Excerpt: ... squandered his enormous income, that he often found himself in urgent need of money. Posterity sees Leo X. in such glowing colours, because, far more than his predecessor, he patronised authors and poets, who in their turn extolled the name of Medici as a protector of arts and letters far more highly than that of Rovere. On examining, however, the literary and artistic works during the reign of Leo X., we see a prevailing tendency to imitate too closely the antique style, so useful as a study; but at the period of which we speak it became a passion, and carried its votaries far beyond the natural limits: they no longer sought merely to imitate the perfect forms and the sentiment of the beautiful with the ancients, but even carried their enthusiasm so far as to admire their failings. In painting, we find already amongst the artists who commenced their labours at the time when art had already reached its highest limits, a certain relaxing and an increasing propensity to a sort of sensualism. This propensity, at first scarcely sensible, soon degenerated into a vicious licence, and the rapid decay of art ensued. Raphael, more than any other artist, resisted this general fascination. He felt, indeed, a profound sympathy for the works of the Greeks and Romans of ancient times, but his noble nature always preserved him from the corrupting influences then beginning to be felt. His mythological subjects even, so marvellously endued with ancient taste, are always chaste and pure. He never deviated from the true path of art. At the accession of Leo X. Raphael had already passed five years at Rome. His position as an artist procured him the acquaintance of the most distinguished personages at the court, besides those whom he had formerly known at...

Book excerpt: An original, thematic book focused on one of Raphael's favourite subjects, female portraits, which embody the typical ideals of Italian Renaissance: Grace and Beauty. This monograph, catalogue of the Paris fall exhibition, presents a selection of Raphael's female portraits, including extraordinary masterpieces such as the Lady with Unicorn, La Fornarina (The Baker Girl), La Muta (The Mute Woman), La Velata (Woman with a Veil) and the Portrait of Giovanna d'Aragona, as well as other paintings and drawings: a rare and unprecedented event, covering the entire career of Raphael through 30 exceptional masterpieces coming from major museums of the world. Raphael of Urbino received his early training in art from his father, the painter Giovanni Santi. In 1499 he went to Perugia, in Umbria, and became a student and assistant of the painter Perugino. In 1504 Raphael moved to Florence, where he studied the work of established painters of the time as Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. At this time he made a transition from the typical style of the Umbrian school, with its emphasis on perspective and rigidly geometrical composition, to a more animated, informal manner of painting. In 1508 Raphael was called to Rome by Pope Julius II and commissioned to execute frescoes in the Vatican Palace. In 1513, after the accession of Leo X, Raphael's influence and responsibilities increased. He was made chief architect of Saint Peter's Basilica in 1514, and a year later was appointed director of all the excavations of antiquities in and near Rome. His portraits and double- portraits were highly sought after and established a standard for most Italian painters of the high Renaissance. He died in Rome onhis 37th birthday, April 6, 1520.

Book excerpt: A tribute to the master of Urbino on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of his death. The most important exhibition devoted to the painter in 2020. Published in collaboration with the greatest museums in the world, this monograph proposes an original journey backwards, "à rebour", in the universe of Raphael, where his relationship with the ancient and with Rome guides the reader in an unprecedented journey from the artist's death in 1520 to his formative years between Urbino, Città di Castello, Perugia and Siena. The monograph - published on the occasion of the major exhibition in Rome - has a scientific committee of excellence, composed by Matteo Lafranconi, Marzia Faietti, Sylvia Ferino, Alan Brown, Dominique Cordellier, Guido Cornini, Francesco Paolo Di Teodoro, Vincenzo Farinella, Achim Gnann, Barbara Jatta, Alessandro Nova, Nicholas Penny, Mario Scalini, Alessandro Viscogliosi; each member of the committee is the curator of one section of the catalogue which is introduced by his essay and accompanied by the entries of the works. For centuries Raphael (1483-1520) has been recognised as the supreme High Renaissance painter; though he died at 37, Raphael's example as a paragon of classicism dominated the academic tradition of European painting until the mid-19th century. Raphael was born in Urbino where his father, Giovanni Santi, was court painter. He almost certainly began his training there and must have known works by Mantegna, Paolo Uccello and Piero della Francesca from an early age. His earliest paintings were also greatly influenced by Perugino. From 1500 (when he became an independent master) to 1508 he worked throughout central Italy, particularly Florence, where he became a noted portraitist and painter of Madonnas. In 1508, at the age of 25, he was called to the court of Pope Julius II to help with the redecoration of the papal apartments. In Rome he evolved as a portraitist, and became one of the greatest of all history painters. He remained in Rome for the rest of his life and in 1514, on the death of Bramante, he was appointed architect in charge of St Peter's.
