Book Synopsis Faunal Heritage of Rajasthan, India by : B.K. Sharma
Download or read book Faunal Heritage of Rajasthan, India written by B.K. Sharma and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-10-14 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first ever monumental and scientific documentation of the faunal wealth of the Indian Desert state of Rajasthan. This volume, the second of two, provides a comprehensive picture of the conservation efforts undertaken to prevent further degradation of the condition of Rajasthan’s faunal wealth. A scholarly contribution to the field of knowledge, it provides novel and vital information on wildlife preservation initiatives in India’s largest state. Broadly falling under the Indo-Malaya Ecozone, the three major biomes of Rajasthan include deserts and xeric shrublands, tropical and subtropical dry broadleaf forests, and tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests. The corresponding ecoregions to the above biomes are, respectively, the Thar Desert and northwestern thorn scrub forests, the Khathiar-Gir dry deciduous forests, and the Upper Gangetic Plains moist deciduous forests. Contrary to popular belief, the well-known Thar or Great Indian Desert occupies only a part of the state. Rajasthan is diagonally divided by the Aravalli mountain ranges into arid and semi-arid regions. The latter have a spectacular variety of highly diversified and unique yet fragile ecosystems comprising lush green fields, marshes, grasslands, rocky patches and hilly terrains, dense forests, the southern plateau, fresh water wetlands, and salt lakes. Apart from the floral richness, there is faunal abundance from fishes to mammals. In this volume, the various flagship and threatened species are described in the 20 chapters penned by top notch wildlife experts and academics. The world famous heronry, tiger reserves, wildlife sanctuaries and some threat-ridden biodiversity-rich areas shall certainly draw the attention of readers from around the world.

Download or read book Conserving Sanctity of Nal Sarovar Bird Sanctuary ‘Ramsar Site’ by Community Participatory Approach written by Prof. Dr. Nirmal Kumar, J.I. and published by Google Book Publishers. This book was released on with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wetlands are amongst the World’s most productive ecosystems and provide a wide array of benefits. They also provide an ecological niche for the growth of rich flora and fauna, and enable the people to derive economic benefits. However, the growing population pressures, vastly changing social processes, and developmental activities have put a heavy toll on wetlands around the world. Especially, after the Ramsar Convention, need for sustainable management of these valuable ecosystems is strongly felt and many positive initiatives are taken during last decade. The Ministry of Environment and Forests & Climate Change (MoEFCC), Government of India have devoted considerable efforts to wetlands and their conservation since the setting up of a National Committee on Wetlands in 1983. The scheme on conservation and management of wetlands was started in 1986-1987 at national level with the objective of understanding a comprehensive study and maintenance of naturalness of important wetlands like Nal Sarovar Bird Sanctuary-The 1st Ramsar Site of Gujarat, India. Wetlands are highly dynamic systems, which continuously interact with other systems and anthropogenic activities in their catchments in various ways. All ecosystems interact with adjoining ecosystems in some manner, which are more varied and intense in case of natural wetlands like Nal Sarovar. Hydrology in this case refers to all water related features such as precipitation, inflow and outflow, evaporation and the resultant factors like depth and duration of water, frequency and duration of flooding, and the amplitude of water-level changes. Therefore, even small changes in the hydrological characteristics of the lake bring about significant changes in the community structure and function. It gives us an immense pleasure in presenting this comprehensive book on “Conserving Sanctity of Nal Sarovar Bird Sanctuary ‘Ramsar Site’ by Community Participatory Approach”. The Nal Sarovar, a shallow, permanent fresh water lake, that sprawl at the junction of mainland of Central Gujarat and Saurashtra, attracts one of the largest concentrations of migratory and resident waterfowl found in India. Although it is yet to be recognized internationally, the lake has been identified as priority site for intensive conservation and management of National Wetlands, Mangroves, and Coral Reefs Committee of the Ministry of Environment and Forests & Climate Change, Government of India. This book embodies an in-depth information on Nal Sarovar Bird Sanctuary in terms of point and non point sources of pollution, nutrient budget and recycling of nutrients in water and bottom sediments, planktons as indicators and markers of pollution, macrophytes as indicators of quality of wetlands, bioaccumulation of heavy metals in aquatic macrophytes, suitability of habitat for waterfowl conservation, impact of various anthropogenic pressures and conservation and site-specific management strategies for sustainable use of biotic resources with suitable recommendations and mitigating measures. We hope this book will be of great help to scientists, teachers, students, wetland conservationists, and managers in this field.
Book Synopsis Music and Musicians in Late Mughal India by : Katherine Butler Schofield
Download or read book Music and Musicians in Late Mughal India written by Katherine Butler Schofield and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-11-23 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on a vast, virtually unstudied archive of Indian writings alongside visual sources, this book presents the first history of music and musicians in late Mughal India c.1748–1858 and takes the lives of nine musicians as entry points into six prominent types of writing on music in Persian, Brajbhasha, Urdu and English, moving from Delhi to Lucknow, Hyderabad, Jaipur and among the British. It shows how a key Mughal cultural field responded to the political, economic and social upheaval of the transition to British rule, while addressing a central philosophical question: can we ever recapture the ephemeral experience of music once the performance is over? These rich, diverse sources shine new light on the wider historical processes of this pivotal transitional period, and provide a new history of music, musicians and their audiences during the precise period in which North Indian classical music coalesced in its modern form.
