Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rapid Computation of Yield Tables for Managed, Even-Aged Timber Stands Sample plots in stands that represent a wide range of densities, average diameters, and site qualities are measured to obtain a means of estimating periodic diameter growth. Plot trees are bored at breast height to determine radial wood growth. Data are obtained to relate diameter inside bark to diameter outside bark and vice versa. Periodic wood and bark growths are subtracted from present diameters to get diameters at the beginning of the period. Present and past diameters are grouped in stand tables, with diameters of recently dead trees added to the past stand tables. Present and past stand tables are used to compute present and past basal areas per acre and aver age stand diameters. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Yield Tables for Managed Stands With Special Reference to the Black Hills A record of heights attained at various ages was needed for later use in the computa tion of volumes. Height-age relationships were established for stands continuously free to grow in height, SO that heights attainable by managed stands could be estimated. Heights attained by dominant and codominant trees were determined because they are far less affected by thinning from below than are aver age heights of all trees. Each site index class of interest was sampled so the effect of site quality on height growth could be determined. Records of the growth-prediction plots (fig. 2) were sorted to identify those plots that probably had a history of normal height growth. The data were further sorted by 10 foot Site index classes. Book excerpt: Forestry Economics introduces students and practitioners to all aspects of the management and economics of forestry. The book adopts the approach of managerial economics textbooks and applies this to the unique processes and problems faced by managers of forests. While most forestry economics books are written by economists for future economists, what many future forest and natural resource managers need is to understand what economic information is and how to use it to make better business and management decisions. John E. Wagner draws on his twenty years of experience teaching and working in the field of forest resource economics to present students with an accessible understanding of the unique production processes and problems faced by forest and other natural resource managers. There are three unique features of this book: The first is its organization. The material is organized around two common economic models used in forest and natural resources management decision making. The second is the use of case studies from various disciplines: Outdoor and Commercial Recreation, Wood Products Engineering, Forest Products, and Forestry. The purpose of these case studies is to provide students with applications of the concepts being discussed within the text. The third is revisiting the question of how to use economic information to make better business decisions at the end of each chapter. This ties each chapter to the preceding ones and reinforces the hypothesis that a solid working knowledge of these economic models and the information they contain are necessary for making better business decisions. This textbook is an invaluable source of clear and accessible information on forestry economics and management for not only economics students, but for students of other disciplines and those already working in forestry and natural resources.

Book excerpt: "Southern forests provide innumerable benefits. Forest scientists, managers, owners, and users have in common the desire to improve the condition of these forests and the ecosystems they support. A first step is to understand the contributions science has made and continues to make to the care and management of forests. This book represents a celebration of past accomplishments, summarizes the current state of knowledge, and creates a vision for the future of southern forestry research and management. Chapters are organized into seven sections: "Looking Back," "Productivity," "Forest Health," "Water and Soils," "Socioeconomic," "Biodiversity," and "Climate Change." Each section is preceded by a brief introductory chapter. Authors were encouraged to focus on the most important aspects of their topics; citations are included to guide readers to further information."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the majority of the world’s forest ecosystems are dominated by uneven-sized multi-species stands, forest management practice and theory has focused on the development of plantation monocultures to maximize the supply of timber at low cost. Societal expectations are changing, however, and uneven-aged multi-species ecosystems, selectively managed as Continuous Cover Forestry (CCF), are often believed to be superior to monocultures in addressing a wide range of expectations. This book presents methods which are relevant to CCF management and planning: analysing forest structures, silvicultural and planning, economic evaluation, based on examples in Europe, Asia, Africa and North and South America.
