Book excerpt: A literature survey was conducted to assess the state-of-the-art in rate dependent constitutive models for continuous fiber reinforced polymer matrix composite (PMC) materials. Several recent models which include formulations for describing plasticity, viscoelasticity, viscoplasticity, and rate-dependent phenomenon such as creep and stress relaxation are outlined and compared. When appropriate, these comparisons include brief descriptions of the mathematical formulations, the test procedures required for generating material constants, and details of available data comparing test results to analytical predictions. Book excerpt: "With the increasing application of fiber reinforced polymer matrix composites in the aerospace industry, a composite model that has the capability to capture the nonlinear, strain rate dependent deformation behavior of the materials is desired for finite element analysis. Polymers are believed to be the major contributors to the nonlinearity and rate dependence of the composites. In this study, the nonlinear, rate dependent constitutive polymer model developed by Goldberg has been modified to incorporate the rate dependence of the elastic modulus and a simple damage model is proposed to improve its unloading prediction. The polymer constitutive equations are then implemented within a strength of materials based micromechanics method in order to predict the nonlinear, strain rate dependent deformation of the composite. Strain rate dependent failure criteria and post failure progressive damage model are incorporated into the composite model. The polymer and the composite models are implemented into a commercially available explicit finite element code, LS-DYNA, as user defined materials (UMATs). The deformation behaviors of several representative polymers and two polymer matrix composites of various fiber configurations are simulated in LS-DYNA with the UMATs for a wide range of strain rates, and the numerical results agree well with the experimental data. To expand the application of the unidirectional lamina based composite UMAT, braiding/weaving with through-thickness integration points method is proposed with examples to simulate the deformation behavior of textile composites."--Iii-iv.

Book excerpt: "Dynamic constitutive model and failure criteria were developed to predict impact perforation of laminated polymer matrix composite material under projectile loading. It was assumed that the rate-dependent characteristics of the composite can be described by time-dependent or viscoelastic property of the polymer matrix. Relaxation functions were used to derive a time-dependent stiffness matrix for a unidirectional IM6G/3501-6 carbon/epoxy laminate. The epoxy was represented as a Maxwell element in parallel with a linear spring, while the carbon was modeled as a linear spring. The viscoelastic properties of the epoxy were obtained by fitting the constitutive equations to the experimental data at a constant strain rate. The Hashin's 3D failure criteria were used to predict the dynamic failure of composite by replacing quasi-static strength properties with rate-dependent strength properties. The dynamic constitutive equations were incorporated into LS-DYNA3D via a user-defined material subroutine and used to predict the transient response of a 32 ply AS4/3501-6 carbon/epoxy laminate under projectile loading. The maximum contact force between the projectile and laminate was found to be only 7% higher than the experimental data. The dynamic failure criterion was also incorporated into LS-DYNA to simulate damage of an AS4/3501-6 carbon/epoxy laminate. The FEA program was able to simulate expected tensile fracture and transverse sheer failure modes of a thin and thick ply during projectile impact. A full ballistic impact simulation was also done on a [(0/90/45/-45),]2 graphite/epoxy (AS4/3501-6) laminate. Residual velocities were evaluated for different striking velocities and the FEA results were at most 8% higher than the experimental data."--Iii-iv

Book excerpt: A recently developed constitutive model is implemented into LS-DYNA as a user defined material model (UMAT) to characterize the nonlinear strain rate dependent behavior of polymers. By utilizing this model within a micromechanics technique based on a laminate analogy, an algorithm to analyze the strain rate dependent, nonlinear deformation of a fiber reinforced polymer matrix composite is then developed as a UMAT to simulate the response of these composites under high strain rate impact. The models are designed for shell elements in order to ensure computational efficiency. Experimental and numerical stress-strain curves are compared for two representative polymers and a representative polymer matrix composite, with the analytical model predicting the experimental response reasonably well. Book excerpt: Recently applications have exposed polymer matrix composite materials to very high strain rate loading conditions, requiring an ability to understand and predict the material behavior under these extreme conditions. In this second paper of a two part report, a three-dimensional composite micromechanical model is described which allows for the analysis of the rate dependent, nonlinear deformation response of a polymer matrix composite. Strain rate dependent inelastic constitutive equations utilized to model the deformation response of a polymer are implemented within the micromechanics method. The deformation response of two representative laminated carbon fiber reinforced composite materials with varying fiber orientation has been predicted using the described technique. The predicted results compare favorably to both experimental values and the response predicted by the Generalized Method of Cells, a well-established micromechanics analysis method. Book excerpt: A research program is being undertaken to develop rate dependent deformation and failure models for the analysis of polymer matrix composite materials. In previous work in this program, strain-rate dependent inelastic constitutive equations used to analyze polymers have been implemented into a mechanics of materials based composite micromechanics method. In the current work, modifications to the micromechanics model have been implemented to improve the calculation of the effective inelastic strain. Additionally, modifications to the polymer constitutive model are discussed in which pressure dependence is incorporated into the equations in order to improve the calculation of constituent and composite shear stresses. The Hashin failure criterion is implemented into the analysis method to allow for the calculation of ply level failure stresses. The deformation response and failure stresses for two representative uniaxial polymer matrix composites, IM7/977-2 and AS4-PEEK, are predicted for varying strain rates and fiber orientations. The predicted results compare favorably to experimentally obtained values.Goldberg, Robert K. and Stouffer, Donald C.Glenn Research CenterPOLYMER MATRIX COMPOSITES; DEFORMATION; STRAIN RATE; FAILURE ANALYSIS; MICROMECHANICS; PRESSURE DEPENDENCE; SHEAR STRESS; FIBER ORIENTATION; FAILURE; CONSTITUTIVE EQUATIONS; CRITERIA

Book excerpt: The formulation of an elastic/viscoplastic constitutive model which was used to predict the measured behavior of graphite/thermoplastic and graphite/bismaleimide composite materials at elevated temperature is described. The model incorporates the concepts of overstress and effective strain/strain to provide a simple formulation which was able to account for material behavior under monotonic tension or compression loads over a temperature range of 23 to 200 C. Observed behavior such as stress relaxation and steady state creep, in off-axis tension and compression tests, were predicted by the model. Material constants required by the model were extracted from simple off-axis test data. Gates, Thomas S. Langley Research Center RTOP 505-63-01-05...

Book excerpt: Recently applications have exposed polymer matrix composite materials to very high strain rate loading conditions, requiring an ability to understand and predict the material behavior under these extreme conditions. In this first paper of a two part report, background information is presented, along with the constitutive equations which will be used to model the rate dependent nonlinear deformation response of the polymer matrix. Strain rate dependent inelastic constitutive models which were originally developed to model the viscoplastic deformation of metals have been adapted to model the nonlinear viscoelastic deformation of polymers. The modified equations were correlated by analyzing the tensile/ compressive response of both 977-2 toughened epoxy matrix and PEEK thermoplastic matrix over a variety of strain rates. For the cases examined, the modified constitutive equations appear to do an adequate job of modeling the polymer deformation response. A second follow-up paper will describe the implementation of the polymer deformation model into a composite micromechanical model, to allow for the modeling of the nonlinear, rate dependent deformation response of polymer matrix composites. Book excerpt: A research program is in progress to develop strain rate dependent deformation and failure models for the analysis of polymer matrix composites subject to impact loads. Previously, strain rate dependent inelastic constitutive equations developed to model the polymer matrix were incorporated into a mechanics of materials based micromechanics method. In the current work, the micromechanics method is revised such that the composite unit cell is divided into a number of slices. Micromechanics equations are then developed for each slice, with laminate theory applied to determine the elastic properties, effective stresses and effective inelastic strains for the unit cell. Verification studies are conducted using two representative polymer matrix composites with a nonlinear, strain rate dependent deformation response. The computed results compare well to experimentally obtained values.Goldberg, Robert K.Glenn Research CenterDEFORMATION; ELASTIC PROPERTIES; FAILURE ANALYSIS; POLYMER MATRIX COMPOSITES; NUMERICAL ANALYSIS; CONSTITUTIVE EQUATIONS; STRAIN RATE; NONLINEARITY; MICROMECHANICS; LAMINATES; IMPACT LOADS
