The use of integration and seamless teaching throughout multiple content is becoming increasingly more apparent within the classroom. This study looks at the use of integration of the arts and Social Studies through the use of cooperative learning groups which help students achieve cognitive engagement and a deeper understanding of content. The researcher observed a third grade teacher deliver a lesson to a group of third grade students. After the lesson the students were to work as individuals or within a cooperative learning group. The researcher then interviewed the students about their experience either working independently or with their peers in a cooperative learning group. The data suggested that the use of cooperative learning groups has a positive effect on student learning and mastery of specific learning targets.

Book excerpt: The traditional classroom is seeing a slow transformation as integration of subjects across curriculum is paving the way for a balanced education for students. However, high stakes testing and content standards can funnel down learning for students into a narrow one-size-fits-all method of learning. This study looks at the meaning of achievement and the various methods in reaching the objective of a lesson plan. Both cognitive and non-cognitive engagement serve as indicators of a student's achievement and understanding of the curriculum. Cooperative learning groups are fast becoming a tool used in enhancing the engagement of students while allowing them to work collaboratively rather than independently.

Book excerpt: This bulletin provides a context for and an overview of cooperative learning addressing concerns and answering questions teachers, supervisors, and parents may have about this group approach to teaching and learning in the social studies. The intention was to help social studies educators construct a sound conceptual foundation for cooperative learning while eliminating misconceptions. Nine chapters detail building an adequate introductory conceptual framework for envisioning cooperative learning as a viable alternative approach to teaching in the social studies classroom. The first chapter introduces the concept, philosophy, and practice of cooperative learning. The second chapter focuses on the classroom environment and classroom characteristics with and without cooperative learning groups. Chapters 3 and 4 contain reviews of the literature that address effects of cooperative learning in classroom settings. Chapter 5, 6, and 7 focus on classroom teachers. In these three chapters teachers from first grade through secondary school discuss how cooperative learning has worked in their classrooms. They provide a unique perspective on how one can make the transition from using traditional teaching methods to becoming a successful user of cooperative learning. Practical ideas about how to implement cooperative learning in social studies classrooms are included, as well as some historical context for group learning. The final chapter features a dialogue of a group of teachers who are training to use cooperative learning. A position statement on ability grouping is included. (DK)

Book excerpt: The Common Core Standards have recently been adopted in most states across the nation and teachers are in the process of getting to the core of these standards. Teaching to standards is not a new concept; teachers have adapted to new standards every few years for quite some time. And teachers are adaptable, as can be seen in this book. We are writing this book to demonstrate how teachers use research-based strategies to meet Common Core Standards while still focusing on students. Our goal is to help teachers visualize students in action as other teachers describe the implementation of research-based strategies in their own classrooms, show student work samples, and provide reflections of student success in achieving the standards. Many Common Core Standards books focus on the standards, but our approach focuses on strategies that engage the students in the classroom--showing how different teachers at varying grade levels have used the strategies to meet the standards. With this focus, we believe that teachers gain a new and positive perspective on approaching the new standards and see the flexibility of strategies for meeting standards across subject areas. We have examined research on the strategies with the purpose of giving teachers a brief description of why these strategies work before giving actual examples from classrooms. We also work closely with teachers in the public schools and have our finger on the pulse of what is happening in the public schools—one of the current stressors being unpacking the Common Core Standards This book actually focuses on practice. We begin by laying out a rationale in our first chapter---The Core Value(s) of Education. Then, each chapter focuses on a strategy, including 1) a brief description about the research supporting each strategy and 2) several examples from different grade levels, which include a description of how the strategy was used, student work samples, and a reflection on the use of the strategy. The research descriptions are fairly short because, while we believe professional educators (aka teachers, in this case) should know the research that supports practice, we know they are not typically interested in long diatribes about the research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For social studies teachers reeling from the buffeting of top-down educational reforms, this volume offers answers to questions about dealing with the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). Each chapter presents and reviews pertinent standards that relate to the social studies. Each chapter also deals with significant topics in the social studies from various social sciences to processes such as inquiry to key skills needed for success in social studies such as analysis and literacy. The most important aspect of these chapters though is the array of adaptable activities that is included in each chapter. Teachers can find practical approaches to dealing with CCSS across the social studies panorama. The multiple authorships of the various chapters mean a variety of perspectives and viewpoints are presented. All of the authors have fought in the trenches of K-12 public education. Their activities reflect this in a way that will be useful to novice or veteran teachers.
