"The optimist fell ten stories And at each window bar He shouted to his friends. 'All right so far.'" Was he, as one is now and then inclined to think, a silly pated fool, or was there some basis for the feeling which inspired his utterance? In other words, are those to whom life seems so bright, buoyant, even and interesting, in distinction from those to whom it seems so dark and complex and uncertain, to be described by this same, or by some kindred term? BOOK TWO: Character-Building Thought Power This book is in part a newly added chapter to the fifteenth and succeeding thousands of the volume "What all the World's is Seeking." At the request of many who have asked that they might have it in separate from, the publishers take pleasure in presenting it also as a booklet, with some additional pages by the author. BOOK THREE: Every Living Creature 1. Heart Training Through the Animal World It is said that in Japan if one picks up a stone to throw at a dog, the dog will not run, as you will find he will in almost every case here, because there the dog has never had a stone thrown at him, and consequently he does not know what it means. This spirit of gentleness, kindliness, and care for the animal world is a characteristic of the Japanese people. It in turn manifests itself in all of their relations with their fellow men; and one of the results is that the amount of crime committed there each year in proportion to the population is but a very small fraction of that committed in the United States. Book Four: The Greatest Thing Ever Known The greatest thing ever known-What is it? Full surely the answer must be one that is absolutely universal, both in its nature and in the possibilities of its application. It must be one that can be accepted wholly and unreservedly, not only by a single individual, but even by bodies of individuals, be they the originators of any particular school of Ethics, the followers of any particular system of Philosophy, or even the adherents of any great system of Religion. It must be one so true in itself that it can be accepted by all men alike the world over. Book Five:The New Alinement of Life: The interest of thinking men and women the world over is being directed toward, is being focused upon, we might almost say, a very definite and a very significant field of thought. Life, life and the things that pertain most directly to it are, after all, they are finding, the things that really count. Book Six:In the Hollow of His Hand Men and women the world over, in these days of independent searching thought and of tremendous readjustments, are longing for the essentials of a religion that relates itself intimately and effectively to the problems and to the affairs of every day life. The desire in all human problems and relations to know that underneath are the Everlasting Arms, is well nigh universal. Book Seven: My Philosophy and my Religion Although I am using the word Philosophy according to the conception, or rather the definition, of Sir Wm. Hamilton-The study of effects by their causes-I am not aiming to present any "system" of philosophy as such; but rather to point out some facts of life that I have found true and valuable, that may be of help to others.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reader explores current interest in spirituality in the United States. It traces the concept and presence of spirituality in the nation's past and explains the strong attraction to spiritual themes in the present, with attention to questions of definition, historical usage, and connection to religion. Twenty-seven selections pursue the difference and diversity among Americans in terms of their spiritual styles, here understood as modes of experiential knowledge. Catherine L. Albanese has organized these selections to reflect four approaches to spirituality: knowing through the body, or ritual-based spiritualities; knowing through the heart, or evangelical and emotionally toned spiritualities; knowing through the will, or prophetic and social-action spiritualities; and knowing through the mind, or metaphysically oriented spiritualities. Taken together, these essays make the argument that the spiritual is human-made, essentially religious, and surely not the same at all American times and places. The anthology includes selections by Catherine L. Albanese, Janet and Robert Aldridge, Daniel Berrigan, Joseph Epes Brown, Charles W. Colson, Annie Dillard, Virgilio Elizondo, Tamar Frankiel, Emma Goldman, Charles E. Hambrick-Stowe, B. K. S. Iyengar, Curtis D. Burke Rochford, Jr., Jerry Rubin, Molly Rush, Starhawk, Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Trine, Joachim Wach, B. Alan Wallace, Steven Wilhelm, and Dhyani Ywahoo. Catherine L. Albanese is Professor of Religious Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara. She is the author of the widely used textbook America: Religions and Religion, now in its third edition, and of numerous other articles and books, including Nature Religion in America: From the Algonkian Indians to the New Age. Now in its second edition, including a new preface, Leigh Eric Schmidt's fascinating book provides a rich account of how this open-road spirituality developed in American culture in the first place as well as a sweeping survey of the liberal religious movements that touted it and ensured its continued vitality.
