This book was released on 2017-09-01 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes a series of contemporary techniques and their combinations used for CNTs solubilization, from physical to chemical and biological, applying inorganic and organic compounds, as well as some metal complexes. In some cases, successive steps can be applied, for instance the use of low and high-weight surfactants, or mineral acid treatment for creation of –OH and –COOH groups and their further interaction with organic molecules. Each discussed method leads to an improvement of CNT solubility, frequently a considerable one. The formed dispersions can be stable for long periods of time, from several weeks to some months, and they sometimes even remain stable after centrifugation. Several special studies have been carried out in the areas of influence of solvent and light on CNTs dispersibility, combinations and abilities of surfactants, CNT cytotoxicity, etc. Applications of solubilized CNTs are discussed in this book as well.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metallic carbon nanotubes are one dimensional conductors that are both technologically promising for electronic applications, and scientifically interesting for studying the physics of low dimensional materials. In this thesis, we present a detailed study of the inelastic light scattering (Raman) spectrum of individual metallic carbon nanotubes, with a focus on the influence of electronic excitations and charged carriers. We have demonstrated that the frequency and linewidth of certain phonon modes of metallic carbon nanotubes depend strongly the Fermi energy, because they couple strongly to low lying electron hole pairs. Next, we report the first experimental observation of electronic Raman scattering in carbon nanotubes. This observation demonstrates that the same electron-hole pairs that participate in damping the optical phonons of metallic carbon nanotubes, may themselves scatter light, thus giving rise to an electronic Raman spectrum. An analysis of the Fermi level and laser energy dependence of the electronic Raman and phonon Raman contributions allows us to explain the asymmetric lineshape of the G-band phonon modes in terms of a Fano interference. In another experiment, we have shown that the charge-induced expansion and contraction of the the graphitic C-C bond length is different for metallic and semiconducting nanotubes. Finally, we have measured the Stokes and antiStokes intensities of the Raman modes in electrically contacted metallic nanotubes in order to determine their phonon populations during high-field electrical transport. The experiments reported here, have helped to clarify the origin of several features in the Raman spectra of metallic carbon nanotubes that have been heavily debated in recent years. These result also shed light on the way electronic excitations and charged carriers affect the physical properties of metallic carbon nanotubes.

This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In situ Raman spectroscopy was used to explore etching of carbon nanotubes as well as their growth from C60. The thesis is in three parts: (1) C60 seed particles were partially oxidized in air and were used to grow carbon nanotubes and other nanocarbon structures. Seed oxidization was characterized by monitoring the evolution of the Raman Ag(2) peak and the D band, and oxidation temperature was found to be critical to nanotube growth. (2) To further explore oxidation, carbon nanotubes were thermally oxidized in air at different temperatures, while the evolution of different Raman bands was tracked. Etching dynamics and band intensity evolution were tracked in situ. Notably, metallic species were found to etch much more rapidly than semiconducting species of similar diameter. (3) To confirm and expand on this, a novel, simultaneous two-laser Raman spectroscopy setup was used to track the thermal oxidation of carbon nanotubes in O2 and CO2 gases at different temperatures. Metallic species were resonant with one laser line, while semiconducting species were resonant with the other, so changes to sample metallicity could be tracked unambiguously in two separate spectra. Again, metals were found to etch more rapidly. In situ Raman spectroscopy can track the evolution of nanotubes in real time and provide insight into processing. In general, detailed process monitoring like this can help in the development of selective synthesis and processing.

Book Synopsis Raman Spectroscopy of Double- and Triple-walled Carbon Nanotubes by : Jia Wern Hue
Download or read book Raman Spectroscopy of Double- and Triple-walled Carbon Nanotubes written by Jia Wern Hue and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) is a graphene sheet rolled up into a tube. Double-walled (DWNT) and triple-walled carbon nanotubes (TWNT) are two and three coaxial SWNTs respectively. Isolated species of DWNTs and TWNTs were only recently probed and it can be considered as a new branch in carbon nanotube science. Phonons, and the combination of phonons and overtones are fundamental to understanding optical processes, transport and thermoelectricity in carbon nanotubes. To study these phonons, resonance Raman spectroscopy is employed on DWNT and TWNT bundles, as well as isolated TWNTs. The phonon modes of interest to this dissertation are the radial breathing mode (RBM), the G-band, and the M-band. From the RBM, it is learnt that for inner tubes with a tube diameter less than 1.2 nm, the curvature effects are dominant. Evidence for intertube interactions was found, although for outer tubes the environmental effects dominate. There was also evidence for commensurate and incommensurate tubes. Studying the G-band allowed for possible chiral indices to be identified for the middle and outer tubes of isolated TWNTs. In addition, the frequency shifts of TWNT G-band frequencies relative to SWNT G-band frequencies were studied and compared to TWNT G-band frequency shifts. As for the M-bands, phonon mode assignments for peaks between 1680 cm-1 to 1850 cm-1 were attempted.

This book was released on 2013-08-31 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This chapter describes how the semiconducting-single-wall nanotube (SWNT) extraction affects their luminescence properties and how such properties can be exploited to fabricate optical sources emitting in near-infrared wavelengths ranging from 1 to 2μm. The main applications of carbon nanotube (CNT) lasers are aimed at optical interconnects and biophotonics. We review recent achievements in obtaining optical gain in thin films doped with CNTs. Techniques for determining optical gain in CNTs are considered with particular focus on the variable strip length (VSL) method and choices to integrate nanotubes in the optical waveguide are discussed.
Book Synopsis Raman Spectroscopy, Fullerenes and Nanotechnology by : Maher S. Amer
Download or read book Raman Spectroscopy, Fullerenes and Nanotechnology written by Maher S. Amer and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2010 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique book is the first treatment of nanotechnology as the science controlled by the behaviour of thermodynamic small systems. It provides comprehensive discussions on fullerenes as building blocks, Raman spectroscopy as a powerful diagnostic tool, and nanotechnology as the technology bridging the gap between human-made and biological materials systems. Aimed at graduate students, scientists, researchers, and educators interested in academia, government and industry, the text is divided into four chapters. The first covers the potential of nanotechnology to develop a better, deeper understanding of the physical and chemical phenomena observed in natural systems. It also contains a section introducing nanotechnology to the public in simple, non-scientific terms. The second chapter is devoted to Raman spectroscopy and could in itself serve as a basis for a short course on its applications in materials science. The third section covers fullerenes and presents their history and development as well as discussing the structure and production of zero-dimensional, one-dimensional, and two-dimensional fullerenes. The fourth and final chapter serves as a correlation discussion and over view. It emphasizes the unique nano-phenomena exhibited by the fullerene systems as carbon based nanostructured systems. This chapter, and therefore the book, concludes with a discussion on the potential of nano-science and technology to shape the future of human society.
Book Synopsis Investigation of Doping and Photoexcitation in Carbon Nanotubes Using Raman Spectroscopy by : Abdul Waheed Anwar
Download or read book Investigation of Doping and Photoexcitation in Carbon Nanotubes Using Raman Spectroscopy written by Abdul Waheed Anwar and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Raman spectroscopy is a non-invasive characterization technique suitable for the study of carbon nanotubes. Differences in the spectral shift of the Raman D and G bands are observed when heating carbon nanotubes through intense photon irradiation and by varying the temperature in a thermostat. These spectral changes in D mode are attributed to the variation of the electronic band structure by excitons creation. The investigation of the influence of doping and photoexcitation on the Raman G and D band of carbon nanotubes show that Raman spectroscopy can be used as a diagnostic tool. The spectral bands broaden and up shifts for nitrogen doped multi walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT). The up shift for sulphuric acid doped double wall carbon nanotubes (DWCNT) synthesized from catalytic chemical vapor deposition method (CCVD) is attributed to charge transfer and strain in the lattice. We have combined sulphuric acid doping and high pressure Raman spectroscopy to investigate the properties of DWCNT. The DWCNT doped with different concentrations of sulphuric acid are explored under high pressure suggesting an effect of the molecular ordering around carbon nanotubes at higher acid concentrations. Raman spectra of individual double wall carbon nanotubes on silica show a splitting of the G band due to contributions of the inner and outer tube when using a excitation energy in resonance with the inner metallic tube and outer semiconducting tube. The spectral line widths are comparable to what has been observed for individual single wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) or graphene. Increased laser power shifts the G band of the outer tube to higher energies and modifies its line shape.
