Mindlin by his former students. This book contains the development of specific areas of Mechanics of Solids to which Mindlin has contributed most. Organized into eight chapters, this text first discusses the past, present and likely future of photoelasticity. Subsequent chapters explore the development of the three-dimensional theory of elasticity; generalized elastic continua; bodies in contact with applications to granular media; and waves and vibrations in isotropic and anisotropic plates. Other chapters discuss the vibrations and wave propagation in rods, piezoelectric crystals, and electro-elasticity. Lastly, the lattice theories and continuum mechanics are described.

Download or read book Mechanics of Composite Materials written by J.N. Reddy and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-18 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyone involved with the mechanics of composite materials and structures must have come across the works of Dr. N.J. Pagano in their research. His research papers are among the most referenced of all existing literature in the field of mechanics of composite materials. This monograph makes available, in one volume, all Dr. Pagano's major technical papers. Most of the papers included in this volume have been published in the open literature, but there are a few exceptions -- a few key, unpublished reports have been included for continuity. The topics are: some basic studies of anisotropic behavior, exact solutions for elastic response, role of micromechanics, and some carbon--carbon spinoffs. The volume can be used as a reference book by researchers in academia, industry, and government laboratories, and it can be used as a reference text for a graduate course on the mechanics of composite materials.

Book Synopsis An Introduction to the Mathematical Theory of Vibrations of Elastic Plates by : Raymond David Mindlin
Download or read book An Introduction to the Mathematical Theory of Vibrations of Elastic Plates written by Raymond David Mindlin and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2006 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book by the late R D Mindlin is destined to become a classic introduction to the mathematical aspects of two-dimensional theories of elastic plates. It systematically derives the two-dimensional theories of anisotropic elastic plates from the variational formulation of the three-dimensional theory of elasticity by power series expansions. The uniqueness of two-dimensional problems is also examined from the variational viewpoint. The accuracy of the two-dimensional equations is judged by comparing the dispersion relations of the waves that the two-dimensional theories can describe with prediction from the three-dimensional theory. Discussing mainly high-frequency dynamic problems, it is also useful in traditional applications in structural engineering as well as provides the theoretical foundation for acoustic wave devices. Sample Chapter(s). Chapter 1: Elements of the Linear Theory of Elasticity (416 KB). Contents: Elements of the Linear Theory of Elasticity; Solutions of the Three-Dimensional Equations; Infinite Power Series of Two-Dimensional Equations; Zero-Order Approximation; First-Order Approximation; Intermediate Approximations. Readership: Researchers in mechanics, civil and mechanical engineering and applied mathematics.
Download or read book Rotating Shell Dynamics written by Hua Li and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2005-01-19 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are numerous engineering applications for high-speed rotating structures which rotate about their symmetric axes. For example, free-flight sub-munition projectiles rotate at high speeds in order to achieve an aerodynamically-stable flight. This is the first book of its kind to provide a comprehensive and systematic description of rotating shell dynamics. It not only provides the basic derivation of the dynamic governing equations for rotating shells, but documents benchmark results for free vibration, critical speed and parametric resonance. It is written in a simple and clear manner making it accessible both the expert and graduate student. The first monograph to provide a detailed description of rotating shell dynamics Dynamic problems such as free vibration and dynamic stability are examined in detail, for basic shells of revolutions
Book Synopsis The Mechanics Of Piezoelectric Structures by : Jiashi Yang
Download or read book The Mechanics Of Piezoelectric Structures written by Jiashi Yang and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2006-03-20 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A continuation of the author's previous book “An Introduction to the Theory of Piezoelectricity” (Springer, New York, 2005) on the three-dimensional theory of piezoelectricity, this volume covers lower dimensional theories for various piezoelectric structures and device applications. The development of two-, one- and zero-dimensional theories for high frequency vibrations of piezoelectric plates, shells, beams, rings curved bars and parallelepipeds is systematically presented. In addition to linear piezoelectricity, certain nonlinear effects are also considered and examples for device applications are provided. The material emphasizes dynamic theories and high frequency motions as well as device applications as there are relatively few books on piezoelectric structures, especially for high frequency theories. The volume is destined to be one of the most systematic and comprehensive books on piezoelectric structures.
Book Synopsis Multiscale Modeling of Complex Materials by : Tomasz Sadowski
Download or read book Multiscale Modeling of Complex Materials written by Tomasz Sadowski and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-10-14 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers in this volume deal with materials science, theoretical mechanics and experimental and computational techniques at multiple scales, providing a sound base and a framework for many applications which are hitherto treated in a phenomenological sense. The basic principles are formulated of multiscale modeling strategies towards modern complex multiphase materials subjected to various types of mechanical, thermal loadings and environmental effects. The focus is on problems where mechanics is highly coupled with other concurrent physical phenomena. Attention is also focused on the historical origins of multiscale modeling and foundations of continuum mechanics currently adopted to model non-classical continua with substructure, for which internal length scales play a crucial role.
Book Synopsis Vibrations of Elastic Plates by : Yi-Yuan Yu
Download or read book Vibrations of Elastic Plates written by Yi-Yuan Yu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on my experiences as a teacher and as a researcher for more than four decades. When I started teaching in the early 1950s, I became interested in the vibrations of plates and shells. Soon after I joined the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn as a professor, I began working busily on my research in vibrations of sandwich and layered plates and shells, and then teaching a graduate course on the same subject. Although I tried to put together my lecture notes into a book, I never finished it. Many years later, I came to the New Jersey Institute of Technology as the dean of engineering. When I went back to teaching and looked for some research areas to work on, I came upon laminated composites and piezoelectric layers, which appeared to be natural extensions of sandwiches. Working on these for the last several years has brought me a great deal of joy, since I still am able to find my work relevant. At least I can claim that I still am pursuing life-long learning as it is advocated by educators all over the country. This book is based on the research results I accumulated during these two periods of my work, the first on vibrations and dynamical model ing of sandwiches, and the second on laminated composites and piezoelec tric layers.
