Book excerpt: Electrochemistry plays a key role in a broad range of research and applied areas including the exploration of new inorganic and organic compounds, biochemical and biological systems, corrosion, energy applications involving fuel cells and solar cells, and nanoscale investigations. The Handbook of Electrochemistry serves as a source of electrochemical information, providing details of experimental considerations, representative calculations, and illustrations of the possibilities available in electrochemical experimentation. The book is divided into five parts: Fundamentals, Laboratory Practical, Techniques, Applications, and Data. The first section covers the fundamentals of electrochemistry which are essential for everyone working in the field, presenting an overview of electrochemical conventions, terminology, fundamental equations, and electrochemical cells, experiments, literature, textbooks, and specialized books. Part 2 focuses on the different laboratory aspects of electrochemistry which is followed by a review of the various electrochemical techniques ranging from classical experiments to scanning electrochemical microscopy, electrogenerated chemiluminesence and spectroelectrochemistry. Applications of electrochemistry include electrode kinetic determinations, unique aspects of metal deposition, and electrochemistry in small places and at novel interfaces and these are detailed in Part 4. The remaining three chapters provide useful electrochemical data and information involving electrode potentials, diffusion coefficients, and methods used in measuring liquid junction potentials. * serves as a source of electrochemical information * includes useful electrochemical data and information involving electrode potentials, diffusion coefficients, and methods used in measuring liquid junction potentials * reviews electrochemical techniques (incl. scanning electrochemical microscopy, electrogenerated chemiluminesence and spectroelectrochemistry)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Chemistry of Electrode Processes discusses "electrodics" or the science dealing with the transfer of an electric charge between a solid and liquid phase. This book reviews the applications of electrodics, the history of electrochemistry, and the basic definitions and concepts of the galvanic cell. This text also deals with the rate expressions associated with the different types of electrode reaction mechanism including the passing of Faradaic current, the current-voltage curve, mass transport overpotential, and the influence of surface structure on electrode processes. This book describes the electrode-solution interphase at equilibrium, the properties of such interphase, and the ways it can influence electrode kinetics. Any electrode reaction involves several steps and can be influenced by diffusion, adsorption and other parameters. The techniques to study electrode reactions and the electrode-solution interphase consists of equilibrium measurements, steady state measurement, and transient measurement. This text also describes the significant and potential uses of electrodics in technology which need less expensive equipment compared to using spectrophotometric techniques. This book is suitable chemists, for advanced students in analytical chemistry, physics, thermodynamics, and related subjects.

Book excerpt: Electrochemistry of Biological Molecules presents a fairly complete summary of the electrochemistry of the more important groups of nitrogen heterocyclic molecules including purines and pyrimidines and their nucleosides and nucleotides, polynucleotides and nucleic acids, pteridines, flavins, pyrroles, porphyrins, and pyridines. Topics covered range from the theory and instrumentation of electrochemistry to various biological molecules, including pteridines, isoalloxazines, flavins, and flavin nucleotides. Comprised of nine chapters, this book begins with an overview of electrochemical techniques and their use to study biological materials, followed by a discussion on the theory and instrumentation of electrochemistry, with emphasis on their significance and utility as well aa their principles and circuits. Subsequent chapters explore nitrogen heterocyclic molecules such as purines and pyrimidines and their nucleosides and nucleotides, polynucleotides and nucleic acids, pteridines, flavins, pyrroles, porphyrins, and pyridines. The electrochemistry of biologically important pyridines is considered. This monograph should be of value to electrochemists, biochemists, and biologists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As our knowledge of the mechanism of electrode processes increases, it becomes more and more apparent that the kinetic currents first observed by R. Brdicka and by K. Wiesner in the 1940's are very widely encountered. Very many electrode pro cesses contain a chemical stage. * This is true primarily of elec trode processes that involve organic compounds. Therefore, to understand the mechanism of electrode processes and, particular ly, to correctly interpret the results of polarographic investiga tions, it is important to know the characteristics and relationships controlling the chemical reactions taking place at the electrode surface. Generally, these reactions are substantially different from ordinary chemical reactions taking place in the bulk of the solution, since the reactions at the electrodes are often affected by the electric field of the electrode and the adsorption of the par ticipating compounds . The fact that hydrogen ions usuallY take part in the electro chemical reduction of organic compounds makes possible the use of electrochemical methods, particularly polarography, for the study of protolytic reactions. These reactions play an important role in organic chemistry: the majority of reactions of organic compounds in solutions go through a stage in which a hydrogen ion is removed or added (see, for example, [1, 2]). Therefore, the polarographic study of protolytic reactions can supply much important information to theoretical organic chemistry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electrochemisty at Metal and Semiconductor Electrodes covers the structure of the electrical double layer and charge transfer reactions across the electrode/electrolyte interface. The purpose of the book is to integrate modern electrochemistry and semiconductor physics, thereby, providing a quantitative basis for understanding electrochemistry at metal and semiconductor electrodes. Electrons and ions are the principal particles which play the main role in electrochemistry. This text, therefore, emphasizes the energy level concepts of electrons and ions rather than the phenomenological thermodynamic and kinetic concepts on which most of the classical electrochemistry texts are based. This rationalization of the phenomenological concepts in terms of the physics of semiconductors should enable readers to develop more atomistic and quantitative insights into processes that occur at electrodes. The book incorporates many traditional disciplines of science and engineering such as interfacial chemistry, biochemistry, enzyme chemistry, membrane chemistry, metallurgy, modification of solid interfaces, and materials' corrosion. The text is intended to serve as an introduction for the study of advanced electrochemistry at electrodes and is aimed towards graduates and senior undergraduates studying materials and interfacial chemistry or those beginning research work in the field of electrochemistry.

Book excerpt: Among the topics of interest to organic chemists today are the versatility and uniqueness of electrolysis procedures in organic synthesis, as well as the latest advances in methodology, including basic concepts for the design of electrolysis conditions and apparatus. The International Symposium on Electroorganic Synthesis met in Kurashiki, Japan, in September 1997 for lectures on all aspects of current research in the field. This volume comprising the papers from the symposium consists of two parts. Part I, Electrooxidation, includes papers on alcohols and phenols, olefins and aromatics, halogenation, polymers, and electrodes, among others. Included in Part II, Electroreduction, are papers on carbonyl compounds, halogen-containing compounds, reaction with EG bases, and metal complexes. The novel trends presented here will be of special interest to researchers and graduate students in electroorganic chemistry and are a valuable resource for all organic chemists.
