Book excerpt: Sexual assault is highly prevalent on college campuses in the United States (U.S.), such that college students are at high risk for sexual victimization. Furthermore, while the disclosure rates to informal sources are more prevalent, disclosure to formal sources (e.g., legal authorities and university staff) and mental health service use of college students who have experienced sexual assault are low. As such, understanding the factors that either facilitate or hinder disclosure and service-seeking is of critical importance. Research has identified rape myth acceptance (RMA) and acknowledgment of the victimization (i.e., whether the survivor labels their experience as sexual assault) as two factors that shape the likelihood of whether a college survivor will disclose the incident or seek mental health services post-assault. The present study, therefore, focused on two aims: 1) to examine whether levels of RMA and acknowledgment are predictive of disclosing sexual assault and mental health service-seeking behaviors among college student survivors, and 2) to assess the indirect effects of RMA on disclosing the incident or seeking services for the assault via acknowledgment. Results identified RMA and acknowledgment as predictors of disclosure and service-seeking behaviors. Additionally, analyses provided evidence that certain types of rape myths are predictive of the outcomes. Results did not provide supporting evidence for the indirect effect of RMA on disclosure and service-seeking via acknowledgment. Implications for prevention, advocacy, and clinical practice, as well as future directions for research, are provided.

Book excerpt: Due to prevalent rape myth acceptance among college populations (Lonsway 1994, Bohner 1998), there is a disjuncture between the beliefs that rape can only be committed by a violent stranger and what actually happens. The less similar a victim's experience is to common rape myths, the less likely he or she will be to acknowledge it as rape or to seek help from police or counselors. One of the greatest consequences of not acknowledging a rape is the risk of re-victimization, for which a strong mechanism explanation has yet to be established (Classen et al 2005, Miller et al 2007). In affect control theory (ACT, Heise 1977), when an individual experiences something bizarre or unexpected, they often re-identify the actor, behavior, or object in order to avoid negative emotions and restore meaning to their world. Based on ACT and the literature on sexual assault, I propose that it will be uncommon to re-identify a friend or date as a rapist. Instead, victims will be more likely to re-identify the assault as acceptable sexual behavior, or themselves as to blame. Acknowledgment status and re-identifications alike have longstanding effects on the future experiences of individuals; if the rape is re-identified as acceptable sexual behavior, this puts the individual at risk for re-victimization. Re-identification is a possible mechanism for understanding re-victimization in the case of acquaintance or unacknowledged rape.

Book excerpt: "Sexual assault continues to be a pervasive problem, both for society in general and within the military community. To assist the Air Force in its continued efforts to combat sexual assault within its ranks, we reviewed the existing empirical literature on the characteristics and behaviors of adult perpetrators who commit sexual assault against other adults. Our search was not limited to studies of military populations. While a vast majority of the existing literature has focused on sole male perpetrators who assault female victims, we identified some research on other types of perpetrators, including female sexual assault perpetrators, men who perpetrate assault against other men, and perpetrators who participate in group sexual assault. This body of research indicates that adult perpetrators are diverse in terms of their demographics, background characteristics, and motivations. Moreover, research indicates that sexual assault perpetration is likely influenced by a combination of factors, including an individual's developmental and family history; his or her personality, including attitudes/cognitions; and environmental factors, including peer attitudes and alcohol consumption. The complexity of factors that influence sexual assault perpetration and the multiple pathways that lead to an attack make it difficult to predict whether an individual is prone to commit sexual assault. While predicting sexual assault perpetration is problematic, we identified a number of factors related to perpetration that may be relevant for intervention efforts and offer recommendations for the Air Force"--Publisher's web site.
