Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Icelandic Sheepdog is a canine variety with Icelandic roots. Historically, Icelandic farmers have relied on this breed for its herding and working abilities to help them manage their sheep and other livestock. The Icelandic Sheepdog is a breed of dog that ranges in size from small to medium and has a friendly, alert temperament. Some distinguishing features of the Icelandic Sheepdog are as follows: - Their thick double coat and erect ears help them survive the cold and snow of Iceland. They also have a curled tail. - Males can reach a height of about 18 inches (45 cm) at the shoulder while females are slightly smaller. - Coat: Icelandic Sheepdogs have a double coat that is thick and weatherproof. This coat can be any color, but white is the most common. To keep their coat from matting and to ensure their comfort, regular grooming is required. - The temperament of an Icelandic Sheepdog is one of friendliness and extroversion. They get along well with kids and adults alike, and are smart and easy to train. They also have a reputation for being excellent herders. - High-energy dogs like these need physical and mental challenges on a regular basis in order to thrive. - Icelandic Sheepdogs, by definition as a herding breed, have an innate drive to herd and shepherd livestock. Many no longer engage in herding for a living, but they may still exhibit herding behaviors with other animals or even humans. - The Icelandic Sheepdog is one of the oldest dog breeds in Iceland and has a rich history there. Over a thousand years ago, when Vikings first settled in Iceland, they brought them with them. The Icelandic Sheepdog is a national treasure in Iceland, but its fame has spread far beyond the country's borders. Their endearing nature and useful skills have made them popular as both pets and working dogs in many parts of the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Icelandic Sheepdog is a breed of dog that is a member of the Spitz typing. The breed is also commonly known as the 'Icelandic Spitz' and the 'Friaar Dog.' The Icelandic Sheepdog very much resembles the bodies of dogs found in graves in Denmark and Sweden dating back to about 8000 B.C. It is therefore believed that the Icelandic Sheepdog is a descendant from Viking dog breeds. The Icelandic Sheepdog is commonly used to herd sheep and other cattle in the Icelandic countryside. When herding, the Icelandic Sheepdog was mainly used to prevent the cattle from straying away from the pack rather than driving the cattle. The Icelandic Sheepdog would tend to bark at animals that began to stray, this barking habit is still present within the Icelandic Sheepdog nature as they tend to bark when they want something. The Icelandic Sheepdog was also used to find and retrieve cattle that got lost in the countryside, which means that the breed is used to working alone and without the presence of humans. The breed was very popular up until the the 19th century where the plague and canine distemper destroyed over 75% of the breed! The breeds number continued to dwindle to the point where the Icelandic Dog Breeder Association (HRFI) was established to preserve the breed. The temperament of dogs is normally affected by the following factors: individual personality, heredity, training and socialization. It is therefore important to make sure that you meet the puppy's mother before purchasing a Icelandic Sheepdog. It is also important to make sure to thoroughly socialize your Icelandic Sheepdog with strangers, children and other animals during its puppyhood. Generally speaking, the Icelandic Sheepdog is an incredibly loyal, friendly and enthusiastic breed. They are also known to be incredibly inquisitive, trainable and intelligent due to their working history. It is important to note that as a working breed, the Icelandic Sheepdog has a high amount of energy which needs to be expended. If the Icelandic Sheepdog has a buildup of energy it is likely to develop destructive behaviors due to boredom or hyperactivity. Before purchasing any pet it is important to understand that as a pet owner you are responsible for the care and wellbeing of your pet. It is important to try and learn as much as you can about the animal you are considering to keep as a pet to make sure that your lifestyle, household and financial status are suited to provide your pet with the best possible care. This guide has been designed to provide you with both precise and concise information about a Icelandic Sheepdog's basic needs to help you provide your pet with the best quality care practices. This guide will give an in-depth explanation on training your Icelandic Sheepdog, raising your Icelandic Sheepdog from a puppy, grooming, health care and everything in between! "The Icelandic Sheepdog: A Complete and Comprehensive Owners Guide to: Buying, Owning, Health, Grooming, Training, Obedience, Understanding and Caring for Your Icelandic Sheepdog," by Michael Stonewood is the perfect purchase or gift for a first time Icelandic Sheepdog owner. This guide includes sections on caring for a puppy, breeding, health care, training, the basic cost of owning an Icelandic Sheepdog and much more. This book is the second edition - the first edition was published by 'Dog Care Professionals.'

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Homo sapiens sapiens met Canis lupus lupus millennia ago, the result was Canis lupus familiaris, the domestic dog. Since that fateful encounter, the dog has become, arguably, humankind’s greatest creation. The domestic dog is the most widely distributed species (other than ourselves) in the world, being found virtually wherever people live, and is also the most diversified of species, with literally hundreds of recognized breeds. While we have shaped the dog, it, too, has helped shape human history in innumerable ways. Our Debt to the Dog is a critical historical and cross-cultural examination, through the use of case studies, of this most improbable 15,000-year relationship and an exploration of how this relationship shaped the history of the world. It is also very much an apology to the dog because over the course of the partnership horrific acts were perpetrated against it intentionally and otherwise. Our Debt to the Dog enriches our understanding of the dog and extends our appreciation for the profound complexity of past and present human-canine relationships and the dog’s contributions to our lives and our world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Think Like A Sheepdog Trainer looks at the ancient art of sheepdog training through the lens of science-based learning theory and behavior analysis. It is designed to help you understand how and why a method works and to give you the tools for setting up and evaluating training plans and for approaching training problems in a logical, evidence-based manner. While there are good sheepdog training books available, almost all of them assume the reader has a basic knowledge of sheep and sheep behavior, the skill and experience to train a dog to do complex behaviors, the ability to figure out training steps on their own, and a clear mental picture of what a properly trained herding dog should look like. This book covers several topics that will help you become a more successful sheepdog trainer. Here’s what you can expect: 1. We discuss in detail how to train, manage and communicate with your dog before you take him to sheep. Without a proper relationship and training foundation, working stock with your dog is extremely difficult. 2. We introduce you to science-based learning theory and explain how it can be used to speed up and improve your ability to train your dog. We demonstrate how to evaluate and analyze training techniques so you can choose which ones work best for you and your dog. 3. We describe and discuss the physical and mental traits a sheepdog trainer must cultivate to succeed. People aren’t born as excellent trainers; training is a learned skill that must be practiced and refined. 4. We explain the behavior and handling of sheep. Understanding and knowing how to properly control sheep is essential to your journey in the world of sheepdog training. Many newcomers to herding have no previous experience with sheep. We provide some basic sheep handling exercises to improve your ability to control livestock. 5. We offer detailed lesson plans that break down training sessions into very small and clearly explained steps that a novice handler can apply on her own. This should help you with developing a daily lesson plan, a goal for that day’s lesson and a way to evaluate how you and your dog are progressing. You will discover that having a training plan and metrics to evaluate that plan will help you train faster and more efficiently. 6. Finally, we give you ways to think about training problems and how to approach and solve them in a logical, evidence-based manner. Because people have been training dogs and herding with dogs for many years, some of the methods described here are similar to those found in other books and from other sources. We have chosen training approaches that are widely used, least aversive and easily understood and implemented by an inexperienced trainer. You will find our sources in the resources and recommended reading section at the end of the book. Remember, sheepdog training is a lifelong journey. You will learn something new with every dog you train and with every competition that you enter. We hope this book will help make that journey a little easier. *This book focuses on training Border Collies for United States Border Collie Handlers Association(USBCHA) type trials, but the information is applicable to all herding breeds and herding venues.
