Download or read book Gaining Health written by Anne Wood-Ritsatakis and published by WHO Regional Office Europe. This book was released on 2009 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Noncommunicable diseases pose the greatest threat to the health of the people in the WHO European Region, yet this is an area where the greatest health gains are available at relatively modest cost. This book gives detailed insight into policy development in eight European countries over several decades to address the challenge of noncommunicable diseases, and draws out the main themes to assist policy-makers in formulating their own responses. While originally developed to support countries in implementing the WHO European Strategy for the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases, the insights are likely to be of benefit to a much wider audience.
Book Synopsis Health Politics in Europe by : Ellen M. Immergut
Download or read book Health Politics in Europe written by Ellen M. Immergut and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021 with total page 1048 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Health Politics in Europe: A Handbook is a major new reference work, which provides historical background and up-to-date information and analysis on health politics and health systems throughout Europe. In particular, it captures developments that have taken place since the end of the Cold War, a turning point for many European health systems, with most post-communist transition countries privatizing their state-run health systems, and many Western European health systems experimenting with new public management and other market-oriented health reforms. Following three introductory, stage-setting chapters, the handbook offers country cases divided into seven regional sections, each of which begins with a short regional outlook chapter that highlights the region's common characteristics and divergent paths taken by the separate countries, including comparative data on health system financing, healthcare access, and the political salience of health. Each regional section contains at least one detailed main case, followed by shorter treatments of the other countries in the region. Country chapters feature a historical overview focusing on the country's progression through a series of political regimes and the consequences of this history for the health system; an overview of the institutions and functioning of the contemporary health system; and a political narrative tracing the politics of health policy since 1989. This political narrative, the core of each country case, examines key health reforms in order to understand the political motivations and dynamics behind them and their impact on public opinion and political legitimacy. The handbook's systematic structure makes it useful for country-specific, cross-national, and topical research and analysis.
Book Synopsis Mental Health Services in Europe by : Brimblecombe Neil
Download or read book Mental Health Services in Europe written by Brimblecombe Neil and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2023-01-20 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Worldwide, mental health problems are set to become the second greatest threat to health by the end of the next decade. The European Union has identified mental health problems as a growing concern, although there is great variation within EU countries with respect to patient numbers and the range of facilities available to them. Historically, EU mental healthcare services have been analysed using measurable aspects of care provisions such as throughput, costs and outcome measures. Little is known of the experiences, perceptions, beliefs and values of those accessing and providing services. This enlightening new book adopts a very different approach. With a particular focus on nursing, it examines and critiques the state of specialist mental health services in nine EU countries - Czech Republic, Finland, Ireland, Greece, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Germany, United Kingdom and Portugal. Each chapter focuses on a single country and ascertains existing services, their development, the treatments and care provided, factors preventing better service delivery, and suggestions for improvement. A rich pattern of differences emerge and comparisons can then be drawn. It also explores the emergence of an EU mental health identity in regards to selection of mental health personnel, their training and education, and the range of services they provide. Healthcare professionals and students with a particular interest in mental health issues (especially those with an interest in international approaches) will welcome the fresh analysis. It provides vital new information for European policy makers and shapers, voluntary sector personnel, and service users and the organisations representing them.

Download or read book Borders across Healthcare written by Nina Sahraoui and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2020-06-11 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining which actors determine undocumented migrants’ access to healthcare on the ground, this volume looks at what happens in the daily interactions between administrative personnel, healthcare professionals and migrant patients in healthcare institutions across Europe. Borders across Healthcare explores contemporary moral economies of the healthcare-migration nexus. The volume documents the many ways in which borders come to disrupt healthcare settings and illuminates how judgements of a health-related deservingness become increasingly important, producing hierarchies that undermine a universal right to healthcare.
Book Synopsis Reforms in Long-Term Care Policies in Europe by : Costanzo Ranci
Download or read book Reforms in Long-Term Care Policies in Europe written by Costanzo Ranci and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-11-08 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last two decades, many changes have happened to the social welfare policies of various industrial countries. Citizens have seen their pensions, unemployment benefits, and general healthcare policies shrink as “belt tightening” measures are enforced. But in contrast, long-term care has seen a general growth in public financing, an expansion of beneficiaries, and, more generally, an attempt to define larger social responsibilities and related social rights. The aim of this book is to describe and interpret the changes introduced in long-term care policies in Western Europe. The volume argues that recent reforms have brought about an increasing convergence in LTC policies. Most of the new programs have developed a new general approach to long-term care, based on a better integration of social care and health care. The book explores increasing public support given to family care work (in the past, the family would take care of the elderly or infirm) and increasing growth and recognition of a extended social care market (by which care has shifted from a moral obligation based on family reciprocity to a paid, professional activity). A new social care arrangement has therefore been developing in Western countries, based on a new mix of family obligations, market provision, and public support. In order to understand such changes, this analysis will take into account the social and economical impact of these reforms.

This book was released on 2017-06-01 with total page 1806 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European Convention for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment was adopted by the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe in June 1987. It entered into force in February 1989 and all 47 member States are Parties to the Convention. The Convention has already established itself as an important human rights instrument. Its approach is quite different from that of the European Convention on Human Rights. Whereas the ECHR provides a remedy for particular human rights violations after the event, the Convention for the Prevention of Torture (ECPT) seeks to prevent human rights violations, through a system of visits to places of detention. The Convention is intended to be an integrated part of the Council of Europe system for the protection of human rights, placing a proactive non-judicial mechanism alongside the reactive judicial mechanism established under the ECHR. The Yearbook of the European Convention for the Prevention of Torture offers an essential annual overview of developments in relation to the ECPT. Part One contains information on ratifications and other such issues in the authentic English and French texts. Part Two has details in English and French of the membership and activities of the Convention. Part Three reprints the twentieth annual General Report of the ECPT in the official English and French texts. Part Four contains the ECPT's reports to States and the State responses thereto that were made public during the year in question. The ECPT's reports are published in the official English and/or French texts and State responses in the English and/or French versions submitted by the States concerned. Bilingual English and French; two-volume set.
Book Synopsis Benchmarking Working Europe 2013 by :
Download or read book Benchmarking Working Europe 2013 written by and published by ETUI. This book was released on 2013 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Widening economic and social gaps among EU member states, as well as among different groups and categories of citizens within society, are not only placing in jeopardy the future of Social Europe but threatening to undermine also the whole project of European integration. The post-2008 recession and debt crisis, helped along by EU leaders’ obstinate clinging to the failing remedies of fiscal austerity, have accelerated the disenchantment of millions of European citizens with the half-century-old project to build and consolidate a European Union. This is one of the most striking conclusions of the ETUI’s Benchmarking Working Europe report for 2013. Benchmarking Working Europe is one of the ETUI’s regularly appearing flagship publications. Issued annually since 2002, the report offers an alternative perspective on EU developments. Using publicly accessible data, it reveals what is actually going on behind the EU social and economic affairs headlines. After last year’s issue focused on growing inequality in Europe, this year’s Benchmarking Working Europe report will demonstrate by means of hard-hitting graphs and cogent arguments that Europe is, rather than converging, actually drifting apart in numerous respects.
