Book excerpt: Surface chemistry and surface diffusion play pivotal roles in semiconductor processing and must be understood as electronic device dimensions approach the submicron level. In this project, basic time-dependent processes on silicon surfaces were examined using laser induced thermal desorption (LITD) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. These techniques provided direct, quantitative measurements of surface coverage in real-time. Using LITD and FTIR techniques, emphasis was on a microscopic understanding of semiconductor surface reaction kinetics. (jes).

Book excerpt: Silicon containing laser induced desorption (LID) products such as SiOH and SiNH2 have been observed from Si(111)7x7 surfaces exposed to H2O and NH3. Assuming that the LID species were derived from surface reaction intermediates, these LID products were employed to examine the thermal stability of the SiOH and SiNh2 surface species. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) transmission spectroscopy was recently utilized to monitor the decomposition of SiOHand siNH2 surface species following the dissociative adsorption of H2O and HH3 on porous silicon surfaces. The FTIR results on porous silicon surfaces were in excellent agreement with the previous LID studies on Si(111)7x7. The correspondence between the FTIR and LID investigations indicated that silicon-containing LID products are derived from silicon surface reaction intermediates. (js).

Book excerpt: Since its inception in 1966, the series of numbered volumes known as Semiconductors and Semimetals has distinguished itself through the careful selection of well-known authors, editors, and contributors. The Willardson and Beer series, as it is widely known, has succeeded in producing numerous landmark volumes and chapters. Not only did many of these volumes make an impact at the time of their publication, but they continue to be well-cited years after their original release. Recently, Professor Eicke R. Weber of the University of California at Berkeley joined as a co-editor of the series. Professor Weber, a well-known expert in the field of semiconductor materials, will further contribute to continuing the series' tradition of publishing timely, highly relevant, and long-impacting volumes. Some of the recent volumes, such as Hydrogen in Semiconductors, Imperfections in III/V Materials, Epitaxial Microstructures, High-Speed Heterostructure Devices, Oxygen in Silicon, and others promise that this tradition will be maintained and even expanded.

This book provides a broad coverage of the silicon-based materials including different kinds of silicon-related materials, their processing, spectroscopic characterization, physical properties, and device applications. This two-volume set offers a selection of timely topics on silicon materials namely those that have been extensively used for applications in electronic and photonic technologies. The extensive reference provides broad coverage of silicon-based materials, including different types of silicon-related materials, their processing, spectroscopic characterization, physical properties, and device applications. Fourteen chapters review the state of the art research on silicon-based materials and their applications to devices. This reference contains a subset of articles published in AP's recently released Handbook of Advanced Electronic and Photonic Materials and Devices ( 2000, ISBN 012-5137451, ten volumes) by Dr. Hari Nalwa. This two-volume work strives to present a highly coherent coverage of silicon-based material uses in the vastly dynamic arena of silicon chip research and technology. Key Features * Covers silicon-based materials and devices * Include types of materials, their processing, fabrication, physical properties and device applications * Role of silicon-based materials in electronic and photonic technology * A very special topic presented in a timely manner and in a format

Book excerpt: In spite of its high cost and technical importance, plasma equipment is still largely designed empirically, with little help from computer simulation. Plasma process control is rudimentary. Optimization of plasma reactor operation, including adjustments to deal with increasingly stringent controls on plant emissions, is performed predominantly by trial and error. There is now a strong and growing economic incentive to improve on the traditional methods of plasma reactor and process design, optimization, and control. An obvious strategy for both chip manufacturers and plasma equipment suppliers is to employ large-scale modeling and simulation. The major roadblock to further development of this promising strategy is the lack of a database for the many physical and chemical processes that occur in the plasma. The data that are currently available are often scattered throughout the scientific literature, and assessments of their reliability are usually unavailable. Database Needs for Modeling and Simulation of Plasma Processing identifies strategies to add data to the existing database, to improve access to the database, and to assess the reliability of the available data. In addition to identifying the most important needs, this report assesses the experimental and theoretical/computational techniques that can be used, or must be developed, in order to begin to satisfy these needs.

Book excerpt: Cities and Their Vital Systems asks basic questions about the longevity, utility, and nature of urban infrastructures; analyzes how they grow, interact, and change; and asks how, when, and at what cost they should be replaced. Among the topics discussed are problems arising from increasing air travel and airport congestion; the adequacy of water supplies and waste treatment; the impact of new technologies on construction; urban real estate values; and the field of "telematics," the combination of computers and telecommunications that makes money machines and national newspapers possible.
