Book excerpt: Randolph Caldecott is best known as the namesake of the award that honors picture book illustrations, and in this inventive biography, leading children's literature scholar Leonard Marcus examines the man behind the medal. In an era when the steam engine fueled an industrial revolution and train travel exploded people's experience of space and time, Caldecott was inspired by his surroundings to capture action, movement, and speed in a way that had never before been seen in children's picture books. Thoroughly researched and featuring extensive archival material and a treasure trove of previously unpublished drawings, including some from Caldecott's very last sketchbook, Leonard Marcus's luminous biography shows why Caldecott was indeed the father of the modern picture book and how his influence lives on in the books we love today.

This book was released on 2016-11-24 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, 'R. Caldecott's Picture Book No. 2', is a collection of the stories published as part of Caldecott 'Picture Books' series between 1880-1881. These were published in pairs, every year, from 1878 until his death in 1886. Stories compiled in this volume are Three Jovial Huntsmen, Sing a Song for Sixpence, The Queen of Hearts, and The Farmers Boy. Randolph Caldecott was one of the most important British illustrators of the Victorian period. He transformed the world of decorated children's books, with his delicate yet considered drawings and imaginative subject choices. Caldecott selected all the stories and rhymes he illustrated (and occasionally wrote) and frequently added his delightful style and humour to the stories himself. Pook Press celebrates the great 'Golden Age of Illustration' in children's classics and fairy tales - a period of unparalleled excellence in book illustration. We publish rare and vintage Golden Age illustrated books, in high-quality colour editions, so that the masterful artwork and story-telling can continue to delight both young and old.

Book excerpt: Differentiated book- It has a historical context with research of the time-The purpose of realizing this historical context is to approach the understanding of a historical epoch from the elements provided by the text. Hence the importance of placing the document in context. It is necessary to unravel what its author or authors have said, how it has been said, when, why and where, always relating it to its historical moment.Randolph Caldecott, March 22, 1846 - February 12, 1886, was an English artist and illustrator, born in Chester. The Caldecott Medal was named in his honor. He practiced his art mainly in book illustrations. His skills as an artist were quickly and generously recognized by the Royal Academy. Caldecott greatly influenced the illustration of children's books during the 19th century. Two books illustrated by him, valued at one shilling each, were published every Christmas for eight years.Caldecott also illustrated novels and tales of foreign travel, made humorous drawings depicting hunting and fashion life, drew cartoons and sketches of the Houses of Parliament inside and out, and exhibited oil and watercolor sculptures and paintings in the Royal Academy and galleries.Caldecott was born at 150 Bridge Street (now No. 16), Chester, where his father, John Caldecott, was an accountant, twice married to thirteen children.

Book excerpt: Lundin explores the contemporary response to the picture books of three pioneer Victorian illustrators of children's books: Walter Crane, Randolph Caldecott, and Kate Greenaway. Over a century after their first printing, the picture books are striking--breathtaking in their line, color, and design. The author frames "the horizons of expectation"--the context of assumptions and values--that shaped the way picture books were read and reviewed by their audience and examines their critical reception with a summary of their reputation over the last century. Finally, Lundin positions the three artists in relationship to each other and examines the historiography of the trio's canonization. The role of librarians, booksellers, and publishers was critical in making these names prominent through the twentieth century. The book illustrates that reputations are made, not born, and many cultural mediators are at work in the marketplace of children's literature.
