Book excerpt: Progress in Astronautics and Rocketry, Volume 7: Hypersonic Flow Research compiles papers presented at a conference on hypersonics held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in August 1961. This book discusses the low Reynolds number effects, chemical kinetics effects, inviscid flow calculations, and experimental techniques relating to the problems in acquiring an understanding of hypersonic flow. The structure and composition of hypersonic wakes with attendant complex chemical kinetic effects is only briefly mentioned. This text consists of five parts. Parts A to C comprise of theoretical papers on the problems of calculating flow fields at hypersonic speeds. The experimental techniques that are of immediate practical interest in view of the difficulty of flight testing are discussed in Parts D and E. This publication is beneficial to engineers involved in advanced design problems.

Book excerpt: An experimental investigation was made to determine the pressure distribution, shock shape, and shock detachment distance for spheres and the latter two characteristics for flatfaced bodies in a heated argon flow. The modified Newtonian approximation for the pressure distribution, which is strictly an empirical relationship, gives good results when applied to the first 60 degrees of a hemisphere under conditions where the body boundary layer and the shock layer merge. The natural flow visualization produced as a result of the high total temperature and consequent excitation of the argon enabled this study to be made. Photographs taken of the shocks generated by a series of spheres and flat-faced bodies were analyzed with a photo-densitometer to determine the shock shape and shock detachment distance. The blast analogy predicts a difference in the shape of shocks in argon and air at high Mach numbers and Reynolds numbers. An empirical relationship proposed by Love was used to calculate the shock shape in air for Mach numbers corresponding to those of the present investigation. (Author).

Book excerpt: An investigation of the behavior of flat-faced, impact-pressure probes with a range of orificeto-probe diameter ratios was made in heated A under conditions where free stream Mach. = 4 to 14, gas temperature = 2700 to 4300 K, and Reynolds number (based on outside probe diameter and conditions behind a normal shock)/in. = 30 to 430. At the lower Reynolds numbers the measured impact pressure was found to decrease with the pressure sensing orifice size. This result agrees with that found in heated N. As the Reynolds number increased this orifice effect became less significant, and at the higher Reynolds numbers no decrease in measured impact pressure was noted for the smallest orifice tested. This tends to confirm the assumption made in some experiments on impact-pressure probes in a low-density hypervelocity flow (AD-268 391) that this behavior is caused by a thermomolecular flow effect. Because this effect is a function solely of pressure at a particular temperature, the greater the pressure the smaller the effect. When Re2 times the square root of density in free stream over density in normal shock is less than 800 in A the measured impact pressure was less than the true impact pressure and decreased to a minimum value, approximately 93% of the true value. As the Reynolds number decreased still further, the viscous effects became dominant, and there was a sharp increase in the measured impact pressure. (Author).s

Book excerpt: Hypersonic Flow Theory presents the fundamentals of fluid mechanics, focusing on the hypersonic flow theory and approaches in theoretical aerodynamics. This book discusses the assumptions underlying hypersonic flow theory, unified supersonic-hypersonic similitude, two-dimensional and axisymmetric bodies, and circular cylinder. The constant-streamtube-area approximation, streamtube-continuity methods, and tangent-wedge and tangent-cone are also deliberated. This text likewise covers the similar laminar boundary layer solutions, bluntness induced interactions on slender bodies, and free molecule transfer theory. The dynamics of hypersonic flight or hypersonic wing theory, magnetohydrodynamic theory, or any developments involving treatment of the Boltzmann equation are not included. This publication is intended for hypersonic aerodynamicists, students, and researchers conducting work on the hypersonic flow phenomena.

Book excerpt: Measurements of average heat-transfer rates to blunt-nosed, axisymmetric, cold-walled bodies in a low-density, hypervelocity wind tunnel are given. Stream density was such that Reynolds and Knudsen numbers, based on nose radius and conditions immediately behind the bow shock, varied from 5 to 20 and 0.11 to 0.056, respectively. Thus, scaling on the basis of Knudsen number, these conditions may be said to simulate a body of one-foot nose radius at as much as 315,500-ft altitude. Heat-transfer rates are discussed in relation to the flow model successfully used in the past for studies of flows of high Reynolds number. In this context, it was found that measured heat-transfer rates to hemispheres below shock-layer Reynolds numbers of 20 exhibited a decreasing nondimensionalized rate relative to that estimated by methods appropriate to high Reynolds number conditions. This behavior is in accord with various applicable theories. Rates for the flat-faced bodies showed no tendency to decrease, and they were somewhat higher than predicted by theories for high Reynolds numbers.

Book excerpt: This volume, published in honor of Prof. Luigi Crocco, appears when Luigi Crocco celebrates his 75th birthday of a life devoted to study, research, and teaching. The events in his life and World War II forced Luigi Crocco, as well as other Italian scientists, to look to foreign countries for the calm haven so vital to study. This notwithstanding, his scientific activity was never inter rupted, and this volume is an acknowledgment of scientists and researchers to his work and life.
