Book excerpt: The Workshop on the Age Estimation of Sardine and Sardinella in Northwest Africa was organized in Casablanca, Morocco, from 4 to 9 December 2006. The Workshop was funded by project GCP/INT/730/NOR "International Cooperation with the Nansen Programme. Fisheries Management and Marine Environment" and organized by FAO and the National Institute of Fisheries Research (INRH). Altogether 15 scientists from seven countries and FAO participated. The Workshop reviewed and discussed the results of an otolith exchange that had been carried out in 2006 and which included both sardine and sardinella otoliths from different locations. The final outcome of the meeting consisted of revised agreed guidelines for the preparation and interpretation of sardine and sardinella otoliths. A new otolith exchange was initiated just after the Workshop to consolidate results.

L'Atelier est une des activités ayant pour but d'harmoniser l'interprétation de l'âge de la sardine et de la sardinelle dans la sous-région. L'objectif général de l'Atelier était de standardiser les méthodes de lecture d'âge de la sardine et de la sardinelle et d'assurer une interprétation commune des critères établis de lecture d'âge. L'activité a été organisée par la FAO dans le cadre du projet GCP/INT/730/NOR "Coopération internationale avec le Programme Nansen. Gestion des pêches et environnement marin", financée par l'Agence norvégienne de coopération pour le développement (NORAD) et réalisé en étroite collaboration avec l'Institut de recherche marine (IMR), Bergen, Norvège. L'Institut national de recherche halieutique (INRH) à Casablanca a accueilli l'Atelier et était responsable de l'organisation locale. La FAO est reconnaissante aux participants de l'Atelier qui ont contribué à la préparation du premier projet de ce rapport. L'édition finale a été faite par Cristina Morgado, Ana Maria Caramelo et Merete Tandstad. For most of the stocks, the time series from the acoustic surveys with the R/V DR. FRIDTJOF NANSEN and national research vessels are used as the index of abundance in the assessments and future assessments would therefore depend on the continuation of the time series by the local research vessels. The Norwegian research vessel, DR. FRIDTJOF NANSEN surveyed the subregion from 1995 to 2006, carrying out acoustic surveys during the months October-December each year. In addition, from 2001 to 2003, the vessel carried out acoustic surveys covering the same area from May to July. From 2004 to 2006, intercalibrations and parallel surveys were carried out between R/V DR.
