So when a mysterious wasp queen invades his dreams, offering to “fix” the baby, Steve thinks his prayers have been answered. All he has to do is say “Yes.” But “yes” is a powerful word. It is also a dangerous one. And once it is uttered, can it be taken back? Celebrated author Kenneth Oppel creates an eerie masterpiece in this compelling story that explores disability and diversity, fears and dreams, and what ultimately makes a family. Includes illustrations from celebrated artist Jon Klassen.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To ebb is human, to flow divine. Our main character, Thomas Burke, goes by the nickname Figas, a math prodigy who specializes in prediction theory. When he learns that the tea grown in his childhood home has become of extreme value, he predicts that multinational corporations will swoop in and wrestle control of the tea operations from the gentle islanders. Figas sails with Capt. Martin aboard the Lady Slipper, reaching Green Island on the morning of the biggest festival of the year. It isnt long before the tea master, Uncle Sun, sweeps Figas and his perfect prediction model over the threshold. Potential threats are forgotten, as Figas becomes reacquainted with the main character of the story, the island of Viridis. Across Teagates swinging bridge, the traditional way of tea still prospers. Hidden within the simple lifestyle lies the center of the world, where time stops for tea. Mirroring the ruthless Dutch East Indian Company, which controlled the tea and spice trade for two hundred years, the ACUGO Corporation unleashes a plot to take control of the islands precious export. Put on the kettle, and cozy up to a nice cup of tea and watch as the islanders use a mixture of Upaya, (skillful means) and humor to resist the outside forces that threaten them. Viridis, also known as Green Island, is a tiny fi ctional nation founded in the 12th century by a mixed-race crew whose ship was blown off course while returning from Canton. Thomas Burke, descendant of an island founder, left home to pursue a career in mathematics, specializing in prediction theory; Viridians call him Figas, patois for Figures. Now, a foundation director has tapped him to return and warn the gentle islanders that Viridis teamore expensive per ounce than goldis in danger of attracting greedy attention. When an occupying force takes over Viridis, Figas and the locals face an enormous challenge: how to fi nd an island way of protecting themselves. They call on sacrifi ce, patience, showmanship and the spirit of the islandand readers will join the cheering section. In his accomplished debut novel, Seiler deftly sketches memorable, diverse characters while drawing on fascinating historical background. Witty, idiomatic dialogue provides many pithy lines: a fox is a wolf who sends fl owers; The Buddha would play viola. Its the middle way. The opening setupnot to mention the novels charm, wit and underlying seriousnessrecalls The Mouse That Roared by Leonard Wibberley, but this islike Sighing Woman Teaa unique and fl avorful blend, by turns comic, poignant, philosophical and romantic. As the book progresses, it gets tighter, funnier and more deeply emotional. Seiler never condescends to his islanders; they may act in comical ways, but they, the island and their tea are to be taken seriously. Nor are the invaders uniformly evil: An Irish soldiers good heart makes an excellent counterpoint to the blockheaded Cmdr. Prescott. Seiler nicely handles the islanders tricky maneuvers to outwit the invaders, holding enough back for suspense and providing several well-done set pieces that reveal the islanders gifts with satisfying payoffs. Steeped in the charm and traditions of tea drinking and underlaid with serious thought about compassion, this novel is simply wonderful. A delight to read from start to finish. Kirkus Reviews

Betrayal. Blackmail. Revenge. Will there ever be a time when those three words don't rule my life? Welcome to the world of Hawthorne Prep. A seemingly idyllic school where ivy clings to the thick stone walls and a wrought iron gate keeps out the townies who can’t afford to foot the hefty price tag. Except…I’m one of those townies. I’m here on scholarship and don’t belong. At least, that’s the way I’d always felt before Austin came along and blew my world apart. He’s the boy I secretly longed for but never thought could be mine. Against the odds, we managed to overcome the obstacles standing in our way in order to find our happily ever after. I’d assumed escaping my ex would be the hard part. I was wrong. Oh, so wrong. Just when I thought we were safe and could move on with our lives, everything gets turned upside down, morphing into a twisted new reality. One that makes what happened earlier look like child’s play. Vengeance like never before consumes him. This time, he’ll make sure I shatter into a thousand jagged pieces. Ones that can never be put back together again. Princess of Hawthorne Prep is book two in a duet and not a standalone novel. Prince of Hawthorne Prep should be read before this book in order to fully enjoy the story. The completed duet is a standalone story with a HEA within the Hawthorne Prep series. You do not need to read King of Hawthorne Prep or Queen of Hawthorne Prep to enjoy this duet. --- “It was seriously literary perfection, it toyed with my emotions in the best of ways and gave me just what I was hoping for... a heart-torturing happily ever after that I won't soon forget!” - Misty, Red Reads Romance “This emotional rollercoaster was intense, frustrating, smexy, and everything in between. Book excerpt: “A definitive guide to astronomy’s hottest field.” —The Economist Since its formation nearly five billion years ago, our planet has been the sole living world in a vast and silent universe. But over the past two decades, astronomers have discovered thousands of “exoplanets,” including some that could be similar to our own world, and the pace of discovery is accelerating. In a fascinating account of this unfolding revolution, Lee Billings draws on interviews with the world’s top experts in the search for life beyond earth. He reveals how the search for exoplanets is not only a scientific challenge, but also a reflection of our culture’s timeless hopes, dreams, and fears.

Book excerpt: The first precision measurements on CP violation in the B system are reported. Both the BELLE and the BABAR collaboration presented, among others, results for sin 2ß with much improved accuracy. Results from the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory, SNO, also deserve to be mentioned. The convincing evidence of solar neutrino oscillations had been presented by SNO prior to the conference; a full presentation was given at the conference. An incredibly precise measurement of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon is reported, a fresh result from the Brookhaven National Laboratory. Apart from these distinct physics highlights, there are also the first results from the new Tevatron run and from the relativistic heavy ion collider RHIC. Theorists write of our ever better understanding of the Standard Model and of what might lie beyond. Risky as it is to highlight only a couple of exciting subjects, it is merely meant to whet the appetite for further reading.

Book excerpt: Named a Most Anticipated Book of 2022 by PopSugar, Ms. magazine, Medium, Book Riot, BookPage, CrimeReads, Tor Nightfire, Bookshop, Book Talk, BiblioLifestyle, and more! AN APRIL 2022 BELLETRIST BOOK CLUB PICK “Morrow uses her heroine’s warped perspective to examine painful truths about race and class in America, but this isn’t a book intended to teach anyone a lesson, except maybe: Be careful. You never know who’s really in control.”—Los Angeles Times From bestselling author Bethany C. Morrow comes a new adult social horror novel in the vein of Get Out meets My Sister, the Serial Killer, about Farrah, a young, calculating Black girl who manipulates her way into the lives of her Black best friend’s white, wealthy, adoptive family but soon suspects she may not be the only one with ulterior motives. . . . Seventeen-year-old Farrah Turner is one of two Black girls in her country club community, and the only one with Black parents. Her best friend, Cherish Whitman, adopted by a white, wealthy family, is something Farrah likes to call WGS—White Girl Spoiled. With Brianne and Jerry Whitman as parents, Cherish is given the kind of adoration and coddling that even upper-class Black parents can’t seem to afford—and it creates a dissonance in her best friend that Farrah can exploit. When her own family is unexpectedly confronted with foreclosure, the calculating Farrah is determined to reassert the control she’s convinced she’s always had over her life by staying with Cherish, the only person she loves—even when she hates her. As troubled Farrah manipulates her way further into the Whitman family, the longer she stays, the more her own parents suggest that something is wrong in the Whitman house. She might trust them—if they didn’t think something was wrong with Farrah, too. When strange things start happening at the Whitman household—debilitating illnesses, upsetting fever dreams, an inexplicable tension with Cherish’s hotheaded boyfriend, and a mysterious journal that seems to keep track of what is happening to Farrah—it’s nothing she can’t handle. But soon everything begins to unravel when the Whitmans invite Farrah closer, and it’s anyone’s guess who is really in control. Told in Farrah’s chilling, unforgettable voice and weaving in searing commentary on race and class, this slow-burn social horror will keep you on the edge of your seat until the last page.

Book excerpt: India, 1955. As the scars of Partition are beginning to heal, seventeen-year-old Meera sits enraptured: in the spotlight is Dev, singing a song so infused with passion that it arouses in her the first flush of erotic longing. But when Meera's reverie comes true, it does not lead to the fairy-tale marriage she imagined. Meera has no choice but to obey her in-laws, tolerate Dev's drunken night-time fumblings, even observe the most arduous of Hindu fasts for his longevity. A move to Bombay seems at first like a fresh start, but soon that dream turns to ashes. It is only when their son is born that things change and Meera is ready to unleash the passion she has suppressed for so long.
