Book excerpt: *Major New York Times Bestseller *More than 2.6 million copies sold *One of The New York Times Book Review's ten best books of the year *Selected by The Wall Street Journal as one of the best nonfiction books of the year *Presidential Medal of Freedom Recipient *Daniel Kahneman's work with Amos Tversky is the subject of Michael Lewis's best-selling The Undoing Project: A Friendship That Changed Our Minds In his mega bestseller, Thinking, Fast and Slow, Daniel Kahneman, world-famous psychologist and winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics, takes us on a groundbreaking tour of the mind and explains the two systems that drive the way we think. System 1 is fast, intuitive, and emotional; System 2 is slower, more deliberative, and more logical. The impact of overconfidence on corporate strategies, the difficulties of predicting what will make us happy in the future, the profound effect of cognitive biases on everything from playing the stock market to planning our next vacation—each of these can be understood only by knowing how the two systems shape our judgments and decisions. Engaging the reader in a lively conversation about how we think, Kahneman reveals where we can and cannot trust our intuitions and how we can tap into the benefits of slow thinking. He offers practical and enlightening insights into how choices are made in both our business and our personal lives—and how we can use different techniques to guard against the mental glitches that often get us into trouble. Topping bestseller lists for almost ten years, Thinking, Fast and Slow is a contemporary classic, an essential book that has changed the lives of millions of readers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do smart and experienced leaders make flawed, even catastrophic, decisions? Why do people keep believing they have made the right choice, even with the disastrous result staring them in the face? And how can you be sure you're making the right decision--without the benefit of hindsight? Sydney Finkelstein, Jo Whitehead, and Andrew Campbell show how the usually beneficial processes of the human mind can become traps when we face big decisions. The authors show how the shortcuts our brains have learned to take over millennia of evolution can derail our decision making. Think Again offers a powerful model for making better decisions, describing the key red flags to watch for and detailing the decision-making safeguards we need. Using examples from business, politics, and history, Think Again deconstructs bad decisions, as they unfolded in real time, to show how you can avoid the same fate.

One of the most endearing teen voices I’ve ever encountered.” —Becky Albertalli, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda For fans of Sandhya Menon and Adam Silvera comes a prom-night romantic-comedy romp about a Sikh teen's search for love and identity. Sunny G's brother left him one thing when he died: His notebook, which Sunny is determined to fill up with a series of rash decisions. Decision number one was a big one: He stopped wearing his turban, cut off his hair, and shaved his beard. He doesn't look like a Sikh anymore. He doesn't look like himself anymore. Even his cosplay doesn't look right without his beard. Sunny debuts his new look at prom, which he's stuck going to alone. He's skipping the big fandom party—the one where he'd normally be in full cosplay, up on stage playing bass with his band and his best friend, Ngozi—in favor of the Very Important Prom Experience. An experience that's starting to look like a bust. Enter Mindii Vang, a girl with a penchant for making rash decisions of her own, starting with stealing Sunny's notebook. When Sunny chases after her, prom turns into an all-night adventure—a night full of rash, wonderful, romantic, stupid, life-changing decisions. * "[For] fans of John Green and Sandhya Menon, Sunny G is . . . full of heart. It's not one to miss.” —Booklist (starred review) "Reading Sunny G’s Series of Rash Decisions is the best decision you could make.” —Jeff Zentner, award-winning author of The Serpent King “Poignant and moving.” —Kirkus Reviews

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Transportation Experience explores the historical evolution of transportation modes and technologies. The book traces how systems are innovated, planned and adapted, deployed and expanded, and reach maturity, where they may either be maintained in a polished obsolesce often propped up by subsidies, be displaced by competitors, or be reorganized and renewed. An array of examples supports the idea that modern policies are built from past experiences. William Garrison and David Levinson assert that the planning (and control) of nonlinear, unstable processes is today's central transportation problem, and that this is universal and true of all modes. Modes are similar, in that they all have a triad structure of network, vehicles, and operations; but this framework counters conventional wisdom. Most think of each mode as having a unique history and status, and each is regarded as the private playground of experts and agencies holding unique knowledge, operating in isolated silos. However, this book argues that while modes have an appearance of uniqueness, the same patterns repeat: systems policies, structures, and behaviors are a generic design on varying modal cloth. In the end, the illusion of uniqueness proves to be myopic. While it is true that knowledge has accumulated from past experiences, the heavy hand of these experiences places boundaries on current knowledge; especially on the ways professionals define problems and think about processes. The Transportation Experience provides perspective for the collections of models and techniques that are the essence of transportation science, and also expands the boundaries of current knowledge of the field.

Book excerpt: For this generation of Moms, there is no cookie-cutter mold for how motherhood should be or, more importantly, how it should appear to be. These days, whether we moms have a career or stay at home with our kids, whether we are single, married, divorced, or widowed, we are forging a new path in motherhood. Perhaps most importantly, this generation of moms is releasing the need to be perfect all the time, and is embracing the notion that we can have balance in our life (most days). This new breed of moms understands that this frees up the time and energy necessary to pursue growth in ourselves outside motherhood. Furthermore, we are learning to shake off guilt and celebrate the imperfections in our daily lives. This empowers us to redefine ourselves, to use our gifts and talents to create a purposeful vision for our lives outside motherhood. Finally, we are becoming champions of our own lives, awakening the "champreneurs" within ourselves. We are grateful for the sacrifices our mothers, grandmothers, and great-grandmothers made to get us to this point. We are merely standing on their shoulders. Without them we are nothing; our gratitude to them is everything. But rather than looking behind us for affirmation, today's mothers lean on, support, and empower each other. No guilt allowed. Mommy Magic gives these moms an encouraging pat on the back, a good laugh, and affirmation that being real is important. It gives moms permission to admit that motherhood is not perfect; it is, in fact, a journey. Mommy Magic is meant to be a humorous and inspirational guide to living in chaos, an empowering and easy read to squeeze in while waiting in the carpool line. Most of all, Mommy Magic is meant as a vehicle for mothers to share, talk and laugh over the fact that nobody is perfect all the time.

Book excerpt: A Wall Street Journal Bestseller! From the bestselling author of Growth IQ comes a guide to enhancing customer and employee experience simultaneously for unprecedented revenue growth In the war for customer acquisition, businesses invest millions of dollars to improve customer experience. They deliver packages faster, churn out new products, and endlessly revamp their UI, often putting greater strain on employees for diminishing returns. According to Tiffani Bova, this siloed focus on customer experience – without considering the impact on your staff – actually hinders growth in the long run. The most successful companies adopt an Experience Mindset that strengthens both employee experience (EX) and customer experience (CX) at the same time. Based on exclusive research from two Salesforce-sponsored studies of thousands of employees and c-suite executives, The Experience Mindset details exactly how your company can adopt an Experience Mindset, at scale. It’s not enough to know that happy employees equals happy customers. You must have an intentional, balanced approach to company strategy that involves all stakeholders – IT, Marketing, Sales, Operations, and HR – with KPIs and ownership over outcomes. In this ground-breaking book, filled with case studies of leading companies and never-before-seen research, you’ll learn: How people, processes, technology, and culture contribute to the “virtuous cycle” of EX and CX. Why the best companies have programs that minimize the customer’s effort as well as the employee’s effort (and how companies like Southwest and Best Buy get this right) How to effectively roll out technology solutions that boost both EX and CX (hard truth: only 20% of customer-facing employees believe technology makes their job easier. Employees want a seamless technology experience, just like your customers.) What metrics you can use to measure EX, CX, and ultimately, the effect of the two together. You can’t improve what you can’t measure. Employees are the heart of your business. If you want to remain competitive in today’s marketplace, investing in people is no longer a nice-to-have, but rather a must have.

It’s free to do. - The world responds, giving us better results. Instead of letting our mindsets control us, here is our chance to determine our future. Our first surprise is that nature gives us a negative mindset. We have programs that fear everything. Nature wants us to survive. Surviving is good, but achieving is great. And what about others? Can they affect our mindsets? Certainly, if we let them. This book gives us the tools to take control of our minds. Why be victims when we can be victors? Not only can we use these mindset skills for our personal success, but we can also change the mindsets of others. We can put our groups on the path to more positive outcomes and growth. What is magical about changing our mindsets? Other people can detect our mindsets and will react to them. This is how we can affect the outcomes in our lives. So even before we help others change their mindsets, our personal mindsets give us a big head start toward our goals. Why wouldn’t we change our mindsets? Because we don’t know how. Let’s learn the precise skills to make this happen.

Book excerpt: The spirit in man causes self-evaluation, reflection and ultimately the search for meaning and life's purpose. It is the empowering energy of humanity to seek and allow many to find the love of God that surpasses all reasoned understanding. Our life's journey is replete with mountains. The moments on mountain peaks are times for discovery and choices, conveying a lifetime process of spiritual identity and transformation. In CLIFFHANGERS, examples are offered from the Scriptures of individuals experiencing time at the pinnacle of the mountain, the questions they may have pondered and the outcome of their allotted time on the cliff: To show that every choice results in decisions which affect eternal security; To encourage you to focus on every choice by seeking God for the decision (Prov. 3:5-6); To develop a sincere and unyielding attitude regarding your relationship with God; To place this natural life and all things related to it into proper perspective (II Tim. 4:7); and To learn that all choices lead to a place of decision and all circumstances following each decision can be associated with advancement, neutrality or even decline in spiritual growth. The intended audience is anyone struggling with the complexity of life choices or in need of guidance with a life changing decision.

We all face hard decisions every day—and the choices we make, and how others perceive them, can be life changing. There are countless books on how to make those tough calls, but How Women Decide is the first to examine a much overlooked truth: Men and women reach verdicts differently, and often in surprising ways. Stress? It makes women more focused. Confidence? Caution can lead to stronger resolutions. And despite popular misconceptions, women are just as decisive as men—though they may pay for it. Pulling from the latest science on decision-making, as well as lively stories of real women and their experiences, cognitive scientist Therese Huston teaches us how we can better shape our habits, perceptions, and strategies, not just to make the most of our own opportunities, but to reform the culture and bring out the best results—regardless of who’s behind them.

Book excerpt: Every year, an estimated 1.6 million Americans participate in short-term mission trips, spending over one billion dollars—figures that have increased exponentially in the last two decades. About one third of U.S. congregations sponsor such trips each year. While they are referred to as “mission” trips, many trips focus not on conversion or evangelism, but on service projects—building a playground, providing medical care, or serving free meals to the poor. Short-term mission participants have a genuine desire to transform conditions of poverty, yet they don't always know how to go about it; many people involved in short-term mission work virtually reinvent the wheel when they design and plan their service projects. Making a Difference in a Globalized World: Short-term Missions thatWork is a guide to leaders of such trips. The book presents clear insight and research from anthropologists and development professionals, and encourages individuals to lead mission trips that make a greater impact on the communities that they are serving. The text provides: a framework for planning short-term mission trips; foundation for planning; personal anecdotes and case studies; and practical suggestions for volunteer opportunities. This handbook is a vital resource for any potential mission volunteers or organizers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You and I can receive the highest and best God has prepared for us. Our consistent spiritual growth comes from praying, reading, studying and applying Bible doctrine in our daily living. Bible doctrine creates capacity for life, for love, for Christian service, for blessing, for happiness. God has devised the design of the ages, the perfect plan for each one of us personally. All you and I have to do is understand His gracious offer and seize the incomparable opportunity for a life of meaning, purpose, and definition. This book will help to show you how to uncover the Plan of God which reveals Gods provision for your salvation, His purpose for your existence after salvation, and the treasures He has waiting for your eternal future on earth and in heaven. The moment you believe in Christ you immediately share His life and destiny. But for us to attain the wonderful peace, happiness, and contentment God has planned for our lives on earth, we must learn Bible doctrine and grow to spiritual maturity. The Bible communicates Gods Word to you and I so absolute truth becomes the measure of our conscience, and the motivation of our life. Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful; But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper. [PSA 1:1-3] The young and ever-growing Christian will face many challenges in their lives but we must remember: Now thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and through us diffuses the fragrance of His knowledge in every place.[ 2CO 2:14] "Thus says the LORD who made it, the LORD who formed it to establish it (the LORD is His name): Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know.'
