Book excerpt: French Fauvist painter Raoul Dufy (1877-1953), with his cheerful watercolors and oils depicting scenes of regattas and horse races, has largely been cast as a painter of luxury and leisure. This book moves away from the traditional interpretation of Dufy as a painter of pleasurable bourgeois pastimes. While not ignoring the undeniable hedonistic nature of his work, it sets out to show the gradual development of his personal style and his constant pursuit of new artistic expressions, highlighting the more introspective and reflective side of his oeuvre. Dufy was among the early 20th-century artists who did the most to combine the "greater" and "lesser" arts; like Gauguin before him, he made decoration the focus of his artistic concerns and succeeded in giving free rein to his decorative imagination.

Download or read book My Doctor, Wine written by Gaston Derys and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This delightful little volume, first published in French in 1936, extols the many joys and benefits of wine. Wine drinkers will take pleasure in Gaston Derys's quaint appreciation of the grape, and art lovers will admire Raoul Dufy's joyful watercolors. Reflecting the exuberance and elan of an earlier day, Derys takes us back to a time when the doctor's favored prescription was an amiable glass of wine. In Derys's ode to wine, here translated into English, we discover that the medicinal and therapeutic uses of wine are many: it assists in fighting typhoid, infant sicknesses, and diabetes; it exerts a positive effect on one's character, beauty, and creativity: and it lends a fortifying power to athletes and soldiers. Supported by the comments of French doctors as well as Dufy's beautifully reproduced paintings, Derys's argument to raise a glass of wine becomes pleasantly irrefutable.

Book Synopsis The School Prints by : Ruth Artmonsky
Download or read book The School Prints written by Ruth Artmonsky and published by Antique Collectors Club Dist. This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This beautifully produced book tells the story of The School Prints series. It was dreamt up towards the end of WW2, when Brenda Rawnsley and her husband Derek had the idea of bringing contemporary art to young children by putting 'good' art into schools. Initially British artists were commissioned to produce one lithograph each, John Nash, Paul Nash, Henry Moore, John Tunnard, Barbara Jones, L.S Lowry and many more. These were issued in a series of standard-sized prints to which schools could subscribe. A war widow at the age of 30, Brenda took up the project again immediately after the war and embarked on an even more ambitious project to sign up the great European artists of her day. She travelled extensively around France - not an easy task at the time - and signed up the likes of Picasso, Braque, Leger, Matisse and Dufy to contribute works 'pour les enfants anglais' as Picasso said. Tragically the project was not a commercial success, many of the schools finding the works too avant garde and modern. However The School Prints project should be seen in the context of attempts to democratise British art in the mid-20th Century, as well as part of the renaissance of lithography that was taking place at that time. This book and its companion Art For Everyone will appeal to anyone interested in Modern British Art and sit perfectly alongside several titles in the ACC Design series. AUTHOR: Ruth Artmonsky trained as a psychologist. On her retirement from her associate directorship of a leading psychometric consultancy she ran a small art gallery. Her particular interests are the 'jobbing' artist and the democratisation of art. She has written and published a number of books on British mid-20th century art. SELLING POINTS -Exquisitely designed and packaged -Perfect companion to many titles in the ACC Design series -Topical subject due to the current fascination with Modern British and Modern prints ILLUSTRATIONS 100 colour

Book excerpt: "As a sailor and a collector, Bill Koch has always been a maverick. Under his command, a campaign based on science surprised the world in 1992 by capturing the America's Cup. And as a highly personal collector, he has brought together a collection of masterworks that speak of his love of art and his love of the sea and all of its traditions, and his respect for and understanding of maritime tradition." "This collection, formed with the experienced knowledge of a sailor and the selective eye of a collector, is the mirror of a man who approaches art with both reverence and a clear sense of what he likes. It will provide weeks of pleasure to any serious antique collector, art lover, or blue-blooded sailor."--BOOK JACKET.
