Book excerpt: Removal of hydrogen sulfide contained in hot coal gases produced from integrated gasification combined cycle power generation systems is required to protect downstream combustion turbines from being corroded with sulfur compounds. Removal of sulfur compounds from hot coal gas products is investigated by using various metal oxide sorbents and membrane separation methods. The main requirements of these metal oxide sorbents are durability and high sulfur loading capacity during absorption-regeneration cycles. In this research, durable metal oxide sorbents were formulated. Reactivity of the formulated metal oxide sorbents with simulated coal gas mixtures was examined to search for an ideal sorbent formulation with a high-sulfur loading capacity suitable for removal of hydrogen sulfide from coal gases. The main objectives of this research are to formulate durable metal oxide sorbents with high-sulfur loading capacity by a physical mixing method, to investigate reaction kinetics on the removal of sulfur compounds from coal gases at high temperature and pressure, to study reaction kinetics on the regeneration of sulfided sorbents, to identify effects of hydrogen partial pressures and moisture on equilibrium/dynamic absorption of hydrogen sulfide into formulated metal oxide sorbents as well as initial reaction rates of H2S with formulated metal oxide sorbents, and to evaluate intraparticular diffusivity of H2S into formulated sorbents at various reaction conditions. The metal oxide sorbents such as TU-1, TU-19, TU-24, TU-25 and TU-28 were formulated with zinc oxide powder as an active sorbent ingredient, bentonite as a binding material and titanium oxide as a supporting metal oxide.

Book excerpt: Hot-gas desulfurization for the integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) process has been investigated by many researchers to remove effectively hydrogen sulfide with various metal oxide sorbents at high pressures and high temperatures. Metal oxides such as zinc titanate oxides, zinc ferrite oxide, copper oxide, manganese oxide and calcium oxide, were found to be promising sorbents in comparison with other removal methods such as membrane separations and reactive membrane separations. Some metal oxide sorbents exhibited the quite favorable performance in terms of attrition resistance and sulfur capacity. Removal reaction of H2S from coal gas mixtures with promising sorbents of fine solid was carried on in a batch reactor. The objectives of this research project are to formulate promising durable metal oxide sorbents for the removal of sulfur compounds from coal gas mixtures, to find intrinsic initial reaction kinetics for a sorbent-hydrogen sulfide heterogeneous reaction system, to obtain effects of concentrations of coal gas components such as hydrogen and moisture on equilibrium absorption as well as dynamic absorption of hydrogen sulfide into formulated sorbents for the reaction system at various reaction temperatures and pressures, and to obtain effects of concentrations of coal gas components such as hydrogen and moisture on reaction rates of hydrogen sulfide with formulated sorbents at various reaction temperatures and pressures.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT REMOVAL OF HYDROGEN SULFIDE BY REGENERABLE METAL OXIDE SORBENTS Karayýlan, Dilek M.S., Department of Chemical Engineering Supervisor : Prof. Dr. Timur Doðu Co-Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Gülþen Doðu June 2004, 166 pages High-temperature desulfurization of coal-derived fuel gases is an essential process in advanced power generation technologies. It may be accomplished by using metal oxide sorbents. Among the sorbents investigated CuO sorbent has received considerable attention. However, CuO in uncombined form is readily reduced to copper by the H2 and CO contained in fuel gases which lowers the desulfurization efficiency. To improve the performance of CuO-based sorbents, they have been combined with other metal oxides, forming metal oxide sorbents. Sulfidation experiments were carried out at 627 oC using a gas mixture composed of 1 % H2S and 10 % H2 in helium. Sorbent regeneration was carried out in the same reactor on sulfided samples at 700 oC using 6 % O2 in N2. Total flow rate of gas mixture was kept at 100 ml/min in most of the experiments. In this study, Cu-Mn-O, Cu-Mn-V-O and Cu-V-O sorbents were developed by using complexation method. Performance of prepared sorbents were investigated in a fixed-bed quartz microreactor over six sulfidation/regeneration cycles. During six cycles, sulfur retention capacity of Cu-Mn-O decreased slightly from 0.152 to 0.128 (g S)/(g of Sorbent) while some decrease from 0.110 to 0.054 (g S)/(g of Sorbent) was observed with Cu-Mn-V-O. Cu-V-O showed a very good performance in the first sulfidation and excessive thermal sintering in the first regeneration prevented further testing. Sulfur retention capacity of Cu-V-O was calculated as 0.123 (g S)/(g of Sorbent) at the end of the first sulfidation. In addition, SO2 formation in sulfidation experiments was observed only with Cu-V-O sorbent.

Book excerpt: Research activities and efforts of this research project were concentrated on formulating various metal oxide sorbents with various additives under various formulation conditions, conducting experiments on initial reactivity of formulated sorbents with hydrogen sulfide, and testing hardness of formulated sorbents. Experiments on reactivity of formulated metal oxide sorbents with wet hydrogen sulfide contained in a simulated coal gas mixture were carried out for 120 seconds at 550 o C (see Table 1) to evaluate reactivity of formulated sorbents with hydrogen sulfide. Hardness of formulated sorbents was evaluated in addition to testing their reactivity with hydrogen sulfide. A typical simulated coal gas mixture consists of 9107-ppm hydrogen sulfide (0.005 g; 1 wt %), 0.085-g water (15.84 wt %), 0.0029-g hydrogen (0.58 wt %), and 0.4046-g nitrogen (81.34 wt%).

Book excerpt: Hot-gas desulfurization for the integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) process has been investigated by many researchers to remove effectively hydrogen sulfide with various metal oxide sorbents at elevated temperatures. Various metal oxide sorbents are formulated with metal oxides such as Fe, Co, Zn, and Ti. Initial reaction kinetics of formulated sorbents with hydrogen sulfide is studied in the presence of various amounts of moisture and hydrogen at various reaction temperatures. The objectives of this research are to study initial reaction kinetics for a sorbent-hydrogen sulfide heterogeneous reaction system, to investigate effects of concentrations of hydrogen sulfide, hydrogen, and moisture on dynamic absorption of H2S into sorbents, to understand effects of space time of reaction gas mixtures on initial reaction kinetics of the sorbent-hydrogen sulfide system, and to evaluate effects of temperature and sorbent amounts on dynamic absorption of H2S into sorbents. Experimental data on initial reaction kinetics of hydrogen sulfide with metal oxide sorbents were obtained with a 0.83-cm3 differential reactor. The reactivity of MCRH-67 sorbent and AHI-1 was examined. These sorbents were obtained from the Research Triangle Institute (RTI). The sorbents in the form of 70 [mu]m particles are reacted with 1,000--4,000 ppm hydrogen sulfide at 450--600 C. The range of space time of reaction gas mixtures is 0.03--0.09 s. The range of reaction duration is 4--14,400 s.
