Book excerpt: Socorro Alvarado doesn’t know it yet, but an unscrupulous county official has designs on her hundred-year-old house and the sacred Apache spring she has guarded all her life. Enter Kenny Lynch, a wounded Vietnam vet and his merry band of porch partiers. In the spirit of Edward Abbey’s Monkey Wrench Gang, the ragtag irregulars of 5th Street launch what is arguably the most original and unconventional fight against evil ever imagined. Set in a western town eighty years after the last gunfight, this tale examines the invisible ties that bind us, the families that we create through shared experiences and common goals. And it pays homage to the better angels in us all.

Download or read book Lands of Promise and Despair written by Rose Marie Beebe and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2015-08-28 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This copious collection of reminiscences, reports, letters, and documents allows readers to experience the vast and varied landscape of early California from the viewpoint of its inhabitants. What emerges is not the Spanish California depicted by casual visitors—a culture obsessed with finery, horses, and fandangos—but an ever-shifting world of aspiration and tragedy, pride and loss. Conflicts between missionaries and soldiers, Indians and settlers, friends and neighbors spill from these pages, bringing the ferment of daily life into sharp focus.

Book Synopsis Memoirs of My Life and Times by : John Charles Fremont
Download or read book Memoirs of My Life and Times written by John Charles Fremont and published by Cooper Square Press. This book was released on 2001-10-16 with total page 848 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During his remarkable life, John Charles Frémont served as a senator for the newly-formed state of California, led Union troops in the Civil War, and was governor of the territory of Arizona. His race for the presidency in 1856 brought prestige to the fledgling Republican Party, yet despite his popularity, his uncompromising determination to abolish slavery cost him the election. For all of his experiences in politics and the military, it was the earlier decades of Frémont's life that were the most exciting. Shortly after graduating from college, he joined a mapping expedition and surveyed the hills of South Carolina and Tennessee for the government. Eager to continue exploring, Frémont went on five more expeditions to America west of the Appalachians during the years from 1839 to 1846. He traveled up the Missouri river, crossed the Rocky Mountains, and reached the West Coast on several journeys, often with his friend Kit Carson, the legendary mountain man. In Memoirs of My Life, Frémont recounts those years in the wilderness, encountering the fabulous landscapes and native people of America's interior before the westward expansion of the U. S. His journeys across the unmapped prairies, mountains, and deserts offer a wonderful glimpse of North America's natural grandeur in its original state.

Book Synopsis Los Osos/Baywood Park by : Lynette Tornatzky
Download or read book Los Osos/Baywood Park written by Lynette Tornatzky and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2016 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Los Osos and Baywood Park, on the south end of Morro Bay, were two independent areas that developed separately during different periods. Over time, they grew together. In 1974, the US Post Office eliminated the Baywood branch and declared the area as Los Osos. Residents, passionate about their neighborhoods, specifically refer to Cuesta-by-the-Sea, Baywood, or the 12 other housing areas, while nonresidents ascribe to the Los Osos name. This area, including the beautiful Los Osos Valley, has been home to artisans, fishermen, and hunters for centuries, and more recently, cattle ranchers and farmers. The town grew haphazardly in fits and starts. Quirky, rebellious, off the beaten path--all apply. People here are happy to be a bit undiscovered and prefer that it stays that way.

Book Synopsis The History of Alta California by : Antonio Maria Osio
Download or read book The History of Alta California written by Antonio Maria Osio and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 1996-05-15 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Antonio María Osio’s La Historia de Alta California was the first written history of upper California during the era of Mexican rule, and this is its first complete English translation. A Mexican-Californian, government official, and the landowner of Angel Island and Point Reyes, Osio writes colorfully of life in old Monterey, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, and gives a first-hand account of the political intrigues of the 1830s that led to the appointment of Juan Bautista Alvarado as governor. Osio wrote his History in 1851, conveying with immediacy and detail the years of the U.S.-Mexican War of 1846–1848 and the social upheaval that followed. As he witnesses California’s territorial transition from Mexico to the United States, he recalls with pride the achievements of Mexican California in earlier decades and writes critically of the onset of U.S. influence and imperialism. Unable to endure life as foreigners in their home of twenty-seven years, Osio and his family left Alta California for Mexico in 1852. Osio’s account predates by a quarter century the better-known reminiscences of Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo and Juan Bautista Alvarado and the memoirs of Californios dictated to Hubert Howe Bancroft’s staff in the 1870s. Editors Rose Marie Beebe and Robert M. Senkewicz have provided an accurate, complete translation of Osio’s original manuscript, and their helpful introduction and notes offer further details of Osio’s life and of society in Alta California.
