Book Synopsis Are we done yet? Response fatigue and rural livelihoods by : Ambler, Kate
Download or read book Are we done yet? Response fatigue and rural livelihoods written by Ambler, Kate and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2020-12-09 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accurate understanding of peoples’ livelihoods activities is needed to inform effective policy. Existing evidence relies heavily on studies that use designated respondents to provide information about their household members, imposing significant costs on these respondents along with possible distortions in the data. In rural Ghana, we randomize the order that household members are asked about and estimate that response fatigue leads to undercounting of labor activities by 8% on average. Women are twice as impacted as men while youth are four times as impacted as older adults, distorting both within-household and population wide comparisons. These biases result from women and youth being listed systematically later in rosters and stronger effects of fatigue for them, conditional on roster position. The implications of our results extend to other topics of enquiry as well, wherever similar repetitive survey structures are deployed, such as birth records, plot-level inputs, and household consumption and expenditures.
Book Synopsis Ideology and International Institutions by : Erik Voeten
Download or read book Ideology and International Institutions written by Erik Voeten and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-01-12 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new theoretical framework for understanding how social, economic, and political conflicts influence international institutions and their place in the global order Today’s liberal international institutional order is being challenged by the rising power of illiberal states and by domestic political changes inside liberal states. Against this backdrop, Ideology and International Institutions offers a broader understanding of international institutions by arguing that the politics of multilateralism has always been based on ideology and ideological divisions. Erik Voeten develops new theories and measures to make sense of past and current challenges to multilateral institutions. Voeten presents a straightforward theoretical framework that analyzes multilateral institutions as attempts by states to shift the policies of others toward their preferred ideological positions. He then measures how states have positioned themselves in global ideological conflicts during the past seventy-five years. Empirical chapters illustrate how ideological struggles shape the design of international institutions, membership in international institutions, and the critical role of multilateral institutions in militarized conflicts. Voeten also examines populism’s rise and other ideological threats to the liberal international order. Ideology and International Institutions explores the essential ways in which ideological contestation has influenced world politics.

Executives are routinely expected to negotiate — with vendors, customers and each other — with little training or experience. Companies rely on their people to negotiate multi-million dollar deals, but fail to provide even basic negotiation tools.Negotiate, Persuade and Create Great Deals brings together cutting-edge research on negotiation from neuroscience, evolutionary theory and behavioral psychology along with interviews and insights with 25 master negotiators in business, politics, sports and diplomacy. We provide tools and techniques that can help executives and business professionals improve their ability to negotiate deals, while also laying out a framework that can support companies that wish to improve their organizational negotiation capabilities. However, it is unequally distributed in Europe, contributing to marked spatial patterns of economic prosperity within and across countries. In many cases, these patterns have a long history. To understand them better, it requires to go back in time, when mass schooling was starting to become a reality across Europe. Taking a long-run perspective over more than 150 years, this book shows the development and the distribution of human capital in the regions of Europe and its connections with the economy. It provides insights into recent research findings in this area, including theoretical advances and the use of new empirical data.
