Book excerpt: Ozone, an important trace component, is critical to life on Earth and to atmospheric chemistry. The presence of ozone profoundly impacts the physical structure of the atmosphere and meteorology. Ozone is also an important photolytic source for HO radicals, the driving force for most of the chemistry that occurs in the lower atmosphere, is essential to shielding biota, and is the only molecule in the atmosphere that provides protection from UV radiation in the 250-300 nm region. However, recent concerns regarding environmental issues have inspired a need for a greater understanding of ozone, and the effects that it has on the Earth's atmosphere. The Mechanisms of Reactions Influencing Atmospheric Ozone provides an overview of the chemical processes associated with the formation and loss of ozone in the atmosphere, meeting the need for a greater body of knowledge regarding atmospheric chemistry. Renowned atmospheric researcher Jack Calvert and his coauthors discuss the various chemical and physical properties of the earth's atmosphere, the ways in which ozone is formed and destroyed, and the mechanisms of various ozone chemical reactions in the different spheres of the atmosphere. The volume is rich with valuable knowledge and useful descriptions, and will appeal to environmental scientists and engineers alike. A thorough analysis of the processes related to tropospheric ozone, The Mechanisms of Reactions Influencing Atmospheric Ozone is an essential resource for those hoping to combat the continuing and future environmental problems, particularly issues that require a deeper understanding of atmospheric chemistry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The care of pregnant women presents one of the paradoxes of modern medicine. Women usually require little medical intervention during an (uneventful) pregnancy. Conversely, those at high risk of damage to their own health or that of their unborn require the help of appropriate medicinal technology, including drugs. Accordingly, there are two classes of pregnant women, the larger group requires support but not much intervention, while the other needs the full range of diagnostic and therapeutic measures applied in any other branch of medicine. This book presents the current state of knowledge about drugs in pregnancy. In each chapter information is presented separately for two different aspects of the problem seeking a drug appropriate for prescription during pregnancy, and assessing the risk of a drug when exposure has already taken place. Practising clinicians who prescribe medicinal products to women who are, or who may become, pregnant, will find this volume an invaluable reference.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past 25 years in chemical kinetics have seen major advances in studyiqg the mechanisms of complex chemical re actions, in particular free radical reactions. Many differ ent methods have been developed for quantitative studies of elementary chemical reactions. Thousands of rate constants have been measured, for hundreds of diverse chemical reac tions. It is becoming more and more difficult for the chemist to orient himself in the voluminous and rapidly growing liter ature of chemical reaction kinetics. This leads to major expenditures of time in searching out, collecting. and eval uating quantitative kinetic data; to unnecessary repetition (duplication) of research; and to a situation in which the rich material already accumulated in the field of chemical kinetics is very often not fully utilized in comparing, interpreting, and analyzing new experimental data. There is a pressing need for the creation of a series of handbooks on reaction rate constants. Such work was begun several years ago at the initiative of V. N. Kondrat'ev, and is now going forward under his direction at the Institute of Chemical Physics of the USSR Academy of Sciences. This book is devoted to liquid-phase, homolytic reactions. Part One contains data on monomolecular reactions in which molecules decompose to form radicals, as well as data on bi molecular and trimolecular reactions that form free radicals.

Book excerpt: Borne out of the current widespread interest in the pollution of water bodies, this book explores the latest research concerning the photochemical fate of organic pollutants in surface water. The main objective is to give insight into both the functioning of ecosystems and the behaviour of emerging pollutants in those ecosystems. Particular importance is dedicated to techniques that can be used in the field and in the laboratory for the detection of pollutants and of their transformation intermediates. The inclusion of photochemical processes that have not gained previous coverage will afford the reader novel insights, whilst the focus on modelling and transformation intermediates will ensure the title's relevance to academics, the chemical manufacturing industries and environmental assessment experts alike.

Book excerpt: This book’s main objective is to decipher for the reader the main processes in the atmosphere and the quantification of air pollution effects on humans and the environment, through first principles of meteorology and modelling/measurement approaches. The understanding of the complex sequence of events, starting from the emission of air pollutants into the atmosphere to the human health effects as the final event, is necessary for the prognosis of potential risk to humans from specific chemical compounds and mixtures of them. It fills a gap in the literature by providing a solid grounding in the first principles of meteorology and air pollution, making it particularly useful for undergraduate students. Its broad scope makes it a valuable text in many related disciplines, containing a comprehensive and integrated methodology to study the first principles of air pollution, meteorology, indoor air pollution, and human exposure. Problem-solving exercises help to reinforce concepts.
