At the same time, the economic meltdown impaired the financial institutions all over the world but cooperative banks in most markets have performed reasonably well in comparison with other financial institutions. This is due to relatively straightforward operations of most cooperative banks, their ability to focus on member service as opposed to short-term profit maximization and the conservative nature of its executives and their regulators. The current status and the operational features of UCBs are dealt with in order to describe the future trends and potential difficulties and opportunities of urban cooperative banking sector.

Playing a vital role in dispensing credit in largely agricultural areas, they are also the weakest link in the formal credit delivery system. This book provides a valuable case study of the traditional banking system in this developing economy, exploring the reasons for the poor performance of credit cooperatives in India and suggesting measures to revitalise them. Although this sector has grown along with the micro-credit sector to provide finance for the poor and the less creditworthy borrowers, financing development still remains a major problem in the developing world. However, the financial health of credit cooperatives in India has been a matter of perennial concern. The author argues that cooperatives hold great promise for financial inclusion if the financial position of the cooperatives can be consolidated. Providing a detailed analysis of the historical evolution of cooperatives in India, the book establishes the link between different segments of this institutional system and their performance in a commercial sense to show that cooperatives occupy an important place in India’s financial edifice as they play a key role in the multi-agency framework for rural credit delivery. As such, the analysis provides a valuable reference for scholars of economics, Asian economics and finance.

To confirm this statement, due to mismanagement in some of the urban cooperative banks in the states of Maharashtra, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh, the public confidence in these banks has been adversely affected by failure of a few scheduled and unscheduled Urban Cooperative Banks (UCBs) during the years 2001 to 2004. However, these banks are now trying to regain public confidence and their deposits again have started showing improvement. Each bank needs to know its standing in the market so that it could formulate its business strategy. For this purpose, the bank also should be able to compare its performance with its peer group on on-going basis in an increasingly competitive and risky market place. Under such circumstances, only banks that perform well on all fronts will survive. The present study is an attempt to investigate intensively into the profitability performance of UCBs with reference to Tamil Nadu state using a RoE and RoA measure of overall profitability. Five UCBs in Tamil Nadu chosen as sample. This study covers a period of six years i.e. from 1998-99 to 2003-04. The study reveals that the sample banks shows satisfactory performance as regards RoE, RoA and NIM. The low percentage of establishment cost reflects the efficiency of the sample banks with regard to cost control. Though a spurt in the interest expenditure is evident, by curtailing the operating expenditure, banks were able to show higher net profit than before. The major income of the sample banks comes from lending operations and it is stable in all six years. It clearly indicates that the cooperative banks will able to face competition in the present business environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book emphasises the role of HRD policies in development of organisational and individual goals. Human resources are now- a-days considered as assets in all organisations. In the service sector like banking, human resources play a predominant role in successful delivery of the service. In the banking industry, the only sector adopting socialist pattern of economy is co-operative sector. This sector is wide since it includes co-operative banks, co-operative societies, multi purpose organizations, etc. In the urban and semi urban areas, the poor and needy people are served by urban co-operative banks with financial assistance without much hindrance. The performance of the urban co-operative banks depends on their profitability. But the profitability of these banks depends on the employees working in the organization. The efficiency of employees is influenced by the HRD policies. The HRD policies of the urban co-operative banks are generally determined by the management. In this process, neither management nor government realized the vital role of employees in developing these banks. Several committees were appointed by Central as well as State Governments to look into the problems of co-operatives and to give recommendations. But no committee has been appointed to study the problems of employees working in co-operatives. Therefore, the present study is conducted empirically to examine the HRD policies and practices in these banks. This book contains the introduction of basic concepts about co-operative movement and human resource development, profile of the area of the study, profile of the banks selected for study, the profile of the respondents, the HRD policies adopted in the co-operative sector, analysis of the perceptions of the employees on HRD policies in urban co-operative banks. Accordingly, the whole research study is presented in easily understandable manner and with constructive criticism. Thus, the research will prove to be useful to the researchers, Government officials, co-operative leaders and a guideline to the urban co-operative banks while framing HRD policies and to increase the employee competence.

Book excerpt: The agriculture industry plays a major role in the overall economic growth of the world. However, there is is limited discussion on the management of agricultural waste in the published literature. It could be related to the fact that agriculture industry is not regulated as the municipal solid waste (MSW) the MSW mainly governed by public entities such as municipalities and hence the generation and management data are collected, recorded, and analyzed in the public domain. Agriculture waste is predominantly handled by the owners of the agriculture land which is predominantly in the private sector, with little public involvement. According to the existing research, labor migration from rural to urban areas has negatively impacted production, which affects food security. Agriculture social services and mechanisms are considered very important for agricultural sustainability and food security. Book excerpt: Co-operative banks are an integral part of the Indian financial system. They comprise urban co-operative banks and rural co-operative credit institutions. Co-operative banks in India are more than 100 years old. Urban Co-operative Banks (UCBs) -- also referred to as primary co-operative banks -- play an important role in meeting the growing credit needs of urban and semi-urban areas of the country. UCBs mobilise savings from the middle and lower income groups and purvey credit to small borrowers, including weaker sections of the society. Scheduled UCBs are under closer regulatory and supervisory framework of the RBI. Rural co-operative banks operate mainly for the benefit of rural areas, particularly the agricultural sector. Though much smaller as compared to scheduled commercial banks, co-operative banks constitute an important segment of the Indian banking system. They have an extensive branch network and reach out to people in remote areas. They have traditionally played an important role in creating banking habits among the lower and middle-income groups and in strengthening the rural credit delivery system. This book -- focusing on UCBs -- provides a vivid account of the functioning of co-operative credit institutions in India including recent reforms. Besides, it includes a case study of the working of UCBs in the Indian state of West Bengal.

Book excerpt: Prologue: Indian economy is substantially supported by cooperative sector through 500,000 cooperatives, 230 million members, assets worth INR 1.5 billion and presence in every sector of economy. 20th century remained milestone for credit and banking cooperative in Gujarat state. At beginning of new millennium, 350 Urban Co-operative Banks (UCBs) held around 18 per cent (INR 170000 million) of the total bank deposits in Gujarat and advanced 6 per cent of the loans. Due to a major UCB scam, the year 2001 was turning point and misfortune for state cooperative banking that has eroded image of the sector. The deposit, depositors, loan and borrowers of UCBs in the state dropped substantially in subsequent years. 35 UCBs became virtually insolvent and vanished, 60 were declared weak by the Central Bank and 187 were threatened & vulnerable. Rajkot Nagarik Sahkari Bank (RNSB), a mid-sized cooperative bank with 220,000 members had deposit of INR 6000 million and loan base of INR 4000 million. It faced competition from private and foreign banks; reform process had snatched protection to the cooperative sector. In faint milieu and backdrop of lost faith on cooperative banking, during 2001-2007 RNSB maintained its growth on all major indicators. The research paper investigates reasons of growth under adverse conditions and test whether RNSB has maintained cooperative principles and value at the center? A cooperative bank is cooperative first and then bank. Cooperative Bank needs to remain profitable within cooperative framework. It has to carefully blend business expediency and cooperative values. Cooperative governance implies rules, tools and the concrete procedures through which cooperatives are managed. The governance must be consistent with the values, principles and the mission of credit cooperative, in order to allow for their correct implementation. RNSB management claims its aim to provide a WORLD-CLASS Banking facility to the local common people at economical rate & achieve healthy growth. Bank claims commitment to the highest level of ethical standards, professional integrity & regulatory compliances while philosophy of bank is based on three core values - Operational Excellence, Customer Focus and Upliftment through Co-Operation. This research paper critically analyzes success of a cooperative bank in institutional perspective. Objective: 1. To study and analyze critical financial & cooperative indicators of UCBs in Gujarat vis-¿-vis RNSB 2. To investigate reasons of growth for RNSB 3. To scrutinize governance of RNSB in light of Cooperative Principles & Values 4. To study whether Good Cooperative Governance is Good Business Practice Research Methodology: The research paper will review secondary data in form policy documents, annual reports, compilation of financial data of UCBs and available research papers. It will also collect & analyze primary data to draw conclusion using appropriate research tools. Recommendation: The suggestions may be useful to cooperatives in general and cooperative banking in special - how inbuilt institutional character of a cooperative can be used efficiently and effectively in competitive business environment, which help in withstanding environmental crisis. How sound business practices can be designed and implemented without compromising cooperative principles and values?
