. In addition, the world is demanding a cleaner environment to live in. Many of us, scientists and engineers, believe that replacing fossil fuels with the inexhaustible and clean synthetic fuel, hydrogen (produced from non-fossil primary sources of energy) will answer the above problems. Hydrogen, as the fUel of the post-fossil-fUel era, was pre dicted more than a hundred years ago by that great forecaster of the future, Jules Verne, in his novel The Mysterious Island: Water decomposed into its primitive elements, and decom posed doubtless by electricity, which will then have become a powerful and manageable force. • • . Yes, my friends, I believe that water will one day be employed as fuel, that hydrogen and oxygen, which constitute it, used singly or together, will furnish an inexhaustible source of heat and light of an intensity, of which coal is not capable •. •. I believe, then, that when the deposits of coal are exhausted, we shall heat and warm ourselves with water. Water will be the coal of the future.

Download or read book Modular High-temperature Gas-cooled Reactor Power Plant written by Kurt Kugeler and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-10-05 with total page 893 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Modular High-temperature Gas-cooled Reactor Power Plant" introduces the power plants driven by modular high temperature gas-cooled reactors (HTR), which are characterized by their inherent safety features and high output temperatures. HTRs have the potential to be adopted near demand side to supply both electricity and process heat, directly replacing conventional fossil fuels. The world is confronted with two dilemmas in the energy sector, namely climate change and energy supply security. HTRs have the potential to significantly alleviate these concerns. This book will provide readers with a thorough understanding of HTRs, their history, principles, and fields of application. The book is intended for researchers and engineers involved with nuclear engineering and energy technology.

Book Synopsis The NBS Alloy Data Center by : Gesina C. Carter
Download or read book The NBS Alloy Data Center written by Gesina C. Carter and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Alloy Data Center, part of the National Standard Reference Data System, has two primary functions. One is to stimulate cooperation and coordination among the existing data centers in the area of the physical properties of well characterized alloys. The final data generated by these centers for publication should be consistent with one another where correlation or possible overlap exists. The other purpose is the collection (from publications as well as private communications), evaluation, and publication of data in some areas where special competence exists in the Alloy Physics Section. Of interest to the center are metals, semimetals, intermetallic compounds, and alloys. Excluded are those materials which have ill-defined constitutions and heat treatments. An automated system was developed to meet the bibliographic needs of the center. This system will be described as well as the specific properties of interest. The system presently contains a complete annotated file dealing with NMR Knight shift measurements. The soft X-ray spectroscopy compilation is being kept up-to-date with the same system. (Author).

Book Synopsis Nuclear Power Safety by : James H. Rust
Download or read book Nuclear Power Safety written by James H. Rust and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A concise and current treatment of the subject of nuclear power safety, this work addresses itself to such issues of public concern as: radioactivity in routine effluents and its effect on human health and the environment, serious reactor accidents and their consequences, transportation accidents involving radioactive waste, the disposal of radioactive waste, particularly high-level wastes, and the possible theft of special nuclear materials and their fabrication into a weapon by terrorists. The implementation of the defense-in-depth concept of nuclear power safety is also discussed. Of interest to all undergraduate and graduate students of nuclear engineering, this work assumes a basic understanding of scientific and engineering principles and some familiarity with nuclear power reactors
