Book excerpt: When Donna Snively Hulsey found out in July 1989 that shed be the first principal of a state-of-the-art elementary school, she teamed up with the community and got to work. It didnt matter that the school in Jacksonville, Florida, would not open until the fall of 1990: Before the first steel girder of Alimacani Elementary School was erected, the community began to spread a positive image of the school. Within seven years of opening, the school was recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School and a National Safe and Drug-Free School, and accordingly was honored twice by the president of the United States at the White House. Redbook magazine named Alimacani the top school in Florida for its uncompromising commitment to excellence in school and community partnerships. Three Alimacani teachers were individually tapped as Duval Teacher of the Year, Florida Physical Education Teacher of the Year, and Florida Media Specialist of the Year. Whether youre a parent, an educator wanting to fix problems at an existing school or establish a solid foundation at a new one, or a concerned citizen working on behalf of children, youll find a blueprint for educational success in Rally Round the Flagpole.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A timely reminder of how the past colours the future” Mary Cleeves Rally ’Round the Flag is a thrilling historical novel set during the American Civil war. The story begins in the mid-19th century in a large, Lancashire cotton mill, which never stops production for 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Here a family with rich and privileged men controls the lives of the desperately poor men, women and children who are forced to work for them...or be turned out onto the street with no income nor roof over their heads. In 1861 events move to the USA, where the first real battle of the Civil War started. The history of the (first) Battle of Bull Run is told realistically until, close to its end, it takes on an alternative life as a result of just one military action, which historically changes the remaining years of war. Senior General in the Confederate Army Robert E. Lee at that moment speaks of how he now sees war in this new version of victory: “Once you get 'em on the run don’t stop. Never give up the pursuit.” This fascinating account of the war, doomed to kill a quarter of the entire population of the USA, leads the reader through many of the major locations and actions of the war. The grim reality of the five years from 1861 describes both the true historical characters, as well as the three imagined young Englishmen whose lives now lie in the USA. Here they are destined to see, and even to experience at first-hand, the appalling bloodshed, death and destruction of a war so often fought at very close quarters. Here a brother could find his father or his son aiming a rifle at him across a battlefield; a general could be responsible for the death even of his grandson. The story roars faster and faster through the hell of shot and shell. Cannons, and shells from these cannons, and also from mortars, were designed to slice through great swathes of human flesh, while at close quarters Bowie knives appeared to rip out the throats of an enemy fighting for his own life within an arm’s reach. The bodies of the enemy lay scattered across innumerable battlefields and became food for the crows. An observer of a huge battle recorded in his diary that he had seen: “Entire regiments disappeared in a few minutes. Legs, arms, knapsacks and rifles thrust high into the air and then scattered on the bloody grass.” The reader may ask: “Can history be changed by the alteration of one small event?” But is there more than a little similarity in the 19th century between slavery in the USA and the penury, desperate hardship and death from disease walking the streets of Oldham, as well as the lack of any security existing for all those working in the mills, factories and mines of Great Britain? One part of the same American country wants to destroy the neighbour it has lived with peacefully for more than one hundred and fifty years. An extraordinary read awaits you...if you rally ’round the flag, but which flag do you choose?

Book excerpt: Leadbetter's book offers behind-the-scenes information in a, here-to-fore, unpublished history from the Office of Associate General Counsel for the University of Tennessee. All events discussed come from his personal knowledge and years of meticious notetaking covering a period from 1967 to the present. The book, over 600 pages in length, takes readers through the years of his life that Leadbetter lived to the fullest. Beginning with his role as a student leader of conservative orientation during the tumultuous years of the late 1960s and early '70s, the book moves to Leadbetter's surprising hire by the University as its first law clerk in the Office of General Counsel, only days after completion of litigation brought against the University by Leadbetter to obtain in-state classification.

As Gail began seeking Gods heart in prayer, He showed her how to pray effectively, using a clear method of searching Scripture for specific themes and verses and defining each term to determine Gods will in prayer. The result is a comprehensive, topical study of four hundred different prayer needs. As Gail submitted herself to Gods instruction, her horizons began to expand, and her relationship with God deepened. She learned to pray with power, trust, and joy. Prayer is every believers privilege as well as duty. Prayer makes joy possible under all circumstances as we make our requests known to God and listen to His still, quiet voice.

Book excerpt: Sarah Ruston grew up in a small town in the southeastern part of Michigan. The Ruston children know their place in society and their duty to the family and the community. The story follows Sarah’s life as she graduates from high school and goes to college in 1953. Her life does not adhere to the expectations of the era. Her life becomes “the road less traveled” by girls from small towns. Part I begins in the summer of 1953 when Sarah graduates from Sheldon High School. Shortly after graduation Sarah goes to camp as a counselor for the summer and leaves the sheltered life of the small town. She does, however, continue something of a relationship with one of her sometimes boyfriends. Part II opens as Sarah arrives on campus in the fall of 1953 and checks into two west of King Hall. Her life as a freshman means change. Her roommate, a wealthy industrial’s daughter, introduces Sarah to the core of the academic world: boys. Sarah hasn’t expected men to be such a large part of college life. It seems that some girls of that era came to college to get a guy. But Sarah likes the game and rises to the occasion and begins to look for romance in the academic world.
