Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a recent surge in the use of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) within education globally, with disproportionate claims being made about what they show, ‘what works’, and what constitutes the best ‘evidence’. Drawing on up-to-date scholarship from across the world, Taming Randomized Controlled Trials in Education critically addresses the increased use of RCTs in education, exploring their benefits, limits and cautions, and ultimately questioning the prominence given to them. While acknowledging that randomized controlled trials do have some place in education, the book nevertheless argues that this place should be limited. Drawing together all arguments for and against RCTs in a comprehensive and easily accessible single volume, the book also adds new perspectives and insights to the conversation; crucially, the book considers the limits of their usefulness and applicability in education, raising a range of largely unexplored concerns about their use. Chapters include discussions on: The impact of complexity theory and chaos theory. Design issues and sampling in randomized controlled trials. Learning from clinical trials. Data analysis in randomized controlled trials. Reporting, evaluating and generalizing from randomized controlled trials. Considering key issues in understanding and interrogating research evidence, this book is ideal reading for all students on Research Methods modules, as well as those interested in undertaking and reviewing research in the field of education.

Book excerpt: My dissertation examines the process of knowledge transfer (KT) from an effectiveness randomized controlled trial (RCT) into daily practice, specifically whether professional development, new program content, and teacher's characteristics influence teachers' uptake decisions. Teacher learning as experienced in the RCT and implementation as described through teacher interviews are used to explore practice choices. My research was situated within the context of an externally funded and registered randomized control trial (#NCT02456181) involving 212 elementary school teachers that examined the effectiveness of two contrasting math programs. Research data was derived from three sources: a baseline questionnaire and mathematics measure (n=198) probing teaching-efficacy and knowledge for mathematics, a one-year post RCT survey (n=98) of teachers' use of the mathematics programs from the RCT and semi-structured interviews (n=14) in which teachers reflected on participating in the study and mathematics instruction. During the RCT, the host school board was midway through implementing collaborative inquiry (CI) as part of a teacher professional iii learning initiative. This permitted for a comparison of contrasting teacher professional learning models. A phased mixed-method design was used for this thesis. Teachers' learning experiences from their RCT participation were compared with interview responses to identify similarities and differences related to their training and their daily practice. These findings were then used to explain the survey uptake results. Survey results revealed a noteworthy uptake of the novel mathematics program one year after the study: 31% of teachers reported using the program as a full replacement and 26% reported using it as a resource. Measures for teacher's mathematics knowledge (standardized math test) and teaching-efficacy for the program (self-reported questionnaire) suggested teacher competence and confidence for teaching new programs, irrespective of characteristics (e.g., education, experience, sex) or situational factors (e.g., grade level, pedagogical program). Interviewed teachers preferred experiential learning, accessing new math knowledge from peers, and autonomy in establishing pedagogical practices. The study results present teachers as capable learners of a new mathematics program, yet preferring to choose the content and approach to professional learning. These results support including teachers as equal partners in the development of any new math implementation strategies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes problems in the field of performance analysis, primarily the study of storage systems and the diverse mathematical techniques that are required for solving them. Topics covered include best practices for scheduling I/O requests to a disk drive, how this problem is related to airplane boarding, and how both problems can be modeled using space-time geometry. Also provided is an explanation of how Riemann's proof of the analytic continuation and functional equation of the Riemann zeta function can be used to analyze express line queues in a minimarket. Overall, the book displays the surprising relevance of abstract mathematics that is not usually associated with applied mathematics topics. Advanced undergraduate students or graduate students with an interest in the applications of mathematics will find this book to be a useful resource. It will also be of interest to professional mathematicians who want exposure to the surprising ways that theoretical mathematics may be applied to engineering problems. To encourage further study, each chapter ends with notes pointing to various related topics that the reader may want pursue. This mathematically rigorous work was noted in the news section of the journal Nature, and in popular media such as New Scientist, The Wall Street Journal, The Guardian, and USA Today.

Book excerpt: It is quite common in a randomized clinical trial (RCT) to encounter patients who do not comply with their assigned treatment. Since noncompliance often occurs non-randomly, the commonly-used approaches, including both the as-treated (AT) and as-protocol (AP) analysis, and the intent-to-treat (ITT) (or as-randomized) analysis, are all well known to possibly produce a biased inference of the treatment efficacy. This book provides a systematic and organized approach to analyzing data for RCTs with noncompliance under the most frequently-encountered situations. These include parallel sampling, stratified sampling, cluster sampling, parallel sampling with subsequent missing outcomes, and a series of dependent Bernoulli sampling for repeated measurements. The author provides a comprehensive approach by using contingency tables to illustrate the latent probability structure of observed data. Using real-life examples, computer-simulated data and exercises in each chapter, the book illustrates the underlying theory in an accessible, and easy to understand way. Key features: Consort-flow diagrams and numerical examples are used to illustrate the bias of commonly used approaches, such as, AT analysis, AP analysis and ITT analysis for a RCT with noncompliance. Real-life examples are used throughout the book to explain the practical usefulness of test procedures and estimators. Each chapter is self-contained, allowing the book to be used as a reference source. Includes SAS programs which can be easily modified in calculating the required sample size. Biostatisticians, clinicians, researchers and data analysts working in pharmaceutical industries will benefit from this book. This text can also be used as supplemental material for a course focusing on clinical statistics or experimental trials in epidemiology, psychology and sociology.

Book excerpt: Researchers measure the effectiveness of new interventions using randomized controlled trials (RCTs). They are increasingly using qualitative research with these RCTs to explain the results of RCTs or facilitate the viability and efficiency of RCTs. A Practical Guide to Using Qualitative Research with Randomized Controlled Trials is a "how-to" book about the use of qualitative research with RCTs. Divided into three parts, this book covers the process of using qualitative research with RCTs from start to finish. Section one outlines overarching issues such as the many contributions qualitative research can make to generating evidence of effectiveness, section two provides practical guidance from writing a proposal through to publishing qualitative research undertaken with RCTs, and the final section guides the reader on how to engage with relevant stakeholders. Each chapter focuses on the key steps of undertaking qualitative research in RCTs, giving examples of how to write a proposal, select research questions, integrate qualitative and quantitative components, and much more. A Practical Guide to Using Qualitative Research with Randomized Controlled Trials is ideal for researchers who are leading, undertaking, or planning to use qualitative research with RCTs. With its detailed explanations and inspiring examples, this book is also useful for postgraduate students wishing to conduct qualitative research in the context of an RCT.
