Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors have worked on a wide variety of development projects across Canada and in over 40 other countries in the Americas, Europe, Asia and Africa. This experience has identified in Canada some serious problems with the political structure of this 150 year old nation and has generated ideas that would improve Canada as it moves into its next 50 years. The major problem seems to be a “Fiefdom Mentality” hangover from North America’s Colonial past. The authors have concentrated on currently available facts and realize that some of their ideas may be controversial in many parts of the country. This document follows the typical format of many engineering reports as outlined below: · Introduction · Definition of the Problem · Historical Background · Review of Similar Situations in Other Countries · Existing Relevant Data. · The Role of the Civil Engineer in Development. · Extensive Natural Resources · Possible Solutions to Problems. · Six Regions plus Canadian Capital Territory (CCT) · Canadian Utility Corridor (CUC) · Much Work – Big Future! · Summary Re-engineering Canada is not a project for older Professionals sitting philosophically in comfortable think-tank offices. It must be developed, adopted and driven by a younger generation that wants to see the benefits available for their children in the future when Canada in 2067 will be celebrating its 200th birthday. There are some signs that this change has already started with recent proposals to reduce inter-Provincial trade and professional barriers. However there is much more that needs to be done to change Canada into a dynamic united country with an expanding and vibrant economy. However the May 2017 Provincial Election in British Columbia raises alarm bells where a possible coalition Government wants to stop the construction of an oil pipeline plus the development of a hydroelectric project that will produce thousands of megawatts of “green” electric power. This type of politics demonstrates a lack of clear thinking and little regard for the Canadian environment or economy. This document proposes radical changes that could significantly improve the lives of Canada’s citizens. It would be the authors’ objectives that, as the country celebrates its 200th anniversary, that the “Colonial Fiefdom” mentality would have been totally eliminated. A Canadian citizen’s first loyalty is to the Country and only then to the Province.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every day, new warnings emerge about artificial intelligence rebelling against us. All the while, a more immediate dilemma flies under the radar. Have forces been unleashed that are thrusting humanity down an ill-advised path, one that's increasingly making us behave like simple machines? In this wide-reaching, interdisciplinary book, Brett Frischmann and Evan Selinger examine what's happening to our lives as society embraces big data, predictive analytics, and smart environments. They explain how the goal of designing programmable worlds goes hand in hand with engineering predictable and programmable people. Detailing new frameworks, provocative case studies, and mind-blowing thought experiments, Frischmann and Selinger reveal hidden connections between fitness trackers, electronic contracts, social media platforms, robotic companions, fake news, autonomous cars, and more. This powerful analysis should be read by anyone interested in understanding exactly how technology threatens the future of our society, and what we can do now to build something better.

Book excerpt: The Reengineering Revolution reviews the significance of the Business Process Reengineering trend for management practice since the early 1990′s. Combining empirical and theoretical perspectives, David Knights and Hugh Willmott show how both term and practice shaped the recent widely adopted policies of `downsizing′, restructuring and emphasis on `process′ rather than task. Well-known contributors analyze the impact of Business Process Reengineering in a number of settings: supermarkets and the food chain; the public sector; banks. The theoretical history of Business Process Reengineering is also detailed in relation to ideas about bureaucracy, hierarchy, transformation and design.

Book excerpt: Businesses must constantly adapt to a dynamically changing environment that requires choosing an adaptive and dynamic information architecture that has the flexibility to support both changes in the business environment and changes in technology. In general, information systems reengineering has the objective of extracting the contents, data structures, and flow of data and process contained within existing legacy systems in order to reconstitute them into a new form for subsequent implementation. Information Systems Reengineering for Modern Business Systems: ERP, Supply Chain and E-Commerce Management Solutions covers different techniques that could be used in industry in order to reengineer business processes and legacy systems into more flexible systems capable of supporting modern trends such as Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), supply chain management systems and e-commerce. This reference book also covers other issues related to the reengineering of legacy systems, which include risk management and obsolescence management of requirements.
