As far as Jarek can tell, though, they must've been speaking Dutch or something, because those "meek" aliens sure did make a bloody mess of things. Even so, he wasn't about to make a fuss over the raknoth apocalypse. Not until those red-eyed bastards stole his exosuit. You don't steal a man's exosuit... But when Jarek's quest for vengeance runs him up against an alien stronghold and a blonde arcanist who throws around grown men like telekinetic frisbees, he soon learns there's far worse than missing exosuits to worry about. And if he and his fiery new friend don't put a stop to it, they may just be looking at Apocalypse Number Two... Don your power armor, grab your copy, and join Jarek and Rachel for a rip-roaring sci-fi thrill-ride today! Warning: This book contains big hearts, BIGGER swords, and a whole metric crap-ton of high-octane badassery. Also, swears. And snark. LOTS of snark. Read at your own risk.

Book excerpt: In this journey through time, archaeologist David Preston comes into possession of a baseball supposedly signed by the legendary Ty Cobb in 1908, thanks to Ariyl Moro and her mysterious companion, Jon Ludlo. Except the ball tests out to be an impossible paradox. It was signed with a ballpoint pen (not invented until 1938) using ink that's several centuries older. But then, Ariyl and Ludlo aren't who they claim to be either. Ariyl, a voluptuous 6-foot-3 beauty, turns out to be a tourist from a 22nd century paradise where time travel is the latest craze. Unbeknownst to her, however, her traveling companion, Ludlo, is a psychopath whose thefts are starting to alter history. In a world were even small changes in the timeline can cause catastrophic consequences, Ludlo's actions may completely destroy the future. To stop Ludlo, David and Ariyl must solve a mystery involving Bronze Age swordsmen, modern-day Nazis, a steampunk world, Albert Einstein, some highly skeptical Founding Fathers, and a Golden Age Hollywood where the murder of a beloved movie star will spell doom for civilization. Sci-fi meets romantic comedy with sword-swinging adventure!

Book excerpt: Marking the return of many characters from Gardens of the Moon and introducing a host of remarkable new players, Memories of Ice is both a momentous new chapter in Steven Erikson's magnificent epic fantasy and a triumph of storytelling. The ravaged continent of Genabackis has given birth to a terrifying new empire: the Pannion Domin. Like a tide of corrupted blood, it seethes across the land, devouring all. In its path stands an uneasy alliance: Onearm's army and Whiskeyjack's Bridgeburners alongside their enemies of old--the forces of the Warlord Caladan Brood, Anomander Rake and his Tiste Andii mages, and the Rhivi people of the plains. But ancient undead clans are also gathering; the T'lan Imass have risen. For it would seem something altogether darker and more malign threatens this world. Rumors abound that the Crippled God is now unchained and intent on a terrible revenge. At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is no ordinary opening book. This practical guide describes only such openings in which White or Black sacrifices material at an early stage of the game. They are called gambits (in Old Italian, gambetto means tripping). The justification for such sacrifices can differ quite a lot. In most cases, the side that sacrifices material tends to get ahead of the opponent in development and/or opens lines to attack the enemy king. However, there are also gambits aimed at the occupation of the center (Blumenfeld Gambit), depriving the opponent of castling (Cochrane Gambit or Traxler Variation), weakening the opponent’s pawn structure (Anti-Moscow Variation), luring an opponent’s piece to an unfavorable position (sacrificing the b2-pawn), obtaining a certain positional compensation (Volga Gambit), etc. Gambits are often associated with the romantic chess of the 19th century. Indeed, that was the heyday of such sharp openings as the King’s Gambit or Evans Gambit, but even nowadays, many games begin with one of the well-known or even innovative gambits. This should come as no surprise: gambits help to reveal the true essence of chess, “the triumph of spirit over matter.” The concept of this book is to examine practical games and give theoretical insights in the notes rather than in stand-alone articles. Practice has shown this to be the most effective way of mastering new material. More often than not, recent games by the world’s top players have been chosen as an illustration, played in the last few years in particular. However, the most important classic games are mentioned as well. The present book analyzes almost 50 of the major gambit lines and systems. Almost 140 games are given in full, with many game fragments selected to illustrate the important deviations. And there is a special section about types of sacrificial themes, such as sacrificing the b2-pawn, sacrificing on f7, etc. Readers who may wish to employ one of the examined gambit variations on a regular basis should, no doubt, study the specific books on that very opening, although in most cases the lines and ideas given are sufficient for a beginner or club player to include the system in his or her opening repertoire and give it a try.

And when it occurs, do you get the feeling that black has all the fun, whether he's pressuring your d-pawn, breaking down your pawn centre, rounding up your a-pawn or boring you to tears with the Rubinstein? - Then the Reti Gambit may be the solution for you too After having written two popular books on the King's Gambit for white (The King's Gambit for the Creative Aggressor in 1998 and The Fascinating King's Gambit in 2004/5) Thomas Johansson devotes his third chess opening book to a little known gambit that definitely spices up the French Defence I can't guarantee that white always gets an advantage in the RG - after all, even the theoretical main lines after 2.d4 tend to end up equal after about 20 moves - but the positions that arise are usually so interesting and fun that once you've learned how to play it, I think you will soon be looking forward to your next encounter with the French Defence
