Book excerpt: Reactivities of chars are maximized by keeping heat treatment temperatures as low as possible, minimizing soak time at maximum HTT and maximizing heating rates. It is feasible to use reactivity parameters as a tool for the study of thermal history of carbonaceous materials. Maximum HTT as well as the heating rate used for char preparation seem to be more important parameters in influencing char reactivity than the atmosphere used during preparation. Aging of chars in air following heat treatment at 800°C has little or no effect on subsequent char reactivity. The most significant conclusion of this investigation is that rapid heating results in significant increase in char reactivity to air. Surface areas of rapidly heated samples are significantly higher than those prepared at the same temperature using slower heating rates.

Book excerpt: During the last decade there has been a renewed interest in under standing from a fundamental point of view the gasification of carbon. Basi cally there are two major issues in controlling the reactivity of carbon: i) reduction of the gasification rate of carbon materials in hostile environment ii) increase of the gasification rate in order to utilize carbonaceous compounds more effectively. Although these two objectives look somewhat contradictory, they are part of the general topics of understanding gasification reactivity of carbon. Refractory applications of carbon in furnace linings, seals and vanes, as well as the use of carbon-carbon or carbon-ceramic composites in struc tures able to withstand corrosion at high temperature require a better understanding of the fundamentals involved in carbon-oxidizing gas (02' CO , H 0) reactions. Furthermore a great interest of aluminium producers 2 2 is 10 extending the lifetime of carbon electrodes in alumina electrolysis which primarily depends on reducing their consumption rates by air or carbon dioxide. Proper control of gasification reactions is also of prime importance in manufacturing carbonaceous adsorbents like granular activated carbon clothes of high adsorption characteristics. The balance between increase of porosity and decrease in mechanical strength during activation is critical for developing new porous types of carbon materials in particular for carbon clothes and this can only be achieved by a careful control of the gasification reaction.

Book excerpt: Reactivities of seventeen 40 x 100 mesh US coals charred to 1000°C have been measured at 910°C in 0.1 MPa of a N2-H2O mixture containing water vapor at a partial pressure of 2.27 kPa. Char reactivity decreases, in general, with increasing rank of the parent coal. The chars show a 250-fold difference in their reactivities. Results suggest that gasification of chars in air, CO2 and steam involves essentially the same mechanism and that relative gasification rates are controlled by the same intermediate oxygen-transfer step. Removal of inorganic matter from raw coals prior to their charring or from chars produced from raw coals decreases the reactivities of lower rank chars whereas reactivities of higher rank chars increase. Addition of H2 to steam has a marked retarding effect on char reactivity in most cases. However, in a few cases H2 acts as an accelerator for gasification. The effect of particle size, reaction temperature and water vapor pressure on char reactivity is considered.

Book excerpt: Our reactors have been reassembled at their new locations and the shakedown procedure was carried out successfully. The reactors are again fully operational and a series of experiments is already under way to continue our study on the effect of particle size on char combustion. Our main effort was focused on the mathematical modeling of char combustion. Computer simulations were carried out using our new three-dimensional model that allows us to study how char reactivities are affected by diffusional limitations in the micropores. We used again computational grids modeling three Illinois {number_sign}6 chars produced under nitrogen at heating rates of 0.1, 1 and 10 °C/s. Simulation results showed that diffusional limitations in the micropores have a significant effect on char reactivity and that the degree of micropore utilization is a strong function of conversion. We have also carried out simulations to investigate the role of inert ash inclusions and to determine how such inclusions affect the reactivity of chars.

Book excerpt: Combustion of Pulverised Coal in a Mixture of Oxygen and Recycled Flue Gas focuses on a niche technology, combustion of coal in an oxygen rich environment, which is one approach to obtaining 'clean coal,' by making it easier to capture carbon that is released in the combustion process. Toporov's book breaks ground on covering the key fundamentals of oxycoal technologies, which have not yet been covered in this depth. Combustion of Pulverised Coal in a Mixture of Oxygen and Recycled Flue Gas summarizes the main results from a pioneering work on experimental and numerical investigations of oxyfuel technologies. It provides the theoretical background of the process, the problems to be faced, and the technical solutions that were achieved during these investigations. - Summarizes results from investigations of oxyfuel technologies performed at Aachen University, Germany - Provides theoretical background, as well as the primary problems of these technologies and how they can be solved

Book excerpt: Analytical Methods for Coal and Coal Products, Volume II, aims to provide a detailed presentation of what constitutes the first comprehensive reference work devoted exclusively to the subject of analytical methodology for coal and coal products. The various chapters have been arranged according to either a specific coal process or a specific coal use problem. The topics discussed include the structure of coal and coal products, minerals in coal, coal carbonization products, and coal combustion products. The general philosophy of this work is to strike a balance between sophisticated analyses based on expensive instrumentation such as mass or nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometers, and the more common, less expensive equipment typically employed in the standard methods. Likewise there is an attempt to strike a balance between the expertise available from within the United States and that found in other countries, offering a broader viewpoint. Altogether, a large number of cross references have been entered in these chapters to enable the reader to make maximum use of pertinent information in all of the chapters.
