Book excerpt: The volume deals with the inter-relations between agricultural production, agrarian trade, markets, towns and population of urban Rajasthan in the eighteenth-nineteenth centuries. This study also displays that how the higher receipts from sair-jihat (non-agrarian taxes) in various areas of Rajasthan, worked in the evolution of agrarian markets into qasbas. On the same line the volume shows the fall in industrial activity in the nineteenth century which broadly corresponds with the theory of de-industrialization and de-urbanization. Particular aspects of heritage are often more actively promoted, with others played down. The representation of heritage in tourism as static and timeless, derived since time immemorial from a distant past, is seductive. In Asia, a major part of the tourism market lies in the sale and consumption of highly orientalized images and versions of culture and history. In India’s marketing discourse, the state of Rajasthan symbolizes the nation in its heritage-laden, traditional and most authentic form. These images draw heavily on the British period in India - the Raj. In one sense, this vision of Rajasthan is ennobling, highlighting moments of cultural pride. In another sense, it demeans, by omitting and obscuring salient features of contemporary life. This fascinating book explores the cultural politics of tourism through interdisciplinary perspectives. Carol E. Henderson and Maxine Weisgrau demonstrate that tourism heritage privileges elite histories that recapitulate colonial relationships, compelling non-elites to collude in these narratives of subordination even as they advance their own alternative visions of history.

This book was released on 2024-06-30 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book attempts to trace ecological insights embedded in two major folk epics of Rajasthan – Epic of Pabuji and Epic of Devnarayan. The first chapter explores man’s relation with nature in past and attempts to locate the genesis of our attitudes towards nature in ancient myths as well as its portrayal in literature. It tries to define ecology and summarises the ideas about ecological literary criticism given by various critics. It highlights the tradition and types of oral epics in Rajasthan. The second chapter named “Cultural Ecology” focuses on the mutuality and interdependence of nature and culture. It reflects upon what effects human culture has on nature and vice versa in context of the epics of Pabuji and Devnarayan. The chapter focuses on literary ecology which explores the ecological dimensions of literary texts and also puts forth the artistic capability of the text as an agency of ecological awareness. The third chapter named “History, Aesthetics and Phad” explores how painters make phad and to what purpose these phads are made, what purposes of bhopas and commercial consumers it fulfils and in what ways bhopas inspire the process. It also discusses the history of visual narratives and locates the place of phad in it. It delves deep into the history of phad tradition of painting as well as its aesthetics. The discussion of aesthetics of phad foregrounds how phad helps bhopa in devising as well as improvising the narrative. The fourth chapter named “Performance and Ecology” focuses on how performances of folk epics of Pabuji and Devnarayan further an ecological vision in which natural surroundings play a contributory role in formation of meanings. An interconnection between the ecology of the region and the performance of phad has been evaluated which contributes in comprehending the full ecological implications of phad. An analysis of both the epics from an ecological literary perspective substantiates the excellence and contribution of the epics in enriching the literary genre with different aspects of ecological connections between man and other natural elements on earth. The book establishes that the literary ecology of phad is as diverse as an ecosystem. The ecology of phad thrives on cultural diversity, including people from all fields, such as phad painters, phad performers, and the audience/followers of the deities. This correlation is based not only on their economic relations or transactions, but they also depend upon each other for their exclusive identity.

Book excerpt: Extensive experimentation and high failure rates are a well-recognised downside to the drug discovery process, with the resultant high levels of inefficiency and waste producing a negative environmental impact. Sustainable and Green Approaches in Medicinal Chemistry, Second Edition reveals how medicinal chemistry can play a direct role in addressing this issue. After providing essential context to the growth of green chemistry in relation to drug discovery, the book goes on to identify a broad range of practical techniques and useful insights, revealing how medicinal chemistry techniques can be used to improve efficiency, mitigate failure and increase the environmental benignity of the entire drug discovery process. Drawing on the knowledge of a global team of experts, Sustainable and Green Approaches in Medicinal Chemistry 2e encourages the growth of green medicinal chemistry, and supports medicinal chemists, drug discovery researchers, pharmacologists and all those in related fields across both academia and industry in integrating these approaches into their own work. This first volume of the second edition covers synthesis methods following green chemistry principles, contributing to sustainability by saving energy, using lesser toxic reagents/solvents/catalysts and environmentally benign sources including plants and agricultural materials. - Highlights the need for the adoption of sustainable and green chemistry pathways in drug development - Reveals risk factors associated with the drug development process and the ways sustainable approaches can help address these factors - Identifies novel and cost effective green medicinal chemistry approaches for improved efficiency and sustainability
