Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rambles of an Australian Naturalist It is always difficult to write a preface; it is an art to write a good one. There are peculiar difficulties in scoring the overture to the present work, because it is only partially mine. I am at liberty to say that it was because Mr Ward did not feel sufficiently confident to write the book by himself that he sought my aid. I hope I have done justice to the mass of splendid material he has entrusted to me. I can truly say I have handled it with a loving care that has not been exceeded in the writing of any of my own books. Before I undertook the task of collating Mr Ward's notes, I stipulated that I should be permitted to treat the book as my own. I regard it as a foster-child, but as dear to me as any of my own literary offspring. Mr Ward is a Queensland stock-farmer, who, like myself, has amused himself in the intervals of a roughly laborious life with studying Nature in the wild, and prying into the wonders of her works. I am forbidden, by the position I have accepted, to say plainly what I think, or what I feel, of his ability as a field naturalist; but I must say that his splendid powers of observation demanded that I should exert myself to the utmost to deal worthily with the material placed at my disposal. My task has been to reduce the notes to readable form, collect the scattered information on specific subjects, and identify and supply the scientific names of species, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: 65,000 years ago, modern humans arrived in Australia, having navigated more than 100 km of sea crossing from southeast Asia. Since then, the large continental islands of Australia and New Guinea, together with smaller islands in between, have been connected by land bridges and severed again as sea levels fell and rose. Along with these fluctuations came changes in the terrestrial and marine environments of both land masses. The Oxford Handbook of the Archaeology of Indigenous Australia and New Guinea reviews and assembles the latest findings and ideas on the archaeology of the Australia-New Guinea region, the world's largest island-continent. In 42 new chapters written by 77 contributors, it presents and explores the archaeological evidence to weave stories of colonisation; megafaunal extinctions; Indigenous architecture; long-distance interactions, sometimes across the seas; eel-based aquaculture and the development of techniques for the mass-trapping of fish; occupation of the High Country, deserts, tropical swamplands and other, diverse land and waterscapes; and rock art and symbolic behaviour. Together with established researchers, a new generation of archaeologists present in this Handbook one, authoritative text where Australia-New Guinea archaeology now lies and where it is heading, promising to shape future directions for years to come.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the perceptions of European travelling writers about southern Western Australia between 1850 and 1914. Theirs was a narrow vision of space and people in the region, shaped by their individual personalities, their position in society, and the prevailing discourses and ideologies of the age. Christian, Enlightenment, and Romantic philosophies had a major influence on their responses to the land – its cultivation and conservation, and its aesthetic qualities – and on their views of both indigenous and settler colonial society – their class and assumptions of race and ethnicity. The travelling men and women perpetuated an idealised view of a colonised landscape, and a “pioneer” community that eliminated class struggle and inequality, even though an analysis of their observations suggests otherwise. Nevertheless, although limited, their narratives are invaluable as a reflection of opinions, attitudes and knowledge prevalent during an age of imperialism. Their perspectives reveal unique viewpoints that differ from those of immigrants who wrote about their hopes and fears in making a new life for themselves. These travellers were economically secure, literate and educated; foundations which provide an insight into the way power and privilege, implicit in their writings, governed the way they imagined Western Australia in the colonial and immediate post-federation period. The tinted lenses through which European travelling writers narrowly observed space and people, presented a mythical, imagined sense of southern Western Australia.

Book excerpt: For well over a century, the Night Parrot lured its seekers into Australia's vast, arid outback. From the beginning it was a mysterious bird. Fewer than 30 specimens were collected before it all but disappeared, offering only fleeting glimpses and the occasional mummified body as proof of its continued existence. Protected by spinifex and darkness, the parrot attained almost mythical status: a challenge to birdwatchers and an inspiration to poets, novelists and artists. Night Parrot documents the competitiveness and secrecy, the triumphs and adventures of the history of the bird and its followers, culminating in the recent discovery of live birds at a few widely scattered locations. It describes what we are now unravelling about the mysteries of its biology and ecology and what is still left to learn. Complemented by guest essays, illustrations and photographs from a wide variety of sources, this book sheds light on Australia's most elusive bird.
