Book excerpt: Dorothy McManus grew up in a country home near the small town of El Centro, California. Named Rancho El Contento, this home was a peaceful, idyllic setting that created in her a refuge she would carry with her for the rest of her life. Early on, Dorothy began asking important questions: Why am I here? What is my purpose? She spent a lifetime seeking the elusive answers. As she traveled throughout the world experiencing diverse cultures and religions, these travels became a metaphor for her unrelenting mental and spiritual journey. Dorothy thought she had the perfect life. Married for 59 years, she had three sons and an admired place in the community. She was an accomplished businesswoman, artist, sculptor, and novelist. Everywhere she went people were captured by her warmth, enthusiasm, generosity, guilelessness, and love. But Dorothy's life was also marked by tragedy in the midst of joyous times beginning with the loss of her youngest son, Roger, while he was serving in the Peace Corps in the Philippines. Still, no matter what happened, she proved through her life that her Rancho El Contento way of looking at the world could triumph in the end.

Book excerpt: This book consists of a series of personal essays, which are in the form of letters from a grandfather to his grandchildren. These essays are, meant to tell about the author's life to three granddaughters, who were three-and-a-half years old, one-and-a-half years old, and newborn when this book was written. The first essay explains how the name "Bum Bum" in the title came about. Other essays talk about the author's childhood, schooling, work, travels, and his efforts to get to know his granddaughters. While these essays are written with a wider audience in mind, it is hoped that someday Isa, Lari, and Gia will read them and remember the special times they shared with Bum Bum long ago.

Book excerpt: "Life as a Dance" is the way I have seen my journey on earth. Through dancing I found the person I wanted to be-someone who was confident in his abilities and place in the world-and I was able to leave a restrictive self-image behind. I believe that everyone must develop unique talents and must step into the bright lights that are waiting to shine on all corners of life's stage and to illuminate each individual with a more ideal sense of who he or she is. By expressing one's talents, no one can fail to gain freedom from self-imposed limitations. My life has been one long adventure as a soldier, diplomatic courier, radio and newspaper reporter, businessman, and real estate investor. The career that gave me the most joy and fulfillment was my career as a parent. I still maintain a close relationship with my two sons. Throughout my life, there were partners I could dance with and partners I could not dance with. Sometimes the music was hard to follow, and I lost the beat. At other times, I heard the song clearly and, hopefully, was able to express some measure of harmony, rhythm, poise, and balance.
